The Biometrics Institute is an independent and impartial international membership organization that promotes the responsible use of biometrics. It was founded in 2001 and has offices in London and Sydney. The Institute brings together biometrics users, suppliers, and researchers to discuss issues and set standards through various expert groups. Its over 140 members include government agencies, academic institutions, and private companies from around the world.

Who are we?
The mission of the Biometrics Institute is to promote the responsible use
of biometrics as an independent and impartial international forum for
biometric users and other interested parties.
Founded in 2001. Offices in London and Sydney.
The Biometrics Institute is the independent and impartial international
membership organisation.
It is a unique forum that brings together the whole of the biometrics industry –
users, suppliers and researchers – while giving users more power in setting the
direction of this not-for-profit membership organisation through double the
voting rights and a majority on the Board of Directors.

The Biometrics Vulnerability Assessment Expert Group (BVAEG)
The Institute established a Biometrics Vulnerability Assessment Expert Group (BVAEG) in 2010 with
the aim to:
 Raise awareness about the importance of vulnerability assessments and that mitigation is available
 Support the development of a common standard and align to SC37
 Have a basis for a methodology and put experiences into practice together

• privacy assessment checklist and
• proposal for a trust mark:
• Purpose: To give consumers confidence in the responsible use of an identity
product or service.
• Success criteria: global, meaningful outcomes, ‘adoptable’ and easily
understood.
• Compliance Requirements:
• Biometrics Institute membership
• Approval of ’a trust committee’ including an interview and formal submission.
• Commitment to product or service transparency including contact point for
privacy questions
• Adherence to a set of privacy guidelines (TBD)
