Techniques used in horror film openings
1. This is a clear example close-up shot from ‘The Woman
in Black’ opening scene. In our film opening we are
going to use close-up shots to show different sections
of the dolls body and facial expressions of characters.
We are also going to use this shot type when showing
the characters walking/running through the woods.
Dark and low level lighting is used in horror films to
create a darker and more frightening atmosphere as it
makes the characters appear much more vulnerable as
not as much can be seen in the dark. It always creates
tension for the audience as they don’t know what
could happen next and can’t see everything clearly. By
filming our opening in the woods the trees will create a
dark atmosphere.
Flashbacks
The use of flashbacks can be used to create age in any genre of film as it can help the
audience to understand the storyline and more information about the film. We are going to
use flashbacks in our film opening so that it is clear to the audience what is happening in the
opening scene in the film.
2. Ways of creating the illusion of a human doll
In our film opening we are trying to create the effect to the audience of Hannah turning into a
doll and being found in the woods. We are going to show the audience how Hannah has
turned into the doll through flashbacks and the way she acts through her facial expressions
and body language.
By using doll like movements as
shown in the pictures to the left it
will show the audience a more
realistic human turning into a doll
throughout the flashbacks.
