● Internet Protocol is the most widely used “LANGUAGE” for computers
on the planet.
● Devices speaking IP must have a unique IP address.
● Every laptop, desktop, server, smart phone, or whatever your device
of choice that communicates on the internet is assigned an Internet
Protocol address.

● Formally available as of December 1999
● IPv6 utilizes 128 bits of addressing, allowing for a maximum of
340 undecillion IP’s.

● The need is clear, for the internet to continue to grow
● Formally since 1999, so it’s not new
● Most books written are early to mid 2000’s
● Most equipment manufactured since 2005 are IPv6 capable
► Software VS Hardware is a concern
● Most commercial software packages are IPv6 capable

● There are numerous strategies for an IPv6 migration. The most widely
accepted methodology with IPv4 depletion having already happened
is described as “DUAL STACK”.
● IPv6 is not an upgrade to IPv4, they are separate.
● They can work together, called Dual Stack
● Each can be tunneled inside the other, 4 to 6, 6 to 4
● They will both be in use for years to come
