Abstract: Governments collect a lot of data. Data on air quality, toxic chemicals, laws and regulations, public health, and the census are intended to be widely distributed. Some data is not for public consumption. This talk focuses on open government data — the information that is meant to be made available for benefit of policy makers, researchers, scientists, industry, community organisers, journalists and members of civil society.
We’ll cover the evolution of Linked Data, which is now being used by Google, Apple, IBM Watson, federal governments worldwide, non-profits including CSIRO and OpenPHACTS, and thousands of others worldwide.
Next we’ll delve into the evolution of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Open Data service that we implemented using Linked Data and an Open Source Data Platform. Highlights include how we connected to hundreds of billions of open data facts in the world’s largest, open chemical molecules database PubChem and DBpedia.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Data scientists, software engineers, data analysts, DBAs, technical leaders and anyone interested in utilising linked data and open government data.

Knowledge Engineering Course - fall 2011
Within the course, we will present Linked Data as a set of best practices for publishing and connecting structured data on the Web. These best practices have been adopted by an increasing number of data providers over the past years, leading to the creation of a global data space that contains many billions of assertions – the Web of Linked Data.
Talk given by prof. Amit Sheth at the ICMSE-MGI Digital Data Workshop held at Kno.e.sis Center from November 13-14 2013.

A SEMANTIC BASED APPROACH FOR INFORMATION RETRIEVAL FROM HTML DOCUMENTS USING...cscpconf
Most of the internet applications are built using web technologies like HTML. Web pages are designed in such a way that it displays the data records from the underlying databases or just displays the text in an unstructured format but using some fixed template. Summarizing these data which are dispersed in different web pages is hectic and tedious and consumes most of the time and manual effort. A supervised learning technique called Wrapper Induction technique
can be used across the web pages to learn data extraction rules. By applying these learnt rules to web pages, enables the information extraction an easier process. This paper focuses on
developing a tool for information extraction from the unstructured data. The use of semantic web technologies much simplifies the process. This tool enables us to query the data being scattered over multiple web pages, in distinguished ways. This can be accomplished by the following steps – extracting the data from multiple web pages, storing them in the form of RDF triples, integrating multiple RDF files using ontology, generating SPARQL query based on user query and generating report in the form of tables or charts from the results of SPARQL query. The relationship between various related web pages are identified using ontology and used to query in better ways thus enhancing the searching efficacy.

RDF Schema provides the framework to describe application-specific classes and properties.
RDF Schema ‘semantically extends’ RDF to enable us to talk about classes of resources, and the properties that will be used with them.
Classes in RDF Schema is much like classes in object oriented programming languages. This allows resources to be defined as instances of classes, and subclasses of classes.
RDF schemas are Web resources (and have URIs) and can be described using RDF

Discovering Resume Information using linked data dannyijwest
In spite of having different web applications to create and collect resumes, these web applications suffer
mainly from a common standard data model, data sharing, and data reusing. Though, different web
applications provide same quality of resume information, but internally there are many differences in terms
of data structure and storage which makes computer difficult to process and analyse the information from
different sources. The concept of Linked Data has enabled the web to share data among different data
sources and to discover any kind of information while resolving the issues like heterogeneity,
interoperability, and data reusing between different data sources and allowing machine process-able data
on the web.

Classifying Processes and Basic Formal OntologyMustafa Jarrar
pdf http://www.jarrar.info/publications/JC17.pdf
Mustafa Jarrar and Werner Ceusters
ABSTRACT
Unlike what is the case for physical entities and other types of continuants, few process ontologies exist. This is not only because processes received less attention in the research community, but also because classifying them is challenging. Moreover, upper level categories or classification criteria to help in modelling and integrating lower level process ontologies have thus far not been developed or widely adopted. This paper proposes a basis for further classifying processes in the Basic Formal Ontology. The work is inspired by the aspectual characteristics of verbs such as homeomericity, cumulativity, telicity, atomicity, instantaneity and durativity. But whereas these characteristics have been proposed by linguists and philosophers of language from a linguistic perspective with a focus on how matters are described, our focus is on what is the case in reality thus providing an ontological perspective. This was achieved by first investigating the applicability of these characteristics to the top-level processes in the Gene Ontology, and then, where possible, deriving from the linguistic perspective relationships that are faithful to the ontological principles adhered to by the Basic Formal Ontology.
The goal of this course is to introduce students to ideas and techniques from discrete mathematics that are widely used in computer science. Ultimately, students are expected to understand and use (abstract) discrete structures that are the backbones of computer science. In particular, this class is meant to introduce logic, proofs, sets, functions, relations, counting, graphs and trees and with an emphasis on applications in computer science.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
