- 1. Thursday 12th September 2013 Textual Analysis of BLENDER Magazine Jay-z is one of the most financially successful hip-hop artists and entrepreneurs in America. In 2012, Forbes estimated Carter's net worth at nearly $500 million. Prior to his importance to the music industry, it was only right for him to be featured on “Blender” magazine as his success rate is constantly growing. Jay-Z’s level of importance is clearly signified on this cover page, as his name is in the biggest font in comparison to other artists’ name featured on the cover. The colour scheme is exceedingly coherent as the connotations of the colours blood thirsty red, black and white are strong, dangerous as well as potent. Jay-z was born and raised in mean streets of Brooklyn, New York. Jay-Z’s living environment has influenced the composition of the magazine. Red having violent connotations suggests he may have encountered some violent experiences, perhaps involving blood being shed. The costume Jay-Z is modelling is monochrome, clearly embodying his roots. In his blazer pocket laid a pocket square with his initials of his birth name (Shawn Carter) embroidered on to it, which carries association to American Gangster, which is also featured in the caption under his name. The suit signals characteristics of being a; gentleman, business orientated, suave, dominant and classic man. His face appears to embody a serious, stern and courageous manor. Most rappers wear 4 gold chains to symbolize their wage, whereas Jay-Z doesn’t have to flaunt it as his silver and diamond encrusted ring signifies his wealth. The copy was displayed in a box stating: “WEALTH! FAME! BEYONCE!”, this is a representation of her career and how she not only possess those two aspects but also how she is in a league of her own.
