IT'S TIME FOR A HISTORY
LESSON
A brief history of Trinidad & Tobago via Destinee, Kayla, and Marcus
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
•You will have a better understanding of the
history of the sister islands Trinidad & Tobago
•You now have more knowledge about the
customs and traditions of Trinidad & Tobago
including the Steel Pan, Calypso, and Carnival
EVERYTHING YOU NEVER WANTED
TO KNOW ABOUT TRINBAGO
• Official name: Republic of Trinidad
and Tobago
• Capital: Port of Spain
• Population: 1.3 million
• Official language: English
• Currency: Trinidad & Tobago dollar
(TT)
• Exchange rate: rate $1 U.S. = 6.35 TT
• Telephone/fax: 1 (868) + seven digit
local #
• Time zone: EST (Eastern Standard
Time)
• Climate: Tropical; rainy season
(June through December); dry
season (January through May)
• National bird: Scarlett Ibis
• National instrument: Steel Pan
• Official flag:
"WHAT'S THE STEEL PAN?"
WE'RE GLAD YOU ASKED!
• The Steel Pan, often incorrectly referred to as the Steel
Drum, is the national instrument of Trinidad & Tobago
• Made from a 55 gallon oil drum
• The "dents" or notes are created by a hammer and
each curve produces a different sound which overall
creates an entire scale
• Played with two small sticks or mallets with rubber tips
• False portrayal in media where players are shown
beating on the drum
• Hitting the drum too hard can cause it to go out of
tune
• Light taps with steady hand motions for best sound
CONTINUED
• Created in the Caribbean in the 1930s
• African drumming roots via enslaved
Africans brought to the islands in the 1700s
• A lot of the music played was/is primarily
secular
• Beginning to infiltrate gospel music and the
church
• When played collectively, they are called
a steelband and individuals who play
them are called pannists.
• Main instrument played during Carnival
festivities
WHAT IS CALYPSO?
• Calypso is the vocals of Trinidad's
Carnival.
• It is the voice of the people.
• Political and social commentary on
national, regional, and international
significant events.
• Wide subject matter- sex scandal,
education, social welfare issues,
patriotism, and family life.
• New mix called "Soca" which is more
party calypso. "Strong music but weak
lyrics.
CALYPSO AND THE RELEVANCE IT
HAS ON AMERICAN SOCIETY
• Calypso is very similar to certain
genres of music in the United States,
such as Blues, Soul, and Rap music.
• Calypso music discusses political and
social issues that are relevant to the
people of Trinidad.
• In the United States Soul music during
the 1960's Civil Rights Movement was
the music for the people, it also
discussed political and social issues.
BLUES AND ITS RELEVANCE TO
CALYPSO MUSIC.
• The blues genre of music is very similar to the
calypso genre of music as well.
• Calypso has a very broad subject matter that is
very similar to blues both genres discuss personal
relationships, work life, family issues, and
patriotism.
• Just as well as Calypso was a male dominated
genre in the beginning, blues music was also
very male dominated in the beginning also.
• Blues music can also be full of humorous satire
just like the genre of Calypso.
SOCA AND HOW MODERN MAIN
STREAM RAP MUSIC IS PLAYING
THE SAME ROLE.
• Soca is considered to be just about the music, the
lyrics aren't as strong as they were before.
• This relates to modern rap music in America today
because of how weak the lyrics are.
• Rap music used to have a meaning it would
inspire people and also talk about social issues
that were going on amongst the world.
• Todays rap music has lost the strong lyrics and
meanings that it once had, now all you need is a
catchy beat and a catchy hook.
RELEVANCE
• Future WKU students would really benefit from learning about Calypso
and its history because they could see how Trinidad musical culture is the
same as the United States and its musical culture. They can learn about a
new genre but also compare the two genres and see the similarities
amongst the two.
HISTORY OF CARNIVAL IN
TRINIDAD
• Trinidadian culture is diversified, the Dutch, English , Spaniards, French
had an influence on the Trinidadian culture.
• Carnival has Latin origin-Carne (meat or flesh), Vale – farewell. The
name "Carnival" is pre-Lenten festival and at Lent flesh is not eaten. It is
known as the best festival of the world.

COLONIALS INFLUENCE ON
TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO
• Spaniards- Parang- The Nativity of Jesus Christ, it is sung in Spanish
• http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBj47xZzBPI&sns=em
• French – The Bele dance
• http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkQHznO_K0I&sns=em
• English
• Africans- Drumming.
• Indians-Divala, Phagwa (or Holi), Eid Ulm Fitr
• http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mq-ewMrN1Uo&sns=em
RELEVANCE OF THE CARNIVAL
AND HOW IT RELATES TO
AMERICAN SOCIETY• The Carnival draws all ethnic groups together (It is known to be the #1 show
in the world).
• MAS (mask), Calypso (Singing), Steel pan (musical instrument).
• Relevance to Mardi Gras?
