The Office Episode The Convict
The Office episode The Convict incorporates multiple concepts learned in social psychology
such as schemas and naive realism, stereotype threats and the perseverance effect. In this episode
specifically, the Scranton branch of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company absorbs new employees
from a Stanford branch that has closed down. The accounting department notices they have
received a check and aren t sure where it came from so they schedule a conference call with
Michael, who is the branch manager, and the corporate office. Corporate says, Yes, Michael, we
get that rebate because you hired an ex convict. Michael looks shocked and says, I didn t hire an
ex convict. When the group asks who it is, they are put on hold and begin to look around... Show

Ross, Lepper Hubbard performed an experiment designed to showcase the perseverance
phenomenon by having 60 high school females read suicide notes and judge whether they were
real or fictitious. Whether or not the girls would perform above average (24 out of 25 correct),
average (17 out of 25 correct) or below average (around 10 out of 25 correct) was decided by the
researchers prior to the actual experiment. When the girls were informed how they did, they
were then debriefed and told it actually had nothing to do with ability. The researchers
apologized but asked the women to fill out a survey rating how well they did compared to the
outcome the researcher assigned them to, how many answers they thought an average student
would get right on this and then how well they would do if they were given an equal task a
second time around. They found that the girls who were told they did exceptionally well still
rated themselves as capable of performing to those standards and their overall satisfaction was
higher on the questionnaire. Opposite of that, the women who were told they did poorly continued
to rate their abilities as poorer even after debriefing took place. Their assessment of performance or
ability on the self survey showed the perseverance effect taking place: though they were told they
were given false information, they still continued to behave in a manner parallel to that original
claim. This is seen when Michael becomes frustrated at numerous attempts from the office
employees and Martin to disprove his stereotype of prison and its inmates. Michael leaves the
conference room following his prison Mike skit and locks the door from the outside, shouting at
everyone in there, There! Now sit there and think about your freedom! Though he is told his idea
of what prison is like is inaccurate

Human Perception In The Things They Carried By Tim O Brien
Premised within an unbelievable scenario is the story of male soldier, Mark Fossie, in the
Vietnam War who brings his sweetheart, Mary Anne Belle, to his platoon. While Fossie wishes
to uphold the traditional gender dichotomy in a foreign land, he doesn t consider the effects of a
war on a sweetheart. When a person goes to war, [they] come over clean and [they] get dirty and
afterwards it s never the same (O Brien 81). In Tim O Brien s VietnamWar fiction, The Things They
Carried, he explores how humans comprehend the experiences of other humans. To convey his
understanding of the inner workings of human perception, he tells a story through Rat Kiley, who
had a reputation for exaggeration and overstatement. O Brien employs him to narrate... Show more

As an American woman entering a war zone, a male dominated space, she represents all those
girls back home [and] how clean and innocent they all are, how they ll never understand any of
this, not in a billion years (O Brien 80). The more time Mary Anne spends in a foreign
environment, the greater her curiosity about it grew. She soon fell into the habits of the bush.
No cosmetics, no fingernail filing. She stopped wearing jewelry, cut her hair short and wore it
in a green bandana (O Brien 70). Her clothing transitions from the typical American sweetheart to
that similar of a man. Mary Anne, however, was far more than a man She was part of the land.
She was wearing her culottes, her pink sweater, and a necklace of human tongues. She was
dangerous. She was ready for the kill (O Brien 82). O Brien juxtaposes the clothing that she wore
upon her arrival to the camp with her new piece of jewelry: a necklace of human tongues. She
becomes a symbol of the relatively extreme version of a woman when she is freed from the
grasps of sweetheart society. Visually flaunting her metaphorical willingness to be consumed by
Vietnam, Mary Anne assumes the role of Vietnam itself. Kathleen in How to Tell A True War
Story represents a stark contrast to Mary Anne Bell s war experience. She is a

Doroids Dream Of Electric Sheep Character Analysis
What is it really that makes us human? Our characteristics draw a fine line between us and
animals, or even artificial intelligence, but what is it that makes us so different, so superior ?
Philip K Dick s novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, shows the different stages of
morality tests that the main character, Rick Deckard, experiences, and how he grows as a character
to discover what being humanreally means. Simple things such as being a bounty hunter and killing
androids, the way society views people like JR Isidore, and electric animals all take a deeper look at
the term empathy and what it means to be human. The novel explores many different attributes as
to what sets humans apart, but the recurring theme of empathy shows that... Show more content on

He lives by himself in an abandoned apartment building and works a job that requires little skill.
Isidore has been dehumanized by society, being deprived of basic human qualities such as
individuality, compassion, or civility, much like the androids. But the one quality that Isidore
has an overflowing abundance of is empathy, but gets none in return. Unlike Phil Resch, there is
not one thing that he does not care for, living or not. But, people look down on this trait that
Isidore possess, they see it as a major disability not to be able to see the difference between man
and machine, but really it s a gift. Isidore has so much empathy and compassion he has no room
to discriminate. Soon someone moves into his apartment building. Her name is Pris Stratton,
and she happens to be an android seeking safety from the bounty hunters, and eventually her
acquaintances Roy and Irmgard Baty move in as well. Isidore, with his copious amount of
empathy, does not care whether or not they re androids, he s just glad to have companions, and
is more than willing to help protect them. But as time passes, we, as readers discover that these
androids live up to the expectations to, well, stereotypical androids. These androids that Isidore is
caring for only care for themselves, they care nothing for Isidore, especially Roy Baty. I vote we
kill Mr. Isidore and hide somewhere else (Dick 166).

Arbitrage Factor Costs
1. Define arbitrage factor costs Arbitrage factor costs are costs that an MNE suffers when the
company cannot resolve the issues without arbitration. These costs factors can injure a company in
various ways, from time and funds to the loss of competitive advantages. 2. Today s challenge is to
build transnational organizations that can sense an emerging consumer trend in one country, link it
to a new technology or capability it has in another, develop a creative new product or service in a
third, then diffuse that innovation rapidly around the world . With this in mind, identify a company

Zara, is using the best from both and using the knowledge to its advantage. Zara is being locally
responsive by making communication from customers all the way up to designers and
production managers as easy and quickly as possible. This allows for market needs and
opportunities to be identified quickly and produced centrally. By keeping information central
they use the knowledge of being locally responsive to develop ideas at the center and disperse
them as needed. 6. Define the center for global process. In the center for global process,
companies risk market sensitivity for efficiency; therefore, companies learned to develop three
capabilities for the central to global process to work: I.Incorporate Inputs of subsidiaries into
centralized activities a.In order for a global company to be more locally responsive, it must allow
for local managers of subsidiaries to have more input in central activities. II.Ensuring that all
functional tasks are linked to market needs a.Develop systems through which value adding
functions like marketing, R D, and production can be integrated with the different foreign
subsidiaries. This will allow for central activities to be regulated and directed towards market needs.
III.Integrating value chain functions by the transfer of responsibilities a.The transfer
responsibilities from one value adding function to the next will ensure that there is an integration of

Social Media And Its Effects On Our Lives
In my personal experience, social interaction online it helps me to keep in touch with families,
friends and also for networking, but in general my post is more likely about my family , Selfies or
just simple funny post that I may like. In particular, social media allows me to have easy
communication access with significant otherthat are out of the country.
Many of Us for the most part has been affected by social media in their daily person to person
interaction now days, the texting, email and media account like Facebook just to mention one of
them ,has been eliminating the phone calls, letter or even deeper, it is affecting our relationship
with our families and friends because is more distance .
Recently my family has an event to celebrate one of my uncle s birthdays, in New Jersey,
everything was really nice, a great moment for members of the family to interact because some of
us are living out of the state. During the celebration everyone was on their cell phones taking
pictures and posting on their social media account, including myself.
My family is really big therefore, that event will give us an amazing opportunity for some of us to
know each other, and introduced some new members to one another, such as newly marriages, but
instead we all were more focus on been on our phones posting on social media rather than enjoy
the celebration and make my uncle feel good and happy.

Examples Of Object Oriented Analysis Design
Object Oriented Analysis Design (OOAD) Object Oriental Analysis Design is a hands on
approach used to model and create systems as a group of interacting objects. The term Object ,
describes a form of entity or thing of concern. Objects are typically modeled after real world
entities or concepts. For the business analyst, examples of objects may range from; invoice,
product, contract, etc. Objects usually contain attributes that can be set to specific values. With
Object Oriented Approach to system design, it tries to lessen the impact of problems by
combining related data and functions into the same module. Objects In the real world can be
characterized by two things; data and behavior. For example, a television is an object and
possess data in the sense that it is tuned to a particular channel, the scan rate is set to a certain
value, the contrast and brightness is a particular value and so on. The television object can also do
things. The television can switch on and off, the channel can be changed, and so on. Below is a
graphical representation of a single object and its characteristics:... Show more content on

During the object oriented analysis (OOA) phase object modeling techniques are used to analyze
the functional requirements for a system and create models which reflect the logical design of the
system. During the object oriented design (OOD) phase of the system, models are elaborated upon
to include implementation specific details that show how the physical design of the system will
come together. OOA focuses on what the system does (its static structure and behavior), OOD on
how the system does it (its run time implementation).

Flappers Chapter 1 Analysis
1.) In paragraph 13, the writer says that the flapper was as standardized as a chain hotel ; by what
he means is that the flappers were similar almost the same to one another, much like a chain hotel.
He generalizes flappers to be all the same and compares the flapper s dress to be a national product
, as in something that was the same throughout the country. There is no distinction in the cut of
clothing between the rich flapperand the poor flapper national advertising has attended to that. The
rich flapper has better clothing than the poor one, but a block away they are all flappers. The
writer compares the sameness of the flapper s dress to the sameness of chain hotels. ...and

In the war, many young boys lost their lives; not long later after the war, a flu epidemic broke out
in the US killing millions of young men and women. After the tragedies, the youth began to
celebrate mortality, fun, money, and youth and the flappers did just that. Flappers were radical
women who didn t follow the conventional standards for women in the US in the 1920s and seeked
personal liberty. They rebelled against genderroles and did what was considered immoral for
women and norms for men; they drank alcohol, smoke cigarette, listened and danced to jazz
music, flirted, and drove a car. But most importantly, they made their own money. Though the
original idea of flappers were poor working girls who waited for someone to marry them, the
standard quickly changed. Flappers became women who wanted to make their own money and
didn t want to marry man to support them. Flappers appearance wise, iconically they had their hair
short to a bob, wore short dresses (an inch above the knee), wore makeup, and didn t wear corsets.

Why Don t We Complain
People love to complain. They love to share their opinions with the world especially if they are
negative. Most people, though, know that there is a time and a place to complain, that its
appropriateness and efficacy depend on the circumstances. William F. Buckley Jr., in his essay
Why Don t We Complain?, discusses what he perceives as a failure of people to recognize things
they can or should complain about, and tries to tie that deficit to the lack of participation in the
American political process.
He was not wrong about there being a lack of interest in politics. He fails, however, to establish a
correlation, much less causality, between the avoidance of complaining and political apathy. His
reasoning that our lack of complaining is solely based on anecdotes which seem to support his
view. Counter anecdotes would be very easy to find. These anecdotes also contain many
assumptions that he doesn t appear to have the basis for asserting.
Buckley tries to connect his brief anecdote about being uncomfortable on a train to a much bigger
political situation, flimsily. He writes of being on a crowded train car with many people, with a
temperature of 85 degrees, even though it was freezing outside. He reports, The conductor had
nonchalantly walked down the gauntlet of eighty sweating American freemen He doesn t use the
phrase American freemen accidentally. He may be trying to be slightly humorous, but he is also
trying to connect the small, even trivial, to the grander

For this we use the US traffic fatalities panel data for the 48 US states (excluding Alaska and
Hawaii) for 1982 through 1988. We observe our data in 7 time periods (1982,...,1988), so T=7, our
data are strongly balanced and the total number of observation equals 336 (=7*48). We calculate the
traffic fatality rate that equals the traffic deaths in the corresponding state in that year, per 10000
state residents.
Panel Data
A panel dataset contains observations on multiple entities, such as person, firms, state, or country,
where each entity is observed at two or more points in time. A panel data set on individual wages,
hours, education, and other factors is collected by randomly selecting people from a population at
a given point in time. Panel Data methods are more complicated than cross section data methods.
For example the standard error of panel data estimators needs to be adjusted because each
additional time period of data is not independent of previous periods. (very technical for a basic
panel data introduction)
Some basic considerations
(Maybe here we should use words like: furthermore, also, in addition or just an introduction
sentence. )
First, panel data are usually observed at regular time

Odysseus Leader Analysis
Odysseus is a good leader because he is courageous, intelligent and has a lot of self confidence. As
a courageous man, he has no fear and becomes the most powerful character. For intelligence, he
know when to be polite which makes him an intelligent guy. Also, his self confidence showed his
companions that he is a true leader among other heroic members that Odysseusworked with. To
start with, Odysseus is courageous leader who helps his companions get out of scariest and life
threatening situations. For example, in the Circe s island when Eurylokhos, shipmate of
Odysseus, warns him to leave other shipmates and run away from his island, Not back there, O
my lord! You even you cannot return, I know you cannot bring away our shipmates. (Book 10,
line 292), but Odysseus ignores him and goes into the Circe s house. Then, Odysseus directly
faces Circe, Without a word, I drew my sword and in one bound held it against her throat. (Book
10, line 361), with his threatening sword, and successes to make his shipmates to their original
human form. Also, when Cyclopes called, Polyphemus, caught Odysseus and his shipmates to eat

to this, now, the Seirenes will sing his mind away, ahead are beetling rocks... (Book 11, line 46),
and tried his best to make his crew survive. In addition, In Helios s Island, Odysseus warned his
crews not to eat the cattle, because if they eat these cattle, which belongs to Helios, he will get mad
and try to kill his crew. For evidence, No sooner had I caught sight of our black hull, grief took
hold of me... O cruel drowsing, in the evil hour! (Book 11, line 471) This clause shows how
Odysseus cared about his shipmates and felt a grief as a leader of this

Filial Piety In Confucianism In Ancient China
Filial Piety in Confucianism A famous Chinese saying asks, if one does not have piety towards
one s own parents, then how can one be loyal towards one s friends, country, or any other? In
ancient China Confucius taught filial piety as, the reverent respect of children toward their
parents. (Ebrey, Cambridge Illustrated History, p. 43) Confucius taught that duty to one s parents
is an integral part of society because it fit into the larger ethical system that he believed in. As the
saying says, how can one is not loyal to ones parents, how can they be loyal to anything else. Fillial
piety was important in Confucius time because he emphasized its utility in teaching people how to
act and behave towards other familymembers and society in general. (Filial Pietyin Confucian

Analysis Paralysis Essay
Analysis paralysis is a term most Executive Recruiters recognize. It strikes unsuspecting new and
seasoned recruiters alike. When one concentrates on the possibilities of what can go wrong during a
search, or worry about their performance, they tend to stop taking action. When activity stops
placements stop.
Action is the secret to keeping analysis paralysis from destroying a career. Focus on the end result.
A successful result is when a candidate is hired, starts their new job, and payment is received. God
bless fee payments! Engaging candidates and employers in conversation is the highest priority.
Delegate low end tasks to support staff. Initially most headhunters learn the intricacies of the
recruitment process by completing each step themselves.

Practice, practice, practice! Forget about mistakes because they re part of learning to be a great

Police Enforcement And Police Officers
It is widely known that police officers are given a substantial amount of latitude concerning
vehicular searches while on patrol. Many officers make it a habit to ask citizens they pull over if
it s okay to search their cars, while others will only ask if they have reason to believe that a suspect
is hiding something. Either way, what should you do if the policesearch your car without your
permission, and without first obtaining a search warrant? Most people know that police officers need
one of three things to search your car: permission, probable cause or a warrant. Unfortunately, an
officer will obtain one of those three things if he is determined to execute a search, even if there
is a possibility that it will later be thrown out in court. If permission is denied and they don t have
sufficient evidence for a warrant, just about anything can be used for probable cause. For example,
let s say that you re pulled over for speeding, and when the police officertakes your license and
registration, he notices that your eyes are red. This is a common side effect of marijuana use
(and about a thousand other things), but he might decide that he wants to search your car, so he
asks permission. If you don t give it, but there is a large jacket tossed over the passenger seat of
the car, he can use that jacket and your red eyes to generate probable cause. After all, you might be
concealing an ounce of marijuana underneath the jacket, and he would have to search your car if he

The Conflict Between Judaism And The Hellenistic And Roman...
As dissimilar as they were, the encounter between Judaism and the Hellenistic and Roman worlds
with the latter taking on much of what the Greeks stood for should not be considered as a clash
between civilizations. Doing so, I believe, would render a complex society and a dynamic process
into an absolute and a static one. The postexilic period had obviously brought Jews into contact and
in activity with the surrounding non Jewish communities in which they now lived; however, this
social and commercial interaction with the non Jews was enhanced, like never before, with the
emergence of the Greco Roman eras. The Jews often managed to retain control over their own
internal affairs and found favor before various rulers, but pagan ritual, idolatry, and Greco Roman
philosophies became almost impossible to avoid.
These new realities posed a serious challenge to Judaism and Alexander the Great s idea of uniting
the world by pushing for a common language and culture, Homonoia, only served to accelerate and
intensify this challenge. Yet, the very nature of this Hellenic culture would, itself, allow the Judean
society to establish various paths of accommodation to the conquerors. Thus, in reality, Hellenism
was but a framework that enabled Judaism to flourish within a new setting without compromising
its indigenous and unique character. The translation of the Scriptures into Greek, precisely because
the Hellenized Jews were unable to read it in Hebrew, is an example of

The British Government And The European Union
The British government is the process of negotiating reforms before it holds a referendum about
whether Britain should remain a member of the European Union or withdraw. While reforms are
demanded publicly in four areas, there are issues behind those demands that are seldom pronounced
openly.
The demand for change in economic governance, competitiveness, immigration and sovereignty
have been already put in the public domain. In economic governmance, London does not want to
concede more powers to Brussels, to join the euro and to be part of the ever closer union in Europe.
Britain believes that excessive regulation by Brussels has reduced European, particularly British
competitiveness. Therefore it would like to see the European Union s power to regulate diminished.
It also wants to exercise greater control over its border and impose certain restrictions on the
welfare payment to new migrants in Britain from Europen Union members. And it wants to return
some of the powers to the British parliament that were conceded to the union.
The British cabinet, businesses, and people are divided on the issue. The division in the cabinet is
so deep that Prime Minister Cameron, who supports remaining in a reformed EU, has allowed his
ministers to choose their side without the fear of losing their jobs. For instance, the foreign
secretary support Cameron s position while the defence secretary doe not.
Although most businesses seem to support staying in the European Union, a minority

Mary Shelly s Frankenstein And The Hidden Self
Knowledge is a distinct gift that is gained through the power of learning from mistakes, progress,

and learn about new things each and every day. Without knowledge, people feel empty, and they
feel that way because they feel useless, and they feel useless because they don t know what to do,
and this is what leads me to believe that texts like Mary Shelly s Frankensteinor Pauline Hopkins of

knowledge because these text s reveal in many cases why it is extremely important to obtain

This shows how in Frankenstein a male monster can come to learn things in a much more natural
way, and that he isn t required to be taught like a normal human being would. Moreover, it is also
very important to point out that even though no female monster was created in the end, she would
have been capable of learning everything like the male monster, because in the end knowledge is
just a form of dedication.
To further extend on the book Frankenstein, Shelley it states, My days were spent in close
attention, that I might master the language (128). Further concluding my idea that the monster
wants to learn and by learning or gaining knowledge the monster is becoming more aware of the
roles that his own gender play, thus leading us to later on read that he is demanding a wife to
fulfill his roles in the world just like every other average male would do with a wife. Another
great example can be when Frankenstein was requesting a female companion. In the book it

excuses prettied up (Roth 39). Roth is a professor at Standford so what he says has to be correct
right? Maybe not in all situations. Some reasons are valid, but many others are lacking. A quick

Problems Associated With Hepatitis C
Introduction:
Indigenous peoples in Canada (First Nations, Inuit and MГ©tis) are recognized as having a
significantly increased hepatitis C disease burden in comparison to non Indigenous Canadians
(Uhanova, Tate, Tataryn, Minuk, 2013). Due to over representation in many groups considered high
risk for hepatitis C transmission, such as those living in unstable housing or engaging in injection
drug use, Indigenous peoples living in urban settings are particularly affected (Miller et al., 2010).
Recent studies have shown that comprehensive research on the risk factors associated with hepatitis
C acquisition in urban Indigenous populations is lacking (Uhanova et al., 2013; Plitt et al., 2011).
Furthermore, available evidence suggests that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

To meet these objectives, peer reviewed databases were searched using the SFU Library Fast

Nations OR MГ©tis OR Inuit ) AND ( hepatitis C ) AND ( urban ) AND ( risk factor ). After the
initial serch, all articles published prior to 2008 were excluded, yielding 1,890 results. Upon
reviewing the most relevant abstracts, five articles were deemed to be the most focused on hepatitis
C risk factors in urban Indigenous populations and included in this review.
This review will draw out and summarize key themes and findings from those five studies. Next,
potential gaps in the research related to hepatitis C risk factors for this population will be
examined. It will will then conclude with a brief discussion of future directions for research, as
well as the implications of these risk factors on hepatitis C policy and interventions for urban
Indigenous populations.

Tornado Wind Poem
Furthermore, in the fourth portion of the poem shows the speakers obligations to maintain her
freedom. In stanza four the speaker then states, I am a tornado child born in the whirl of clouds;
the center crumbled then I came. My lovers know the blast of my chaotic, giving that they
tremble at the whip of my supple thighs; you cross me at your peril, I swallow light when the
warmth of anger lashes me into a spin, the pine trees bend to me swept in my gyrations... (Lines

Rosalie Richardson. The speaker explains how to maintain a sense of freedom through
sexuality, which was one of the ways that black southerners maintained their freedom. The last
lines of the poem which is in stanza five states, I am a tornado child. When the spirit takes my
head, I hurtle into the vacuum of white sheets billowing and paint a swirl of color, treaked with
my many songs (23 26). According to the text, stanza five just outlines the seemingly
purposeless nature of Rosalie s life. The speaker becomes creative by adding the use of colors to
describe the tone and Rosalie s feeling throughout the poem. The speaker uses white to describe
Rosalie life as a blank canvas and the swirl of color shows how she is open to various cultures,
which are greatly influenced by Dawes because he is exposed to numerous cultures. While
freedom is manifested in Dawes s poem, hopelessness is shown in Brooks poem. Therefore, in
Brooks poem We Real Cool, wickedness is defined through hopelessness. Throughout the poem
darkness manifests itself as the narrator discusses a group of teenagers that s all about living wild
and dying young because of hopelessness. The narrator starts off by displaying that they seem like
they are content with the alternative lifestyle that they outline throughout the poem, but that defiant
mood abruptly ends at the last line, when their demise seems to be an effect of all the
responsibility they had been putting off over the years. The poem describes the men s fears, their
motivations, and who they think they are, as opposed to who they really are. The first part of the
poem begins with, We real cool. We Left school (Lines

ROTC
Siege of Yorktown The Revolutionary War was a dreadful war leaving almost 70,000 U.S. and
British soldiers dead or wounded. The war lasted eight years with America, France, Spain, and the
Dutch on one side and Great Britain on the other. On October 19, 1781 the last major land battle
took place, the Battle of Yorktown. Similar to other battles in the Revolutionary War, the Americans
were fighting for independence from the British and as threats from them kept increasing, the
situation did not get any better. George Washingtonis recognized to having inspired the victory

Leading up the battle of Yorktown, in February, 1781, Major General Marquis de Lafayette was
ordered to take his Continental troops to Virginia. About a month later General Cornwallis and
his army had entered Virginia believing that if the American forces had resistance, he would
have victory against the Americans and the French. Later that year in August on 1 2, 1781
Cornwallis and his army set up at Gloucester point, hoping to use it as a base for supply and
weapons. Couple of weeks later, Washington heard about the base and sent a large army to
destroy Cornwallis base. A month later on September 14, 1781, French General Rochambeau and
General Washington arrived, and sent 400 French soldiers and 400 American soldiers to storm the
British redoubt. On October 19, 1781, being taken under heavy from the Americans and the
French, Major General Cornwallis realized that he was short of troops and decided to escape
Yorktown before surrendering. Making the move to escape, a sudden storm from the Americans

Dante s Journey Of Salvation
As Dante makes his ascent through hell and purgatory, he is guided by two figures. The first is
Virgil, who saves him from peril and accompanies him, as a friend, through the layers of both
afterlifes. The second is Beatrice, who inspired Dante s journey of salvation in the first place, and
who he longs to be reunited with. Yet although these guides are leading him towards God, Dante
mistakes their guiding as the end itself. He makes a God of Beatrice, sees her as the ultimate good
towards which one strives, and makes a Jesusof Virgil, the man through whom this ultimate good is
reached. In this way, Dante creates his own trinity, much to the detriment of his ascent to the True
God.
His first mistake, through which the others stem, is equating Beatrice to God. While she was alive,
her beautiful eyes and lovely limbs were the only things keeping him on the holy path. This is clear
when he confesses Things set in front of me, / with their false delights, turned back my steps / the
moment that Your countenance was hidden (Purgatorio.31.34 36). He could have avoided traveling
through the afterlifes had he not overvalued her in the first place. In fact, even when he is
promised redemption through his journey, it takes Virgil mentioning Beatrice as the end goal of
his journey to persuade Dante to begin the undertaking (Inferno.2.57 126). Dante still sees
Beatrice, rather than God, as the end towards which he strives. For her sake alone he goes down
into the deepest pits of

Cluniac Monasticism Essay
Cluniac Monasticism
Assess the strengths and weaknesses of Cluniac monasticism between the tenth and twelfth
centuries.
The nature of Cluny lay in the circumstances of it s foundation. It was endowed with a measure of
independence by it s founder, Duke William, allowing the monks to elect their own abbot, placing
the abbey directly under the guardianship of St Peter and the Apostolic See. As a house dedicated to
reviving strict Benedictine observance Cluny was not unique, but it was this indepencence, the

the abbey s later greatness.

Charity and almsgiving also formed a regular part of life at Cluny, which again showed the holiness
and faithful observence of the monks.
It was a combination of the personal authority of the abbots, the benedictine observence of the
Cluniacs and the repute and public esteem in which the order was held that resulted in the
expansion of the Order. The success of the order in it s resoration of benedictine observence
attracted invitations by lay magnates for the Cluniacs to reform their monastries, and gifts of
houses, some new foundations, some old abbeys. Such reform was not always welcomed by the
monks of the profered houses, such as the monks of Fleury. Papal paronage, and the will of lay
benefactors meant that from the time of Odilo these reformed houses became dependecies of
Cluny. This was not always put into effect immediately, and the tightness of the bond varied from
house to house. It was the independence granted in the founding charter that allowed the Order to
expand this way, and develop independently. Not only was Cluny free from control of any local
magnate or bishop, it was also trusted by all due to this autonomy.
Cluny attracted gifts from all levels of society and of all sorts, from monstries, churches and lands,
to child oblates, gifts of money large and small and goods. It also attracted many

The Plague of Athens Essay
The plague of Athens
The Athenian plague was an epidemic that began in the summer of 430 B.C. in Athens a year
after the Peloponnesian war in 431 B.C. It was supposed that the plague was a result of excess
number of Athenians within the city walls also known as the long walls a military strategy by
Pericles which consisted of building walls that connected the city to its port . The surplus of
Athenians led to a shortage of food, water, an absence of sewage systems, and other important
factors were said to have brought about the plague. It first appeared in the south of Egypt, Ethiopia,
Libya, and later on in the Persian Empire, and Rome before arriving in Athens . The disease

It left the population time to live in crime as they awaited death. The once valued Athenian
morals also ceased to existed in that period. The population did not bother to accomplish any of
the morally accepted laws. Meaning that since no one would ever be there to acknowledge it or
they could ever gain benefits for it, it was normal for some not to complete any. For them, it was
considered a waste of time to be morally just because they all would perish. The epidemic left the
Athenians incapable of caring for their families who were infected. In Thucydides eyes, the most
immoral act of all was the fact that they were left to die by loved ones. The plague was highly
contagious; the infected showed signs of ineffectual retching followed, producing violent spasms,
[...]externally the body was not very hot to the touch, nor pale in its appearance, but reddish, livid,
and [breaking] out into small pustules and ulcers. But internally it burned so that the patient could
not bear to have on him clothing [...] . Due to their symptoms, family members forgot all about
their traditionnal obligations and abandoned their families and friends. They basically abandoned
all of there loved ones since they were potential threats to their lives. Hence, they could only
survive if they had no contact with their loved ones or friends. The dead and infected were therefore
voluntarily neglected by their families. Consequently, the bodies

In Favor of Gun Ownership in the US
The ownership of a firearm should not be illegal when most gun owners are law abiding citizens
who use guns in a responsible manner. Our country s founding fathers ratified the second
amendment as a part of our Constitution in order to protect citizen s right to bear arms and to be
prepared for foreign invasion. However, currently the views on gun ownership are beginning to
differ even more in urban and rural communities across America because of how each society is
individually affected by the use of firearms. Many Americans who rely on concealed weapons are
women and even families while some Americans are not yet permitted to keep a firearmlike school
staff and store owners. Also many sheriffs across the United States oppose gun... Show more content

The Legal Action Project determined that the main purpose of writing the Second Amendment
was to make sure that the federal government would not be able to disarm the militia. Also during
the late eighteenth century colonists and even the Founding Fathers wanted reassurance that in
case of a standing army there would be a militia ready for a counterattack. The author, James
Madison, obviously guarantees that the right to bear arms is a collective right of all the people
not just the government s army (Dolan Jr. 71). However many argue that the second amendment
only refers to our country s organized army, not the whole population. Their reason for this is that
no country should put their lives in the hands of mere civilians. Alexander Hamilton specifies that
there are actually two militias; the first is organized, while the second consists of the rest of the
people (Dolan Jr. 47). There is no surprise when people hear about how the gun control is openly
despised in rural communities. Areas centered on agriculture and or the great outdoors are focal
points of recreational firearms use, whether it is for hunting or just target practice. Often children

Bryan Minkyu Martin was born in Seoul, Korea in 1988. Peter and Barbara Martin, a

Development Of The Residential School System
I just don t like to talk about it or even think about it. Sometimes when I am by myself, doing
beadwork or something. I stop all the sudden and tears just start coming down
: A quote from Aggie George recalling of her experience in the Lejac Indian Residential School
(Legacy of Hope Foundation, 2001). In the 1880s all the way to the 1990 s roughly 150,000
aboriginal children where removed from their communities and homes to attend the residential
school system set up by the government and operated by the Christian churches (Government of
Canada, 2015). The purpose of these residential schools was to isolate Aboriginal children from
their families and assimilate them into the dominant culture (First Nations Study Program, 2009).
As the history of the residential school system unfolds it becomes evident that the Canadian
Government attempted to eradicate the Aboriginals culture and lifestyle. The residential school
system was a devastating crime against Aboriginal cultures and has had lasting and debilitating
effects on their populations.
The residential schools were a wide spread school system that was established by the Canadian
government and organized by the Christian churches (Government of Canada, 2015). The goal of
these schools was to educate Aboriginal children in Christianity and to adapt them into mainstream
society. The children in these schools were forced to abandon their heritage, and were separated

Seamus Heaney s Peninsula Essay
Seamus Heaney is a famous Irish poet who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1995
and is considered by many to be the most interesting Irish poet since William Yeats, who likewise
won a Noble Prize in his day. Heaney s literature frequently communicates the rather tranquil
setting of his home land, Ireland, and in particular the North of the country, where he was born.
(BBC News Magazine Faces of the week , 19 January 2007) His unique portrayal of Ireland s
countryside lead to his Noble Prize and the Swedish Academy mounting praise on him for works
of lyrical beauty and ethical depth (New York Times, October 6 1995, by William Grimes). His
love for the Irish landscape is clearly evident to the reader in many of his poems.... Show more

It suggests to the reader that all the information that has been taken in, all this scenery at the
peninsula, is just an image in the mind and only in an inspired and skilled wordsmith can the
written word on page come close to realising the true beauty of these spectacular sights. Heaney
describes this peninsula as a land without marks , which really represents Ireland as a whole,
with its proud ancestry and peaceful countryside, with endless silent fields. This reinforces
Heaney s idea of uncoding the scene. This land without marks is a silent landscape, which sits
dormant, waits to be seen and heard and one must have the skill to read what one sees and hears
and form that into words on paper. Also the fact that in this land with no marks one can only
merely pass through and not arrive conveys the land s starvation of its ancestors imprints and
creations, so much so that it is difficult to recognise one part from another. One could conclude
that it is not just the narrator that is struggling to express himself, but that the landscape itself is
also inarticulate. The sky is tall as over a runway, Heaney s description of the sky here is
appropriate. He uses a simile, comparing the sky on the peninsula to that over a runway. The sky,
like that over a runway, is vast as there is nothing really in the way,

Analysis Of Compensation Equity Is Very Popular Right Now
The topic of compensation equity is very popular right now. Concerns about gender pay gap,
CEO pay ratio, and pay satisfaction as it relates to employee performance are especially prevalent.
For this discussion we will focus on the ethical implications of CEO pay ratio but in order to do
this we must first define compensation.
Often CEO compensation is comprised of cash salary, bonuses, stocks, options, etc. It is not unusual
for companies to have requirements about the percentage of the CEO total compensation that must
be held in stocks in an attempt to incentivize good performance. The required company investment
may have other limitations such as restrictions on when stocks can be purchased and sold (Core
and Guay 2010). This is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If all employees earned satisfactory wages, the pay ratio would decrease.
According to Henderson and Fredrickson (2001), it is necessary to distinguish between economic
views and behavioral views that embody various pay gap theories. Economic perspectives
emphasize competition while behavioral perspectives emphasize cooperation (p. 97). Relative
deprivation theory states that when lower level employees feel like they are receiving less than
they deserve, it can lead to adverse behavior (p. 97). Tournament theory proposes that CEO pay
gap promotes competition and the gap between successive ranks increases with hierarchical level
(p. 99). This theory relies on strong incentives to justify pay gap and encourage positive behavior
from employees, however, this approach favors the individual so for organizations that require
coordination and cooperation, this can elicit self serving behavior. When collaboration is vital to an
organization, the allocation preference theory proposes that pay is distributed relatively equally to
maintain social harmony and discourage destructive employee behavior (p. 98). Another key
consideration is how dominant cultural values impact organizational structure. According to Tosi
and Greckhamer (2004) national cultures emerge from a broad set of forces which results in a
dominant cultural value set and is

desire to be an individual is neglected. In Halsey s song Gasoline, she comments on the way in
which people mimic those around them and deny their uniqueness. Throughout the song, Halsey
describes society as a machine. She claims that through her own experiences, she has gained
insight into the depressing world of being in the limelight. As a celebrity, she is continually
pressured to cover up her differences, but she resists the voices that tell her to adhere to normality.
Instead of becoming a puppet that is easily controlled, she embraces her divergence. Halsey uses
the song to criticize society for shunning those that do not conform to social... Show more content

She defines herself when she call[s] [herself] a fucking hurricane. This metaphor is comparing
her to the uncontrollable natural disaster that is a hurricane. By embracing her identity as a
hurricane, she catches the attention of the elite and forces them think about what makes them
unique. Also, she enacts change into their thoughts because she is successful without having to
conform, helping them understand that they no longer have to [live] on a screen. Although
Halsey uses the phrase on a screen, she is discussing celebrities and pointing out that when they
have their face[s] all made up, living on a screen, they are actually hiding behind a screen. They
use the screen to paint their lives as perfect, but in reality, they are flawed and face struggles like
all other citizens. Halsey continues drawing on her experiences by stating, I think there s a flaw in
my code. Her use of the word code refers to everyone being a robot in society s machine. However,
because her code is flawed, she is able to flourish as an individual. Her flawed code also references
her bipolar disorder, but she goes on to explain that [her] heart is golden. These descriptions of
herself illustrate that although she has faced bipolar disorder, an illness society labels as strange,
she still wants people to

Quotes About Joe Louis
Joe Louis was a Black American professional boxer who helped bring together White and Black
Americans during the Great Depression. White and Black Americans were segregated during that
time which resulted in hostility and hatred toward the other race. Rumours would be made about
the other race and a racecould be thought of as superior to another. Joe Louis gained respect by
many of different races for winning the heavyweight world championship in 1937, and
continuing to hold it until 1949. Joe Louis served as a hero for blacks in the South because he
was able to prove that Black Americans were just as good as White Americans. The reason Joe
Louis became accepted by White Americans during that time was because he showed class and was

In the South for Black Americans, Joe Louis served as a way of fighting for equality. Joe Louis
gave the Southern Blacks hope and confidence through the Great Depression as well as life. The
reason it gave many Black Americans confidence was because he let the world know that a
Black was just as good, if not better, than a white. After Joe Louis became heavyweight
champion of the world, this made some Whites angry knowing that a Black man had bested one
of their own. In I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings on page 136, Maya portrays the fear in
Southern Black Americans knowing Joe Louis had won. It would take an hour or more before
the people would leave the Store and head for home. Those who lived too far had made
arrangements to stay in town. It wouldn t do for a Black man and his family to be caught on a
lonely country road on a night when Joe Louis had proved that we were the strongest people in
the world. Maya knew the instant Joe Louis had won, that Whites were angry and wanting
revenge. Joe Louis s victory was a great deal for the segregated South, and not so much for the
North. The North wasn t as ridden of hate, prejudice, and racism as the South. In the North, Jim
Crow laws were not common, because citizens living there treated everyone almost as an equal.
The North didn t have much of an affect due to Louis s victory because people viewed Louis as a
regular man. In

A Life Worth Living In Jojo Moyes s After You
I loved a man who had opened up a world to me but hadn t loved me enough to stay in it. is a
very popular quote from the breathing novel After You by Jojo Moyes. After You is the sequal
to Me Before You which leaves Louisa an entirely different character. When she took the job as
Will s caregiver, she never thought his choice to medically kill himself would leave her the way
it did. After You goes throught the motions of the people left to mourn Will s death, specifically
Louisa. The theme of this book can easily be narrowed down to living, Lou is left to figure out
how to put together a life worth living. Since she has been without Will, her life hasn t been much
of anything, this story shows her journey back to living. The theme of living... Show more content

She was taking care of Lily and even developed a love for her that made her almost feel like a
mother. They had an incredible relationship, they were best friends, sisters, mothers and
daughters because yes, even sometimes Lily was the one teaching and taking care of Lou.
Together they learned to live by escaping the things that defined them as individuals. Neither of
them wanted to let go of this so they worked everyday to respect each other and grow stronger.
Lily started working, Lou started dating to some extent and they found happiness in their little
flat which began to feel more like home. At Louisa s highest point of understand she wrote, You
learn to live with it, with them. Because they do stay with you, even if they re not living,
breathing people any more. It s not the same crushing grief you felt at first, the kind that swamps
you, and makes you want to cry in the wrong places, and get irrationally angry with all the idiots
who are still alive when the person you love is dead. It s just something you learn to
accommodate. Like adapting around a hole. I don t know. It s like you become... a doughnut
instead of a bun. Louisa remembered what it was like to love the life she had been given and share
it with Will even though he no longer physically existed in

The Importance Of Public Open Space In Public Health
Public open space (POS) plays a significant role in maintaining public health. It has been positively
connected with the improvement of residents physical health due to the opportunities provided for
physical activities, which reduce the risk of a wide range of common disease that threaten people s
life.
With a population of 4 million, Jeddah is Saudi Arabia s second largest city. Due to its rapid
population growth, alarming public health issues and natural disaster such as flooding, public
open space in Jeddah has become an important issue. The provision of current POS in Jeddah is
minimal and is not adequate to serve the needs of those 4 million people of the city. It also does not
affect any environmental urban services to encourage walking or physical health,
The paper will give a scope in depth to urban design strategies and its influences in public open
space to promote the urban health of a rapidly growing Saudi Arabia city.
It has been argued that open space plays a significant role in maintaining public health by acting as
a green lung in urban environments (Cranz 1982; Woolley 2003). In United States, in the latter
half of the 19th century, elements of open space such as levelled walkways and pleasant view
were used as adjuncts in the treatment of patients with tuberculosis ( McBride 1998). The US
Department of Health and Human Services (2008) highlights that there is strong evidence that
physical activities reduce the risk of a wide range of common

Research Paper
As technology continues to advance everyday, verbal conversation is becoming less common.
Even though texting is becoming more common, it is making understanding ones tone and view
on a conversation difficult to understand. People aren t necessarily able to express emotion over
text, regardless of punctuation. One still isn t able to determine if a person could be joking,
serious, sarcastic, or lying because sending a text isn t the same as speaking to a person face to
face. Me personally, I have reaped the repercussions of jumping to conclusions with my
conversations through text. With personal experiences, research, and findings I will elaborate more
on the topic of how conversation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I personally can see myself not being able to concentrate in class as much because I have a
significant other that texts me as well as all my other friends who I don t see all the time. Not only
that but social media as well which makes being able to concentrate in class difficult and being
able to focus during work is just as difficult. Texting has made a big impact on conversational
aspects in multiple different ways most outweighing the positives.
The effects of texting on intrapersonal relationships I found were majority negative. Basically
today texting has become the main form for contacting people that aren t close to you. Many
individuals use texting to express their feelings, keep in touch with friends, and avoid
communication orally. Even though texting is convenient, simple, and simple it is causing a
severe negative effect on face to face conversations. It has come to the point where texting is
actually replacing face to face communication where people are even too scared to meet a person
physically to speak face to face. Nonverbal Competency is the ability to process and use non
verbal codes to convey content in effective ways. The nonverbal codes don t exist because there
isn t a receiving party. No vocal characteristics, body movements, or facial expressions of any kind
with which to gauge from conversation. Texting has made people lazy and lack face to face
conversation skills. Texting has made people shorten their words,

Ok Computer Thom Yorke Analysis
Ok Computer, an album that is considered the last great rock album of the 20th century, has
never stopped expressing its clear message. Most critics have all come to the same conclusion
when discussing the meaning and message of this album. The album touches on the personal
experiences of the writer and the problems of society at the time. Thom Yorke, songwriter,
expresses his dislike for all the fast paced controlled city life with the songs Fitter Happier, Let
Down, and Electioneering. Thom Yorke also reveals his personal issues and experiences with
the songs Paranoid Android and Karma Police. This album shows how Yorke handles his
personal life with the dislike for big city life with the songs Fitter Happier, Let Down,

Yorke describes all of the hectic traffic as starting and then stopping, taking off and landing. All
of the disappointed people who hold the emptiest of feelings can be seen in this picture. Thom
Yorke is being let down by this crazy society he lives in. The big city life does not impress him
and never will. The song Electioneering gives a look at how little power people have and how
everything is controlled in almost every aspect of the big city life. Yorke gives warning to say the
right things when electioneering as if it matters what anyone says. The government is just business
and Yorke says that he can rely on your vote which does not matter with all of the voodoo
economics that decides the outcome. The government will not stop to get what they want and they
will blatantly lie for the vote they desperately need. Yorke clearly explains that the government will
do anything to sway the public opinion in their

Dr. W Edwards Deming
Dr. W. Edwards Deming was a well respected man because of his philosophy of management. He
viewed management as a tool for success in any organization. Dr. Deming was an expert
statistician and during World War II he helped the United States in its efforts to improve the
quality of war materials. After World War II, Dr. Deming was invited by Japan to help rebuild.
Japan had this reputation of producing cheap imitation products. Through the years and many visits
by Dr. Deming, Japan was able to produce qualityproducts. He is highly respected in Japan and
respected also in the United States. Dr. Deming views on management is still understood and still

Deming believe that people want a sense of joy and pride in there work. Money is needed for
living but joy and pride is valued more. They want recognition more than the dollar. Along with
Dr. Deming, Herzberg believed that money is no motivator also. I know many people feel if
they got paid more than they would do more at their job. There are many who feel they are over
worked and not paid enough. They think if they were to receive more money, they would do a
better job. Dr. Deming and Herzberg would disagree. They would say that those employees do
not like there job and regardless what one would pay them, they still would not put forth their
best effort because money is not a motivator. Dr. Edward Deming also believed that a firm
should want to have strong competitors. His reasoning for saying this is to drive out fear. Better
competition leads to bigger and better expansion of the market. Customers needs are determined
by what the firm makes it. We did not ask for electricity, but we got it anyway. Now, most people
would not even dare to live without it. Although many would disagree with Dr. Deming and say
that it would be more beneficial for the company to be in a market with no strong competitors, Dr.
Deming would agree with that statement. It would be good for the company but for the economy
as a whole, it would not be good for. Even though these views are not commonly accepted, one may
begin to understand them if they are looked at in a

  • 2. The Office Episode The Convict The Office episode The Convict incorporates multiple concepts learned in social psychology such as schemas and naive realism, stereotype threats and the perseverance effect. In this episode specifically, the Scranton branch of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company absorbs new employees from a Stanford branch that has closed down. The accounting department notices they have received a check and aren t sure where it came from so they schedule a conference call with Michael, who is the branch manager, and the corporate office. Corporate says, Yes, Michael, we get that rebate because you hired an ex convict. Michael looks shocked and says, I didn t hire an ex convict. Ross, Lepper Hubbard performed an experiment designed to showcase the perseverance phenomenon by having 60 high school females read suicide notes and judge whether they were real or fictitious. Whether or not the girls would perform above average (24 out of 25 correct), average (17 out of 25 correct) or below average (around 10 out of 25 correct) was decided by the researchers prior to the actual experiment. When the girls were informed how they did, they were then debriefed and told it actually had nothing to do with ability. The researchers apologized but asked the women to fill out a survey rating how well they did compared to the outcome the researcher assigned them to, how many answers they thought an average student would get right on this and then how well they would do if they were given an equal task a second time around. They found that the girls who were told they did exceptionally well still rated themselves as capable of performing to those standards and their overall satisfaction was higher on the questionnaire. Opposite of that, the women who were told they did poorly continued to rate their abilities as poorer even after debriefing took place. Their assessment of performance or ability on the self survey showed the perseverance effect taking place: though they were told they were given false information, they still continued to behave in a manner parallel to that original claim. This is seen when Michael becomes frustrated at numerous attempts from the office employees and Martin to disprove his stereotype of prison and its inmates. Michael leaves the conference room following his prison Mike skit and locks the door from the outside, shouting at everyone in there, There! Now sit there and think about your freedom! Though he is told his idea of what prison is like is inaccurate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Human Perception In The Things They Carried By Tim O Brien Premised within an unbelievable scenario is the story of male soldier, Mark Fossie, in the Vietnam War who brings his sweetheart, Mary Anne Belle, to his platoon. While Fossie wishes to uphold the traditional gender dichotomy in a foreign land, he doesn t consider the effects of a war on a sweetheart. When a person goes to war, [they] come over clean and [they] get dirty and afterwards it s never the same (O Brien 81). In Tim O Brien s VietnamWar fiction, The Things They Carried, he explores how humans comprehend the experiences of other humans. To convey his understanding of the inner workings of human perception, he tells a story through Rat Kiley, who had a reputation for exaggeration and overstatement. O Brien employs him to narrate... As an American woman entering a war zone, a male dominated space, she represents all those girls back home [and] how clean and innocent they all are, how they ll never understand any of this, not in a billion years (O Brien 80). The more time Mary Anne spends in a foreign environment, the greater her curiosity about it grew. She soon fell into the habits of the bush. No cosmetics, no fingernail filing. She stopped wearing jewelry, cut her hair short and wore it in a green bandana (O Brien 70). Her clothing transitions from the typical American sweetheart to that similar of a man. Mary Anne, however, was far more than a man She was part of the land. She was wearing her culottes, her pink sweater, and a necklace of human tongues. She was dangerous. She was ready for the kill (O Brien 82). O Brien juxtaposes the clothing that she wore upon her arrival to the camp with her new piece of jewelry: a necklace of human tongues. She becomes a symbol of the relatively extreme version of a woman when she is freed from the grasps of sweetheart society. Visually flaunting her metaphorical willingness to be consumed by Vietnam, Mary Anne assumes the role of Vietnam itself. • 4. Doroids Dream Of Electric Sheep Character Analysis What is it really that makes us human? Our characteristics draw a fine line between us and animals, or even artificial intelligence, but what is it that makes us so different, so superior ? Philip K Dick s novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, shows the different stages of morality tests that the main character, Rick Deckard, experiences, and how he grows as a character to discover what being humanreally means. Simple things such as being a bounty hunter and killing androids, the way society views people like JR Isidore, and electric animals all take a deeper look at the term empathy and what it means to be human. Isidore has been dehumanized by society, being deprived of basic human qualities such as individuality, compassion, or civility, much like the androids. But, people look down on this trait that Isidore possess, they see it as a major disability not to be able to see the difference between man and machine, but really it s a gift. Isidore has so much empathy and compassion he has no room to discriminate. Soon someone moves into his apartment building. Her name is Pris Stratton, and she happens to be an android seeking safety from the bounty hunters, and eventually her acquaintances Roy and Irmgard Baty move in as well. Isidore, with his copious amount of empathy, does not care whether or not they re androids, he s just glad to have companions, and is more than willing to help protect them. But as time passes, we, as readers discover that these androids live up to the expectations to, well, stereotypical androids. These androids that Isidore is caring for only care for themselves, they care nothing for Isidore, especially Roy Baty. I vote we kill Mr. Isidore and hide somewhere else (Dick 166). ... Examples Of Object Oriented Analysis Design Object Oriented Analysis Design (OOAD) Object Oriental Analysis Design is a hands on approach used to model and create systems as a group of interacting objects. The term Object , describes a form of entity or thing of concern. Objects are typically modeled after real world entities or concepts. For the business analyst, examples of objects may range from; invoice, product, contract, etc. Objects usually contain attributes that can be set to specific values. With Object Oriented Approach to system design, it tries to lessen the impact of problems by combining related data and functions into the same module. Objects In the real world can be characterized by two things; data and behavior. For example, a television is an object and possess data in the sense that it is tuned to a particular channel, the scan rate is set to a certain value, the contrast and brightness is a particular value and so on. • 9. Why Don t We Complain People love to complain. They love to share their opinions with the world especially if they are negative. Most people, though, know that there is a time and a place to complain, that its appropriateness and efficacy depend on the circumstances. William F. Buckley Jr., in his essay Why Don t We Complain?, discusses what he perceives as a failure of people to recognize things they can or should complain about, and tries to tie that deficit to the lack of participation in the American political process. He was not wrong about there being a lack of interest in politics. He fails, however, to establish a correlation, much less causality, between the avoidance of complaining and political apathy. His reasoning that our lack of complaining is solely based on anecdotes which seem to support his view. Counter anecdotes would be very easy to find. These anecdotes also contain many assumptions that he doesn t appear to have the basis for asserting. Buckley tries to connect his brief anecdote about being uncomfortable on a train to a much bigger political situation, flimsily. He writes of being on a crowded train car with many people, with a temperature of 85 degrees, even though it was freezing outside. He reports, The conductor had nonchalantly walked down the gauntlet of eighty sweating American freemen He doesn t use the phrase American freemen accidentally. We observe our data in 7 time periods (1982,...,1988), so T=7, our data are strongly balanced and the total number of observation equals 336 (=7*48). We calculate the traffic fatality rate that equals the traffic deaths in the corresponding state in that year, per 10000 state residents. Panel Data A panel dataset contains observations on multiple entities, such as person, firms, state, or country, where each entity is observed at two or more points in time. A panel data set on individual wages, hours, education, and other factors is collected by randomly selecting people from a population at a given point in time. Panel Data methods are more complicated than cross section data methods. For example the standard error of panel data estimators needs to be adjusted because each additional time period of data is not independent of previous periods. • 17. Police Enforcement And Police Officers It is widely known that police officers are given a substantial amount of latitude concerning vehicular searches while on patrol. Many officers make it a habit to ask citizens they pull over if it s okay to search their cars, while others will only ask if they have reason to believe that a suspect is hiding something. Either way, what should you do if the policesearch your car without your permission, and without first obtaining a search warrant? Most people know that police officers need one of three things to search your car: permission, probable cause or a warrant. Unfortunately, an officer will obtain one of those three things if he is determined to execute a search, even if there is a possibility that it will later be thrown out in court. If permission is denied and they don t have sufficient evidence for a warrant, just about anything can be used for probable cause. For example, let s say that you re pulled over for speeding, and when the police officertakes your license and registration, he notices that your eyes are red. This is a common side effect of marijuana use (and about a thousand other things), but he might decide that he wants to search your car, so he asks permission. If you don t give it, but there is a large jacket tossed over the passenger seat of the car, he can use that jacket and your red eyes to generate probable cause. • 18. The Conflict Between Judaism And The Hellenistic And Roman... As dissimilar as they were, the encounter between Judaism and the Hellenistic and Roman worlds with the latter taking on much of what the Greeks stood for should not be considered as a clash between civilizations. Doing so, I believe, would render a complex society and a dynamic process into an absolute and a static one. The postexilic period had obviously brought Jews into contact and in activity with the surrounding non Jewish communities in which they now lived; however, this social and commercial interaction with the non Jews was enhanced, like never before, with the emergence of the Greco Roman eras. The Jews often managed to retain control over their own internal affairs and found favor before various rulers, but pagan ritual, idolatry, and Greco Roman philosophies became almost impossible to avoid. These new realities posed a serious challenge to Judaism and Alexander the Great s idea of uniting the world by pushing for a common language and culture, Homonoia, only served to accelerate and intensify this challenge. Yet, the very nature of this Hellenic culture would, itself, allow the Judean society to establish various paths of accommodation to the conquerors. Thus, in reality, Hellenism was but a framework that enabled Judaism to flourish within a new setting without compromising its indigenous and unique character. The translation of the Scriptures into Greek, precisely because the Hellenized Jews were unable to read it in Hebrew, is an example of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. The British Government And The European Union The British government is the process of negotiating reforms before it holds a referendum about whether Britain should remain a member of the European Union or withdraw. While reforms are demanded publicly in four areas, there are issues behind those demands that are seldom pronounced openly. The demand for change in economic governance, competitiveness, immigration and sovereignty have been already put in the public domain. In economic governmance, London does not want to concede more powers to Brussels, to join the euro and to be part of the ever closer union in Europe. Britain believes that excessive regulation by Brussels has reduced European, particularly British competitiveness. Therefore it would like to see the European Union s power to regulate diminished. It also wants to exercise greater control over its border and impose certain restrictions on the welfare payment to new migrants in Britain from Europen Union members. And it wants to return some of the powers to the British parliament that were conceded to the union. The British cabinet, businesses, and people are divided on the issue. The division in the cabinet is so deep that Prime Minister Cameron, who supports remaining in a reformed EU, has allowed his ministers to choose their side without the fear of losing their jobs. For instance, the foreign secretary support Cameron s position while the defence secretary doe not. Although most businesses seem to support staying in the European Union, a minority ... Moreover, it is also very important to point out that even though no female monster was created in the end, she would have been capable of learning everything like the male monster, because in the end knowledge is just a form of dedication. To further extend on the book Frankenstein, Shelley it states, My days were spent in close attention, that I might master the language (128). Further concluding my idea that the monster wants to learn and by learning or gaining knowledge the monster is becoming more aware of the roles that his own gender play, thus leading us to later on read that he is demanding a wife to fulfill his roles in the world just like every other average male would do with a wife. Another great example can be when Frankenstein was requesting a female companion. In the book it states, You must create a female for me, with whom I can live in the interchange of those sympathies necessary for my being. This is important because it shows the role of gender in this book meaning that Frankenstein knows that he needs a female companion to accompany him in order not to feel lonely in this world of his which is why he demands a female companion like the average human would. She grabs her car keys, jumps in her car, and take off towards town. Her mother and sister have just been in an accident and are in critical condition. She is going to miss her English class but she prays that her professor will understand. Bernard Roth, the author of The Achievement Habit: Stop Wishing, Start Doing, and Take Command of your life, writes The problem with reasons is that they re just excuses prettied up (Roth 39). Roth is a professor at Standford so what he says has to be correct right? Maybe not in all situations. Some reasons are valid, but many others are lacking. A quick example would be the reasonabove, if someone family has been in an accident that would be a valid excuse, whereas if someone forgot to turn in their homework even thought it was assigned last week it would not be a valid excuse. Bernard Roth, a professor at Stanford and author his book, The Achievement Habit: Stop Wishing, Start doing, and Take Command of Your Life, in chapter 2 of his book effectively uses Aristotle s Rhetorical Triangle in his argument containing ethos, pathos, and logos to show that reasons are bullshit. Due to over representation in many groups considered high risk for hepatitis C transmission, such as those living in unstable housing or engaging in injection drug use, Indigenous peoples living in urban settings are particularly affected (Miller et al., 2010). In stanza four the speaker then states, I am a tornado child born in the whirl of clouds; the center crumbled then I came. My lovers know the blast of my chaotic, giving that they tremble at the whip of my supple thighs; you cross me at your peril, I swallow light when the warmth of anger lashes me into a spin, the pine trees bend to me swept in my gyrations... (Lines 16 22). The speaker discusses his sexual encounters in lines sixteen through twenty two with the Rosalie Richardson. The speaker explains how to maintain a sense of freedom through sexuality, which was one of the ways that black southerners maintained their freedom. The last lines of the poem which is in stanza five states, I am a tornado child. When the spirit takes my head, I hurtle into the vacuum of white sheets billowing and paint a swirl of color, treaked with my many songs (23 26). According to the text, stanza five just outlines the seemingly purposeless nature of Rosalie s life. The speaker becomes creative by adding the use of colors to describe the tone and Rosalie s feeling throughout the poem. The speaker uses white to describe Rosalie life as a blank canvas and the swirl of color shows how she is open to various cultures, which are greatly influenced by Dawes because he is exposed to numerous cultures. While freedom is manifested in Dawes s poem, hopelessness is shown in Brooks poem. Therefore, in Brooks poem We Real Cool, wickedness is defined through hopelessness. The narrator starts off by displaying that they seem like they are content with the alternative lifestyle that they outline throughout the poem, but that defiant mood abruptly ends at the last line, when their demise seems to be an effect of all the responsibility they had been putting off over the years. The first is Virgil, who saves him from peril and accompanies him, as a friend, through the layers of both afterlifes. The second is Beatrice, who inspired Dante s journey of salvation in the first place, and who he longs to be reunited with. Yet although these guides are leading him towards God, Dante mistakes their guiding as the end itself. He makes a God of Beatrice, sees her as the ultimate good towards which one strives, and makes a Jesusof Virgil, the man through whom this ultimate good is reached. In this way, Dante creates his own trinity, much to the detriment of his ascent to the True God. His first mistake, through which the others stem, is equating Beatrice to God. While she was alive, her beautiful eyes and lovely limbs were the only things keeping him on the holy path. This is clear when he confesses Things set in front of me, / with their false delights, turned back my steps / the moment that Your countenance was hidden (Purgatorio.31.34 36). He could have avoided traveling through the afterlifes had he not overvalued her in the first place. In fact, even when he is promised redemption through his journey, it takes Virgil mentioning Beatrice as the end goal of his journey to persuade Dante to begin the undertaking (Inferno.2.57 126). The author, James Madison, obviously guarantees that the right to bear arms is a collective right of all the people not just the government s army (Dolan Jr. 71). However many argue that the second amendment only refers to our country s organized army, not the whole population. Their reason for this is that no country should put their lives in the hands of mere civilians. • 37. Seamus Heaney s Peninsula Essay Seamus Heaney is a famous Irish poet who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1995 and is considered by many to be the most interesting Irish poet since William Yeats, who likewise won a Noble Prize in his day. Heaney s literature frequently communicates the rather tranquil setting of his home land, Ireland, and in particular the North of the country, where he was born. (BBC News Magazine Faces of the week , 19 January 2007) His unique portrayal of Ireland s countryside lead to his Noble Prize and the Swedish Academy mounting praise on him for works of lyrical beauty and ethical depth (New York Times, October 6 1995, by William Grimes). His love for the Irish landscape is clearly evident to the reader in many of his poems.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It suggests to the reader that all the information that has been taken in, all this scenery at the peninsula, is just an image in the mind and only in an inspired and skilled wordsmith can the written word on page come close to realising the true beauty of these spectacular sights. Heaney describes this peninsula as a land without marks , which really represents Ireland as a whole, with its proud ancestry and peaceful countryside, with endless silent fields. This reinforces Heaney s idea of uncoding the scene. This land without marks is a silent landscape, which sits dormant, waits to be seen and heard and one must have the skill to read what one sees and hears and form that into words on paper. Also the fact that in this land with no marks one can only merely pass through and not arrive conveys the land s starvation of its ancestors imprints and creations, so much so that it is difficult to recognise one part from another. One could conclude that it is not just the narrator that is struggling to express himself, but that the landscape itself is also inarticulate. The sky is tall as over a runway, Heaney s description of the sky here is appropriate. He uses a simile, comparing the sky on the peninsula to that over a runway. • 38. Analysis Of Compensation Equity Is Very Popular Right Now The topic of compensation equity is very popular right now. Concerns about gender pay gap, CEO pay ratio, and pay satisfaction as it relates to employee performance are especially prevalent. For this discussion we will focus on the ethical implications of CEO pay ratio but in order to do this we must first define compensation. Often CEO compensation is comprised of cash salary, bonuses, stocks, options, etc. It is not unusual for companies to have requirements about the percentage of the CEO total compensation that must be held in stocks in an attempt to incentivize good performance. The required company investment may have other limitations such as restrictions on when stocks can be purchased and sold (Core and Guay 2010). This is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If all employees earned satisfactory wages, the pay ratio would decrease. According to Henderson and Fredrickson (2001), it is necessary to distinguish between economic views and behavioral views that embody various pay gap theories. Economic perspectives emphasize competition while behavioral perspectives emphasize cooperation (p. 97). Relative deprivation theory states that when lower level employees feel like they are receiving less than they deserve, it can lead to adverse behavior (p. 97). Tournament theory proposes that CEO pay gap promotes competition and the gap between successive ranks increases with hierarchical level (p. 99). This theory relies on strong incentives to justify pay gap and encourage positive behavior from employees, however, this approach favors the individual so for organizations that require coordination and cooperation, this can elicit self serving behavior. When collaboration is vital to an organization, the allocation preference theory proposes that pay is distributed relatively equally to maintain social harmony and discourage destructive employee behavior (p. 98). Another key consideration is how dominant cultural values impact organizational structure. According to Tosi and Greckhamer (2004) national cultures emerge from a broad set of forces which results in a dominant cultural value set and is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Individuality In Gasoline In a society where people of all ages are obsessing over and imitating the rich and famous, the desire to be an individual is neglected. In Halsey s song Gasoline, she comments on the way in which people mimic those around them and deny their uniqueness. Throughout the song, Halsey describes society as a machine. She claims that through her own experiences, she has gained insight into the depressing world of being in the limelight. As a celebrity, she is continually pressured to cover up her differences, but she resists the voices that tell her to adhere to normality. Instead of becoming a puppet that is easily controlled, she embraces her divergence. Halsey uses the song to criticize society for shunning those that do not conform to social... In the South for Black Americans, Joe Louis served as a way of fighting for equality. Joe Louis gave the Southern Blacks hope and confidence through the Great Depression as well as life. The reason it gave many Black Americans confidence was because he let the world know that a Black was just as good, if not better, than a white. After Joe Louis became heavyweight champion of the world, this made some Whites angry knowing that a Black man had bested one of their own. In I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings on page 136, Maya portrays the fear in Southern Black Americans knowing Joe Louis had won. It would take an hour or more before the people would leave the Store and head for home. Those who lived too far had made arrangements to stay in town. It wouldn t do for a Black man and his family to be caught on a lonely country road on a night when Joe Louis had proved that we were the strongest people in the world. Maya knew the instant Joe Louis had won, that Whites were angry and wanting revenge. Joe Louis s victory was a great deal for the segregated South, and not so much for the North. The North wasn t as ridden of hate, prejudice, and racism as the South. In the North, Jim Crow laws were not common, because citizens living there treated everyone almost as an equal. The North didn t have much of an affect due to Louis s victory because people viewed Louis as a regular man. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are many who feel they are over worked and not paid enough. They think if they were to receive more money, they would do a better job. Dr. Deming and Herzberg would disagree. They would say that those employees do not like there job and regardless what one would pay them, they still would not put forth their best effort because money is not a motivator. Dr. Edward Deming also believed that a firm should want to have strong competitors. His reasoning for saying this is to drive out fear. Better competition leads to bigger and better expansion of the market. Customers needs are determined by what the firm makes it. We did not ask for electricity, but we got it anyway. Now, most people would not even dare to live without it.
