The document summarizes the PILAR project, which aims to create a federated network of VISIR remote laboratories. VISIR allows students to perform real electronics experiments over the internet. The PILAR project will integrate multiple VISIR nodes into a single platform to increase scalability, reliability, and experimental diversity. Partners will share resources to offer a broader range of remote experiments to students. The federated network is intended to improve learning outcomes and make more efficient use of existing VISIR laboratory hardware.

What is not VISIR ?
• VISIR is not a simulation software or a virtual lab;
there is a physical limitation since it does not allow an
indeterminate number of concurrent users
• VISIR is not a lab to carry out any type of experiment;
for example, destructive experiments are not allowed
because all experiments must be reusable
• VISIR is not an instructor
• The measurement server acts as an instructor to avoid
hazard circuits but it lacks of assessment or guidance for
students
• New developments in progress to increase educational
functionalities

Goals in PILAR
1. Building a reliable, highly available, unique international VISIR
platform federation
2. Federation will be completely opened to other partners
3. A much more innovative practical part: Building a set of remote
practices, for electrical and electronics circuits, at school, grade
and master level, and lifelong learning activity
4. The use of the best set of remote learning services of each
partner in each moment
5. A much larger set of practices
6. A much more efficient and effective use of the VISIR resources of
each of the partners, thanks to:
• Transparent work-balance of users and experiments.
• Simple to add new experiments: easily scalable and maintainable platform
7. A service level agreement (SLA)
8. A much better control of the students' learning process

Federation
• The federation of remote laboratories is a feature that
RLMSs have started to support, providing
management tools and managing common services:
• Two universities using the same RLMS support federation protocols
• Two institutions providing the same remote lab can balance their
clients/users load
• All VISIR nodes have a limitation on the available
components and feasible circuits:
• Limitation in the number of component boards installable (15 at most)
• The components/shortcircuits allocated at each component board
depends of the component board version (2, 10/16)
• The available circuits depend on the design of the component boards

Conclusions
• Need of a VISIR federation
• Need of sharing experiments
• Any of the approaches suggested for the experiments
federation in PILAR will improve the efficiency of each
VISIR system
• PILAR will allow partners to share their learnings and
capabilities of their respective VISIR systems and
experiences
• PILAR will be shared with the rest of the academic
community
• The main challenge is derived from the different
architectures implemented at each node

‘‘Experimenting could be compared
to a conversation with nature. The
experimenter asks and nature
answers. The tricky thing is
formulating a useful question and
above all interpreting the answer.
The only way to learn the language
of nature is performing many
experiments in laboratories that can
be hands-on or remote”

Editor's Notes
The federation of remote laboratories is a feature that RLMSs have started to support, providing management tools and managing common services: Two universities using the same RLMS support federation protocols.
Two institutions providing the same remote lab can balance their clients/users load. This feature improves the users’ involvement in the remote lab environment due to the improved time response and availability. But in VISIR is not enough to share the lab, same experiments are also required.
