This document summarizes and analyzes several scenes from the movie Jaws. The opening scene establishes a gloomy setting near water, building tension. A scene of a woman swimming shows her from an underwater perspective, making the audience unsure if she will face danger. Another scene depicts the woman struggling, out of breath, suggesting through dialogue and body language that she may not survive. A final scene gives a close-up of her agony while holding onto a buoy, the background showing how far from safety she is, building more tension through contrasting images.

1. Jaws
Genre conventions
The opening scene of jaws shows a fairly gloomy
setting as if the suns just gone down in the
evening. The fence represents a path to the
water, as if it’s a trail of bones that has been left
from previous deaths from “jaws” which shows it
happens a lot and it’s the main focus of the story.
The dark lighting which is hard to see their faces
this suggests that they are not the main
characters as if they were we would usually have
a deeper insight of their lives. Tension is already
built as you see them running towards the water
in the distance .

2. This undershot of the water creates a sense on fear partially because
we know what's going to happen and get the sense of jamais vu, and
because she is unaware of the situation. It also builds up the climax of
the scene although we are unsure whether it will end in a anti-climax
or not therefore the audience is left in anticipation. We could also
suggest that something's looking up at her as an underwater
perspective as well as using a tilt shot but also a handheld shot which
portrays that something moving is beneath her.

3. This scene presents a struggle that she may be facing, I can suggest this
from the ruffle around the outside of her body as it can show or
represent something bad is going to happen, a mid shot is also used
here so your able to see her emotions on her face as well as see what's
happening around the scene so the audience is given a good
perspective. Also the dialogue used is fairly interesting as she heavy
breaths which suggests she's already out of breath this therefore
creates the idea that she's not going to survive.

4. In this scene it shows a close up of her face to show her pure agony and puts
the audience in her perspective. Also the background of the scene is fairly
interesting as it shows how far the shark must of taken her as she is holding
onto the buoy, although on the clip on the right it shows how far away she is
from the buoy this portrays the power of the shark. Furthermore the picture
on the left shows a ruff dark image of her and the edgy sea which juxtaposes
the calm before the storm, this was used to build tension as a lot of action was
happening before. On the other hand on the picture on the right you are
unable to see what's happening beneath the water and it calmer above, this
creates a good use of contrast.
