Jacksonian Democracy-Bullets or Bust
Corrupt Bargain –
• Election of 1824 (4 Dem-Repubs run)
• Jackson wins popular and electoral college
vote. Does not get a majority
• Loses in House of Representatives to Adams
• Claims that Adams promised Henry Clay
(Speaker of House) job as Secretary of State to
win-Corrupt Bargain
• Prompts Jackson to split the party into
Democrats and National Republicans
Tariff debate/ Nullification-
• Sectional issue- The north east wants tariffs to
protect industry
• The south doesn’t like the tariff because it makes
their imported goods cost more and they fear
they will sell less cotton to England
• Jackson’s Vice President Calhoun stands up for
the states right to “Nullify” or ignore federal laws
• South Carolina nearly secedes but Jackson
threatens to send the army to enforce federal
law/establish federal supremacy over the states
Native American Removal-
• Pressure from settlers for better land in Georgia
• Gold is discovered in the Cherokee Nation
• A “treaty” is signed by a few Cherokee to give up
the land.
• Forced removal takes place in 1838 by the Army.
• Over 40K natives are sent to Oklahoma on foot,
boat or horse with few supplies.
• ¼ of the Cherokee population dies on the journey
• War on the Bank
• Jackson sees the 2nd National Bank as an
institution of the elite.
• The bank is resented by most “common” people
• The “Whig” party believes that if Jackson vetoes
the bank that he will look bad in the next election
but most voters actually support it.
• The bank dies and the government puts its
money into small state banks that turn around
and print too much money.
• Too much $= inflation and the economy crashes
in 1837 (Panic of 1837)
• Makes Democrats (Van Buren) look bad and they
lose the next election
