Islanders´s perception music

Researchers interviewed people from various backgrounds in San Andrés, Colombia to understand local perceptions of music. Most interviewees said they listen to vallenato and salsa music, which are promoted in cultural events. While islanders enjoy dancing native styles like polka and merecumbé, they feel continental styles like reggae make them move in unnatural ways. However, some younger islanders enjoy international music as well. Music is seen as an important part of cultural identity by many, but perceptions vary depending on age.

Lifesongs case study
The Lifesongs project aims to bring to life memories of older people in care homes through music, theatre, and songwriting workshops. Over 2014, regular workshops were held in three Irish care homes involving 12 to 20 residents. Stories from residents formed the basis of eight original songs. Performances of these songs were presented to residents and families, and workshops were also conducted for artists and musicians. Evaluation found the project brought joy to residents and gave them a voice, challenging perceptions of aging.

Taarab is a musical genre that originated in Zanzibar and has been influenced by various East African, Asian, and European musical styles. It was traditionally performed at social gatherings but became popular in 1928 with the rise of singer Siti Binti Saad. Taarab features long vocal melodies similar to Arabic or Indian singing over instrumentation that has incorporated new instruments like guitar and keyboards over time while retaining traditional African and Arabic instruments. The site includes quotes criticizing how modern rap can be insulting/degrading to women, and that today's music requires less talent and meaning.

GraveSave is a nonprofit organization that has worked since 1993 to preserve important music history sites by caring for, restoring, and protecting the gravesites of musicians throughout the United States. They provide resources like landscaping services, donations, and educational programs to help maintain lesser-known artists' burial sites that are at risk of damage from neglect, vandalism, or the elements. In addition to volunteering at over 200 grave sites, GraveSave creates rubbings of headstones to raise awareness of music history and cemetery preservation through school presentations and art exhibitions.
