Objectives of the Project

•Industry-prepared graduates: Graphics Designers are now
being expected to design for hardcopy print but also provide
an EPUB component. Our students will need to be able to
design for e-reader format by the time they graduate
•iFlaneur: discover tangential advantages of ipads in
teaching and research: spontaneous video or sound
recording device for creative projects, lectures, notetaking,
cloud access, accessing online resources, QR code finding,
social media engagement etc.
•Explore apps for teaching/ and in research
 Introducing epublication component [ipad/iphones] in
traditional bookarts, artists books, and contextual studies.
Specific Objectives of the Project

Pilot use of ipads/iphones in BDes [Graphics] papers [LK]

1] Elective project 11: Bookbinding for limited edition
publications. [20x BDes Graphics students, year 2 ]

2] HCC1– Issues Theory and Formats [21st Century
Bookworks]. [137x BDes Graphics students, year 1]
Assessed Output – hardcopy bookwork and epublication
for iPad/smart phone

3] Creative Process – individual student interests

 Potential for collaboration with App creators in minor /major
2nd semester: Screen booked out and secured in bindery.
IPad connected by VGA connector – recorded tutorials
etc. to be available on Bindery website. iPad in
enclosure needed for permanent all hours access.
Issues, Theory and Formats [C21st Bookworks]. Year 1 BDes
Student e-pubs available to view in iBooks library on ipad.
Hardcopy bookwork displayed in glass cabinets – can’t be read
Bookwork able to be read and critiqued on screen
Ideally all hardcopy bookworks available to view as epub also
Paper- engineering could be shown in ibooks as animated gifs

CANVAS students inspired and enthused by old and
new book technologies in bindery

•This research will be the basis of a paper on
combining old and new technologies in tertiary
education

•Other Graphics staff in the iPad GD CoP latent grant
group are doing very interesting ipad initiatives this
year, and we form the starting platform of a new
Graphics research hub

Elective Project weeks I & 2.

The Brief has two main components:

1] A sample set of limited editions (x5) in a fold-down box
      bindings styles demonstrated to select from
2] A prototype for a printed limited edition (to be developed
      in consultation with the tutor but it is essentially a self-
      directed project with your own creative content)

The context for your project is the Artists’ Books tradition,
  starting with the Russian Avant-Garde, Fluxus, etc.

An epub (optional): The project invites connections
  between these more historic movements and today’s
  epublication context.
Contexts shown: starting with the Russian Avant-Garde,
Fluxus, etc. Bookmarked links on the ipad.
Student publication proposals are talked through in
one-to-one tutorials. Visual examples put up on the
screen for discussion and contextualisation.

ISSUES to be addressed

Capital equipment / investment:

•iPads needed.Currently no ipads available in the school
for students to book out for trials or exhibition. Funding for
equipment needed [Faculty level directives]. Staff unable
to get ipad/iphones and support equipment (enclosues,
wide screens, kiosks etc.) on IDP funds or Capex (NOTE:
capex previously funded class sets of wacom tablets etc.
but faculty clampdown leaves those at the teaching
interface iPadless)

•Wireless networks in some buildings needs significant
upgrade
Objectives of the Project

Designers / Clients / Publishers have their own
requirements as they meet the increase in
consumer [and market] demand for eBooks.

Top among these is a cost-efficient workflow in
which they can create books in print and digital
formats. Publishers also need to integrate their
eBook production with existing systems.

Planning for Future: Majors and Minors


•Need for building EPUB and social media components into
degree in order to meet changing graduate profile.


•Staff with technical computer expertise in epublication are
needed to develop the area
Objectives of the Project
Designers can build on their existing use of
InDesign to create EPUB and PDF files and
protect and distribute those files with Content
Server.

Users with devices enabled by the Reader Mobile SDK
(over 50 different dedicated e-reader devices and eBook
applications) or desktops with Digital Editions can
download and read eBooks easily. Already in thousands of
retail locations and libraries all over the world, Adobe’s
solution satisfies the needs of publishers, distributors, and
consumers alike.

  • 3. Objectives of the Project •Industry-prepared graduates: Graphics Designers are now being expected to design for hardcopy print but also provide an EPUB component. Our students will need to be able to design for e-reader format by the time they graduate •iFlaneur: discover tangential advantages of ipads in teaching and research: spontaneous video or sound recording device for creative projects, lectures, notetaking, cloud access, accessing online resources, QR code finding, social media engagement etc. •Explore apps for teaching/ and in research Introducing epublication component [ipad/iphones] in traditional bookarts, artists books, and contextual studies.
  • 4. Specific Objectives of the Project Pilot use of ipads/iphones in BDes [Graphics] papers [LK] 1] Elective project 11: Bookbinding for limited edition publications. [20x BDes Graphics students, year 2 ] 2] HCC1– Issues Theory and Formats [21st Century Bookworks]. [137x BDes Graphics students, year 1] Assessed Output – hardcopy bookwork and epublication for iPad/smart phone 3] Creative Process – individual student interests

  • 22. 22 July 2012 update Elective Project starts 26 july 2012 in bindery CANVAS students inspired and enthused by old and new book technologies in bindery [Professor Welby Ings] •This research will be the basis of a paper on combining old and new technologies in tertiary education •Other Graphics staff in the iPad GD CoP latent grant group are doing very interesting ipad initiatives this year, and we form the starting platform of a new Graphics research hub

The Brief has two main components: 1] A sample set of limited editions (x5) in a fold-down box bindings styles demonstrated to select from 2] A prototype for a printed limited edition (to be developed in consultation with the tutor but it is essentially a self- directed project with your own creative content) The context for your project is the Artists’ Books tradition, starting with the Russian Avant-Garde, Fluxus, etc. An epub (optional): The project invites connections between these more historic movements and today’s epublication context.

  • 59. ISSUES to be addressed Capital equipment / investment: •iPads needed.Currently no ipads available in the school for students to book out for trials or exhibition. Funding for equipment needed [Faculty level directives]. Staff unable to get ipad/iphones and support equipment (enclosues, wide screens, kiosks etc.) on IDP funds or Capex (NOTE: capex previously funded class sets of wacom tablets etc. but faculty clampdown leaves those at the teaching interface iPadless) •Wireless networks in some buildings needs significant upgrade
  • 60. Objectives of the Project Designers / Clients / Publishers have their own requirements as they meet the increase in consumer [and market] demand for eBooks. Top among these is a cost-efficient workflow in which they can create books in print and digital formats. Publishers also need to integrate their eBook production with existing systems.   • 61. Objectives of the Project Planning for Future: Majors and Minors •Need for building EPUB and social media components into degree in order to meet changing graduate profile. •Staff with technical computer expertise in epublication are needed to develop the area
  • 62. Objectives of the Project Designers can build on their existing use of InDesign to create EPUB and PDF files and protect and distribute those files with Content Server. Users with devices enabled by the Reader Mobile SDK (over 50 different dedicated e-reader devices and eBook applications) or desktops with Digital Editions can download and read eBooks easily. Already in thousands of retail locations and libraries all over the world, Adobe’s solution satisfies the needs of publishers, distributors, and consumers alike.
