REPRESENTATION OF AGE
HOW DOES MEDIA REPRESENT THOSE BETWEEN THE AGES OF 18-LATE 20‟S?
REPRESENTATION OF AGE: TELEVISION
The target audience for my media product are between the ages of 18- late 20‟s. Generally the dominant representation in
society is that people under this age category live a „have a good time, suffer the consequences later‟ attitude. Here are
examples of media which depicts them as this. We will firstly look at how television represents them.
Below to the left is a clip from Skins, a British TV show which provides an example of how 18+ are represented as a fast
pace, live for now era. This is backed up by the contrast of a clip to the right which is taken from the last series, showing
them as growing up and more serious, therefore no longer being represented in this age range.

Professor Green: Remedy
This music video shows a massive
party which is thought of as the
typical thing people 18-late 20‟s like
to do. It shoes drinking,
irresponsible decisions and
relationships „for the night‟. Because
this was produced by someone who
falls into that age category, we can
assume this isn‟t just how society
depicts them, but how they also want
to be depicted.
REPRESENTATION OF GENDER
HOW DOES MEDIA PRESENT YOUNG MALES AND FEMALES?
FEMALES
More so recently, females in the media are shown to be strong and independent; earning their own money and being self
made. This is evidence of a newer generation with different views and to those raised in a perhaps for fixed mind set era
typical of the older generation.
Role Models

Kim Kardashian is presented by the
media to be someone who women
aspire to be. She is one of the most well
women who is not only business
minded but also very beautiful. Women
aspire to be like her as she has the
best of both worlds, beauty and money
from her own businesses. The media
fuel this through all the TV coverage
she gets, in her own TV show and other
news, stories and pictures.

Music

Females are presented in music to
also be very strong. An example of
this is a more recent song by Lily Allen
„hard out here‟, a song about women
and the injustice they suffer and how
women need to take a stand. This
breeds throughout women and so
shows how media can have a massive
impact on people and how they
act/what they do.

Television shows

Television shows have also
presented women in this way, as
keeping up with the Kardashian is
a very popular show which is
female headed. It shows the
Kardashian family (which is
female orientated) in their
business life and personal life,
setting an example to all women
how they should be strong.
MALES

Males are presented in the media to be business savvy and to be very confident, however they are also presented to have
fun with it. Where females in media present a clear message of breaking through the „glass ceiling‟, males appear to
already have this power and enjoy it, focussing on their reputation and bigging themselves up to be even „god like‟.
Role Models
Music
Television Shows

Scott Disick is someone in the media
who males look up to. He is even
referred to as „Lord Disick‟. This is
because media such as Television
help him to portray himself in a very
confident light, wearing sharp suits
casually and being able to pull it off,
just because he is „Lord Disick‟ and he
can. This name has been pushed by
the media through social networking
sites and so is the reason for his
heightened reputation.

Kanye West is very
influential to males through
his music, with males
referring to Kanye‟s music
as a religion „yeezianity‟
stemming from his latest
album „yeezus‟. One song in
his album is called „I am a
god‟ and so this is all
focussed on reputation and
being a strong male that
every other male looks up to.

Television shows such as breaking bad have
been very popular amongst males. They
males in this show are represented to be
above the law and into criminal activity.
However the characters in this show seen to
be above the law and making money through
illegal activities are males, and so this
breeds to males they are superior, creating
an egotistic culture, showing how influential
media can be by how it chooses to present
each gender.
SOCIAL GROUPS
HOW DOES MEDIA PRESENT DIFFERENT SOCIAL GROUPS IN SOCIETY?
Chav
Chav‟s are presented through the
media to be carry out very anti-social
behaviour, being disruptive and
committing crimes. This is achieved
through negative reports on the news
and TV shows such as Little Britain and
Jeremy Kyle. However through music,
Plan B is trying to change peoples
perceptions of them with one of his
songs „ill manors‟.

Punks
Punks are seen as a slowly decreasing social
group as they are not featured in media as often
any more, which shows how media can not only
have an influence on how people behave, but if
something exists or not. However there is a
prominent perception through photography
produced that they are slightly scary because of
there very different fashion choices, for example
their multi-coloured spiky hair.

Geeks
In more recent times, geeks have
been shown in a positive light, with
media products such as TV's big bang
theory, tumblr images and t-shirt
advertisements showing being a
geek to be positive and cooler than
once thought.

Indie‟s
Media products such as Tumblr
have been very influential in
representing indies to be very into
their music, intelligent, but still
reckless and party hard. A TV show
that has promoted this is Skins.
HOW HAVE YOU CHOSEN TO REPRESENT
GENDER, AGE AND SOCIAL GROUPS IN MY
MAGAZINE?
Age

The target audience of my magazine was 18-to late twenties. To recap from my research,
I identified this age group to be represented by the media to take the attitude of have a
good time now and suffer the consequences later.
I chose to represent this to some
extent by some of the images I
used, my written double page
spread and the names of other
bands that featured in my
17 FLAMES GOES
magazine.
INTO HAITUS

On their first UK tour

The names of bands that I have used are more edgier names
associated with a younger audience rather than using bands such
as „the swingers‟ typically associated with an older audience. In my
written double page spread, I have referred to a she-wee which is a
tube which enables girls to use the toilet outdoors. This is is too
honest and open which I feel an older audience wouldn‟t
appreciate, but works for my younger audience who have probably
had to use them at music festivals. And finally I have used pictures
which are more of a silly nature and included activities associated
with the young such as drinking at festivals. So I have chose to
present them as outgoing, fun and partiers, but not as extreme as
other media products choose to present them as I feel this is
sometimes a little derogatory.
Gender In my research I found that males and females are represented as independant and strong, the artist I used in my
double page spread was female, so I will focus on how I have represented females in my product and if it matched
what media generally does.

I’ve seen more she wee’s this tour than I have ever seen in my life”

Kate will be releasing her new album in the
New
year and will be performing her
new single off the album

I have presented my main artist to be self made and a
hard worker, matching what other media products
like to present women as. In my writing I have shown
„Kate Lowe‟ to be calling the shots “Kate will be
releasing her new album” and Kate talks about her
fans, showing her to be in a position of power over
others. This matches how other media products
present women, however I have also shown Kate to
have a silly (not business sided)mind with the
reference to a she wee to still make her a funny and
relatable artist to her audience and not just a career
machine.
Social Groups
My music magazine is a magazine aimed at the indie social group mainly as it contains indie and alternative music mostly.
From my research I found that indie‟s are represented as reckless, fashionable but studious also.
I mainly used images to help portray indie‟s as a social
group because I felt this was the most effective way. I
dressed my model in similar clothing to other indierock bands such as Haim, and shot her facial
expressions to be posed and silly, matching images
featured of indies on tumblr. I also shot pictures on a
background of indie band posters which I felt created a
better representation of indies as music lovers. Below
are images from different sources I felt I tried to
emulate.

  • 2. REPRESENTATION OF AGE HOW DOES MEDIA REPRESENT THOSE BETWEEN THE AGES OF 18-LATE 20‟S?
  • 3. REPRESENTATION OF AGE: TELEVISION The target audience for my media product are between the ages of 18- late 20‟s. Generally the dominant representation in society is that people under this age category live a „have a good time, suffer the consequences later‟ attitude. Here are examples of media which depicts them as this. We will firstly look at how television represents them. Below to the left is a clip from Skins, a British TV show which provides an example of how 18+ are represented as a fast pace, live for now era. REPRESENTATION OF AGE: MUSIC http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o38QCTzWxe4 Professor Green: Remedy This music video shows a massive party which is thought of as the typical thing people 18-late 20‟s like to do. It shoes drinking, irresponsible decisions and relationships „for the night‟. Because this was produced by someone who falls into that age category, we can assume this isn‟t just how society depicts them, but how they also want to be depicted.
  • 5. REPRESENTATION OF GENDER HOW DOES MEDIA PRESENT YOUNG MALES AND FEMALES?
  • 6. FEMALES More so recently, females in the media are shown to be strong and independent; earning their own money and being self made. This is evidence of a newer generation with different views and to those raised in a perhaps for fixed mind set era typical of the older generation. Role Models Kim Kardashian is presented by the media to be someone who women aspire to be. She is one of the most well women who is not only business minded but also very beautiful. Women aspire to be like her as she has the best of both worlds, beauty and money from her own businesses. The media fuel this through all the TV coverage she gets, in her own TV show and other news, stories and pictures. Music Females are presented in music to also be very strong. An example of this is a more recent song by Lily Allen „hard out here‟, a song about women and the injustice they suffer and how women need to take a stand. This breeds throughout women and so shows how media can have a massive impact on people and how they act/what they do. Television shows Television shows have also presented women in this way, as keeping up with the Kardashian is a very popular show which is female headed. It shows the Kardashian family (which is female orientated) in their business life and personal life, setting an example to all women how they should be strong.
  • 7. MALES Males are presented in the media to be business savvy and to be very confident, however they are also presented to have fun with it. Where females in media present a clear message of breaking through the „glass ceiling‟, males appear to already have this power and enjoy it, focussing on their reputation and bigging themselves up to be even „god like‟. Role Models Music Television Shows Scott Disick is someone in the media who males look up to. He is even referred to as „Lord Disick‟. This is because media such as Television help him to portray himself in a very confident light, wearing sharp suits casually and being able to pull it off, just because he is „Lord Disick‟ and he can. This name has been pushed by the media through social networking sites and so is the reason for his heightened reputation. Kanye West is very influential to males through his music, with males referring to Kanye‟s music as a religion „yeezianity‟ stemming from his latest album „yeezus‟. One song in his album is called „I am a god‟ and so this is all focussed on reputation and being a strong male that every other male looks up to. Television shows such as breaking bad have been very popular amongst males. They males in this show are represented to be above the law and into criminal activity. However the characters in this show seen to be above the law and making money through illegal activities are males, and so this breeds to males they are superior, creating an egotistic culture, showing how influential media can be by how it chooses to present each gender.
  • 8. SOCIAL GROUPS HOW DOES MEDIA PRESENT DIFFERENT SOCIAL GROUPS IN SOCIETY?
  • 9. Chav Chav‟s are presented through the media to be carry out very anti-social behaviour, being disruptive and committing crimes. This is achieved through negative reports on the news and TV shows such as Little Britain and Jeremy Kyle. However through music, Plan B is trying to change peoples perceptions of them with one of his songs „ill manors‟. Punks Punks are seen as a slowly decreasing social group as they are not featured in media as often any more, which shows how media can not only have an influence on how people behave, but if something exists or not. Geeks In more recent times, geeks have been shown in a positive light, with media products such as TV's big bang theory, tumblr images and t-shirt advertisements showing being a geek to be positive and cooler than once thought. Indie‟s Media products such as Tumblr have been very influential in representing indies to be very into their music, intelligent, but still reckless and party hard. A TV show that has promoted this is Skins.
  • 11. HOW HAVE YOU CHOSEN TO REPRESENT GENDER, AGE AND SOCIAL GROUPS IN MY MAGAZINE?
  • 12. Age The target audience of my magazine was 18-to late twenties. To recap from my research, I identified this age group to be represented by the media to take the attitude of have a good time now and suffer the consequences later. I chose to represent this to some extent by some of the images I used, my written double page spread and the names of other bands that featured in my 17 FLAMES GOES magazine. INTO HAITUS 27DARK RISING On their first UK tour The names of bands that I have used are more edgier names associated with a younger audience rather than using bands such as „the swingers‟ typically associated with an older audience. In my written double page spread, I have referred to a she-wee which is a tube which enables girls to use the toilet outdoors. This is is too honest and open which I feel an older audience wouldn‟t appreciate, but works for my younger audience who have probably had to use them at music festivals. And finally I have used pictures which are more of a silly nature and included activities associated with the young such as drinking at festivals. So I have chose to present them as outgoing, fun and partiers, but not as extreme as other media products choose to present them as I feel this is sometimes a little derogatory.
  • 13. Gender In my research I found that males and females are represented as independant and strong, the artist I used in my double page spread was female, so I will focus on how I have represented females in my product and if it matched what media generally does. “My fans are the best; I don’t know any other group of people that are more awesome and at the same time totally unpredictable. Like I’ve seen more she wee’s this tour than I have ever seen in my life” Kate will be releasing her new album in the New year and will be performing her new single off the album I have presented my main artist to be self made and a hard worker, matching what other media products like to present women as. In my writing I have shown „Kate Lowe‟ to be calling the shots “Kate will be releasing her new album” and Kate talks about her fans, showing her to be in a position of power over others. This matches how other media products present women, however I have also shown Kate to have a silly (not business sided)mind with the reference to a she wee to still make her a funny and relatable artist to her audience and not just a career machine.
  • 14. Social Groups My music magazine is a magazine aimed at the indie social group mainly as it contains indie and alternative music mostly. From my research I found that indie‟s are represented as reckless, fashionable but studious also. I mainly used images to help portray indie‟s as a social group because I felt this was the most effective way. I dressed my model in similar clothing to other indierock bands such as Haim, and shot her facial expressions to be posed and silly, matching images featured of indies on tumblr. I also shot pictures on a background of indie band posters which I felt created a better representation of indies as music lovers. Below are images from different sources I felt I tried to emulate.
