Jennifer Moehring is an interior design student who has completed several portfolio projects showcasing her skills. These include designing a Moroccan-inspired restaurant called The Painted Elephant, an office space for a graphics firm called Jump, and converting a historic schoolhouse into a residence. She also gained experience interning at Kohler where she assisted with product displays and trend research. Additionally, Moehring studied Chinese culture and painting techniques during a study abroad program in China.

Index
In this project, I learned how to develop a
thorough and complete concept, not simply
focusing on the interior. Not only did I design the
restaurant, but I planned the type of atmosphere
I wanted to evoke. The atmosphere included
the food that would be served, how it would be
served the entertainment, and
promotional materials.
Jump was the final project for the first semester
of commercial design. I learned and practiced
the codes and egress for public buildings, as well
as, effective and efficient space planning on a
unique floor plan, and completed a small
construction document set. I was able to
experiment with an open office concept and how
much color to use in the workplace.
The White School House is the final project of
my second semester as a design student and
proved to be the most challenging. I continued to
practice all of the residential codes and egress
requirements, learned how to use Photoshop,
InDesign, Revit, and I built on my skills in
AutoCAD. I figured out the rendering in
Photoshop is awesome for extra details, but for
entire black and white drawings is undesirable.

As an intern, I am learning the dynamics of a
design firm and how to design for one client
within a brand. I am learning the challenges and
factors that a set requires based on the views
and product that need to be photographed. I am
also learning how to creatively display product
in showrooms, a topic I did not get experience
with in class.
My elective classes in Chinese culture and
painting techniques exposed me to another
way of approaching the world. It interested me
in another creative outlet that does not involve
a computer, simply focusing and making each
stroke count.
I focused heavily on the effects of color and
light in the hand-focused classes. They taught
me how to think about the choices that needed
to made. How does a lamp impact the tile
backsplash or the plush wool carpet? What color
background will have the most impact, or will not
interfere with the rest of my work. Giving me a
break from the computer work and strengthing
hand-eye coordination.

12. The goal for the Jump office project
was to blend the influences of their
past with state-of-the-art
technology. Collaboration and
innovation are the focus of this
graphics and product design firm. To
enhance the work experience, a mix
of open office spaces with a variety
of workstations and multiple team
zones were utilized to satisfy diverse
work modes. In addition, the town
center is located at the heart of the
office for employees to grab a bite
to eat or hold a quick meeting. Bright
colors, retro style furniture, and
plentiful amounts of daylight allow
employees to have a cheerful and
productive work experience.

the perfect opportunity to
transform a historical public
building into a residence with
character. The small floor plate is
divided into a public and a private
zone with a utility core acting as a
noise buffer. The flowing
public areas simplify and
encourage entertaining. The entire
space was designed to be fully
accessible. The flowing public
zones will increase wheel chair
mobility.

20. As the 3D architectural intern, I was
able to assist the set designers with
numerous projects. I forecasted
and researched upcoming trends
for the 2016-2017 seasons. The
trend research provides useful
inspiration guides for Kohler sets,
graphics, and products. In addition,
I did preliminary designs for the
Kohler Design Center and various
tradeshows. All of these projects
gave me the experience of
designing within the brand and the
pursuit of gracious living.

27. The next grouping of projects focus on my
skills outside of technology. The first portion
includes hand renderings, where I used a
photo and a line drawing to practice
creating different textures and light sources
with markers and colored pencils. The
second portion inlcudes paintings from a
color theory art class. Each project
focused on a different property of color and
I was allowed to create anything I wanted
as long as, it followed the color principle.
The last few projects were examples of
projects from my earliest design classes
where we exprimented with design priciples
to complete compositions.

32. Feng Shui is not just a concept, it is a
lifestyle. Feng Shui can be
described as using the Earth’s wisdom
as guidelines for traditional Chinese
architecture, gardens, art, and culture. I
was extremely fortunate to have a
native Chinese professor willing to
share his years of expertise with me on
my month-long tour. Feng Shui
principles are opposite of our
traditional, fast-paced American lives.
There are three main guidelines that
are focused on in Feng Shui. The first
is appreciating that change is always
constant, the second is the
experience and not the end goal, and
lastly, balance.
STUDY ABROAD:

.I was able to experience all the
Feng Shui principles on our walks
through traditional Chinese
gardens and buildings around
Beijing and Shanghai. I got to learn
a few words in Chinese, taste
some unique dishes, sketch, and
climb the Great Wall. The perfect
combination of learning and
sightseeing on this on this once in
a lifetime opportunity.
