Introductory Material and
Parenthetical Expressions
Introductory Words

Introductory words are words used at the beginning of a
sentence.
Introductory words help the continuity flow between
sentences.
examples:
The science test was easy. Initially, I was very apprehensive
about the exam.
Keynote presentations are easy to build. First, choose your
theme.
Introductory Phrases
Introductory phrases also set the stage for the main action of
the sentence, but they are not complete clauses. Phrases
don't have both a subject and a verb of their own.
Phrases often act as a separate unit.
examples:

Just the other day, Jane went to the market.
With his own two hands, Austin built a large treehouse.
Skipping happily, Diana went to the park.
Introductory Clauses

Introductory clauses are dependent clauses that provide
background information or quot;set the stagequot; for the main part
of the sentence, the independent clause.
examples:

After receiving their grades, the class realized the
importance of studying their vocabulary terms.
When the snow began to fall, Peter ran outside to catch
snowflakes on his tongue.
Refresher: clauses

A set of words which contain a verb and a subject (the
subject) may be implied.
Dependent vs. Independent
Dependent vs. Independent Clauses

Dependent: A dependent clause is a group of words that
contains a subject and verb but does not express a complete
thought. A dependent clause cannot be a sentence. Often a
dependent clause is marked by a dependent marker word.
Example: When Andy was wondering about his computer
Dependent vs. Independent Clauses

Independent: An independent clause is a group of words
that contains a subject and verb and expresses a complete
thought.
example: Andy was wondering about his computer.
Parenthetical Expressions
A parenthetical expression is an expression which is inserted
into the flow of thought. It lies in the middle of a sentence,
but it does not deal directly with the topic at hand.
It is usually surrounded by commas, but parenthesis and
dashes can also be used
examples:

This puppy, of course, is yours.
Jerry’s score, not yours, was highest in the class.
Sarah’s answer, I believe, was correct.
