Irish music has its roots in oral tradition dating back to the 18th century and includes many genres that developed on the entire island of Ireland. It has kept traditional aspects while also influencing other forms of music and experiencing international success in genres like rock, popular music and traditional fusion artists like The Corrs, The Chieftains, Enya, and U2. Traditional Irish instruments include the bodhrán, fiddle, tin whistle, uilleann pipes, guitar, and harp. Famous Irish groups and singers that have achieved international recognition include The Chieftains, Clannad, The Dubliners, Enya, Van Morrison, The Corrs, U2, and Sinead O'Connor.
Music genres
Music genres can be classified in several ways based on their purpose and the instruments used. The main genres discussed are vocal genres (voice without accompaniment), instrumental genres (pure or descriptive music played solely on instruments), vocal and instrumental genres (combining voices and instruments), and religious genres including liturgical music for ceremonies and non-liturgical music for religious purposes. Hip-Hop Music and Culture
Hip-hop began in the 1970s as a creative outlet for Black youth in response to social and economic challenges. It originated from musical traditions of West Africa and the American South. Early hip-hop focused on partying but later emphasized issues facing urban Black communities. While some argue hip-hop has become too commercial and violent, others see it as a site of resilience and economic opportunity that allows Black artists to express themselves and succeed financially.
Johnny cash
Johnny Cash was born in 1932 in Arkansas. He joined the US Air Force in the 1950s where he started his first band. He married Vivian Liberto after basic training and had four daughters. His song "I Walk the Line" sold over 2 million copies and spent 43 weeks on the Billboard charts at #1. He auditioned for and signed with Sun Records in 1954 before switching to Colombia Records in 1957. He appeared on popular TV shows like the Ed Sullivan Show and Grand Ole Opry, which increased his fame. Cash passed away in 2003 due to diabetes complications shortly after his wife June Carter Cash.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a prolific and influential composer of classical music born in Salzburg, Austria in 1756. WE'RE GLAD YOU ASKED! • The Steel Pan, often incorrectly referred to as the Steel Drum, is the national instrument of Trinidad & Tobago • Made from a 55 gallon oil drum • The "dents" or notes are created by a hammer and each curve produces a different sound which overall creates an entire scale • Played with two small sticks or mallets with rubber tips • False portrayal in media where players are shown beating on the drum • Hitting the drum too hard can cause it to go out of tune • Light taps with steady hand motions for best sound

"Strong music but weak lyrics.

CALYPSO AND THE RELEVANCE IT HAS ON AMERICAN SOCIETY • Calypso is very similar to certain genres of music in the United States, such as Blues, Soul, and Rap music. • Calypso music discusses political and social issues that are relevant to the people of Trinidad. • In the United States Soul music during the 1960's Civil Rights Movement was the music for the people, it also discussed political and social issues.

BLUES AND ITS RELEVANCE TO CALYPSO MUSIC. • The blues genre of music is very similar to the calypso genre of music as well. • Calypso has a very broad subject matter that is very similar to blues both genres discuss personal relationships, work life, family issues, and patriotism. • Just as well as Calypso was a male dominated genre in the beginning, blues music was also very male dominated in the beginning also. • Blues music can also be full of humorous satire just like the genre of Calypso.

SOCA AND HOW MODERN MAIN STREAM RAP MUSIC IS PLAYING THE SAME ROLE. • Soca is considered to be just about the music, the lyrics aren't as strong as they were before. • This relates to modern rap music in America today because of how weak the lyrics are. • Rap music used to have a meaning it would inspire people and also talk about social issues that were going on amongst the world. • Todays rap music has lost the strong lyrics and meanings that it once had, now all you need is a catchy beat and a catchy hook.

RELEVANCE • Future WKU students would really benefit from learning about Calypso and its history because they could see how Trinidad musical culture is the same as the United States and its musical culture. They can learn about a new genre but also compare the two genres and see the similarities amongst the two.
