What is Technology? Let’s look at a few definitions and descriptions. Human innovations in action. It involves the generation of knowledge and process to develop systems that solve problems and extend human capabilities. International Technology Education Association, n.d.
Technology is … The general term for the processes by which human beings fashion tools and machines to increase their control and understanding of the material environment. The term is derived from the Greek words “tekhnc”, which refers to an art or craft, and “logia”, meaning an area of study.
Technology is … Literally, the study, or science, of crafting
Technology is … The combination of human imagination, inventiveness, and the electronic and optical tools to transform ideas into reality. Illinois State Board of Education, 1996
The New Technologies include: Multimedia computers, VCRs, cable television, cellular phones, video and still digital cameras, audio devices, microcomputer-based lab equipment, CD-ROMs, satellites, high definition digital television, and telecommunication networks. U.S. Congress, 1996
What is Educational or Instructional Technology? A combination of processes and tools involved in addressing educational needs and problems with an emphasis on applying the newest current tools; this is, computers and their related technologies.
What is Educational or Instructional Technology? Instructional technology applications (software) are resources that are used directly with students to help them learn some information or skills through demonstration, example, explanation, or student tools.
What is Educational or Instructional Technology? The theory and practice of designing, developing, utilizing, managing, and evaluating the processes and resources of learning. A systematic way of designing, carrying out, and evaluating the total process of learning teaching based on research in human and non-human resources to bring about effective instruction.
Instructional Technology Includes: Design Development Utilization Management Evaluation Association of Communication and Technology, 1993
Defining Instructional Technology Design: The process of specifying the conditions for learning. Determining what is needed for learning Development: The process of translating the design specifications into physical form. Creating the unit of instruction and/or resources for instruction
Defining Instructional Technology Utilization: The act of using processes and resources for learning. Using the technology in a lesson or unit of instruction Management: The process controlling the instructional technology, including planning, organizing, coordination, and supervising the use of media. Setting up of hardware and software for use in the lesson or unit of instruction
Defining Instructional Technology Evaluation: The process of determining if learners exhibit the knowledge and/or skills presented in the media and lesson or unit of instruction. Determining if learners exhibit the knowledge and/or skills presented in the media and lesson or unit of instruction
Why Use Instructional Technology in the Classroom?
Personal Computers in Education are: Facilitators of higher-order thinking skills Vehicles for creative expression Facilitators of cooperative learning Able to create multi-sensor learning environments A means of empowering the learner James Lockard and others in Microcomputers for 21 st Century Educators, 3 rd ed.
What Do Teachers Need to Know About Technology? They need to know: 1. How to identify problems and be able to troubleshoot computer systems they use frequently in order to discriminate between problems they can correct and those that will require outside help.
They need to know: 2.How to speak the language of technology sufficiently enough to understand the terms and concepts related to technology so they can exchange information with other teachers, their students, and technicians and ask questions so that they can expand their knowledge. What Do Teachers Need to Know About Technology?
They need to know: 3. How to purchase products: Teachers need to become informed, knowledgeable consumers of computer products, and select wisely from among the available alternatives. What Do Teachers Need to Know About Technology?
They need to: 4. Develop a philosophy or personal perspective on the current and future role of technology in education and in their own classroom. What Do Teachers Need to Know About Technology?
They need to: 5. Understand how technology fits into students’ education based on identified educational needs. Teachers need to be able to identify school activities where technology can help to improve educational opportunities that did not exist without it. M.D. Roblyer and others. Integrating Educational Technology into Teaching What Do Teachers Need to Know About Technology?
What is Technology Integration? The process of teachers deciding what, where, and how technology fits into the curriculum. Gary B Shelly and others. Teachers Discovering Computers: A Link to the Future
What is Technology Integration? It is the process of determining which electronic tools and which methods of teaching are appropriate for a given classroom situation, content area, or instructional problem. M.D. Roblyer and Jack Edwards in Integrating Educational Technology into Teaching, 2 nd ed.
