This document provides an introduction to research and writing research papers. It discusses defining research as creative and systematic work to increase knowledge. The document outlines key aspects of the research process, including identifying problems, reviewing literature, collecting and analyzing data, and discussing results. It also discusses writing research papers by properly structuring them with an abstract, introduction, literature review, methodology, results, and conclusion sections. Finally, it provides some tips for ensuring quality in research through impact factor, indexing in databases like Scopus and Scimago, and additional learning resources.

Progressive focusing and trustworthiness in qualitative research: The enablin...University of Glasgow
* The business and management community increasingly recognises that qualitative research is a ‘messy’, non-linear and often unpredictable undertaking. Yet, a considerable proportion of the qualitative research published in top journals is still presented as the result of a linear, predictable research process, thus wrongly suggesting deductive reasoning. * In this paper, we focus on a particular type of ‘messiness’ where during fieldwork, the research context is revealed to be more complex than anticipated, forcing the researcher to gradually refine/shift their focus to reflect ‘what really matters’. We adopt Stake’s notion of progressive focusing for this gradual approach. * Progressive focusing is well-suited to qualitative research in international business requiring complex iteration between theory and data, and the truthful yet coherent presentation of the research process. We propose that this dual challenge of complexity and trustworthiness may be addressed by using computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS). * We present conceptual considerations and guidelines and offer a view on a ‘messy’, non-linear doctoral research project conducted using a progressive focusing approach, to demonstrate how CAQDAS can help to develop and re-negotiate insights from theory and interview data, as well as enhance trustworthiness, transparency and publication potential.

Use and Misuse of Bibliometric Measures for Assessment of Academic Performanc...Yasar Tonta
Bibliometric methods such as journal impact factor and article influence score based on the number of citations were developed to measure and compare the quality of journals listed in citation indexes. Yet, they are increasingly being used nowadays for research assessment, hiring, tenure and academic promotion, research funding and publication support even though such metrics have not been developed to measure the quality of individual researchers or scientific articles. In this paper, we review the use of journal impact factor, cited half-life, article influence score and h index for academic performance assessment, academic promotion and publication support by Turkish universities and the Turkish Scientific and Technological Research Center (TUBITAK). Examples are provided regarding the consequences of using bibliometric measures beyond what they were originally designed for, and some recommendations are offered.

10 SIMPLE STEPS TO BUILDING A REPUTATION AS A RESEARCHER, IN YOUR EARLY CAREERMicah Altman
A talk sponsored by the MIT Postdoctoral Association with support from the Office of the Vice President for Research.
In the rapidly changing world of research and scholarly communications researchers are faced with a rapidly growing range of options to publicly disseminate, review, and discuss research—options which will affect their long-term reputation. Junior scholars must be especially thoughtful in choosing how much effort to invest in dissemination and communication, and what strategies to use.
In this talk, I briefly discuss a number of review of bibliometric and scientometric studies of quantitative research impact, a sampling of influential qualitative writings advising this area, and an environmental scan of emerging researcher profile systems. Based on this review, and on professional experience on dozens of review panels, I suggest some steps junior researchers may consider when disseminating their research and participating in public review and discussion.

Aligning Learning Analytics with Classroom Practices & NeedsSimon Knight
The Learning Analytics Research Network (LEARN) invites you to join us for a talk about the exciting ways in which the University of Technology Sydney is using participatory design to augment existing classroom practices with learning analytics. Simon Knight, a LEARN Visiting Scholar from the University of Technology Sydney, will introduce a variety of projects, including their work developing analytics to support student writing.
Come meet others at NYU interested in learning analytics while learning from the examples of leading work in Australia. A light lunch will be served and the talk will be followed by a short Q&A. RSVP is required.
About Simon Knight
Simon Knight is a lecturer at the University of Technology Sydney in the Faculty of Transdisciplinary Innovation. His research investigates how people find and evaluate evidence, particularly in the context of learning and educator practices. Dr Knight received his Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Psychology from the University of Leeds before completing a teacher education program and Philosophy of Education MA at the UCL Institute of Education. Following teaching high school social sciences, Dr Knight completed an MPhil in Educational Research Methods at Cambridge, and PhD in Learning Analytics at the UK Open University.
About Simon’s Talk
How do we make use of data about our students to support their learning, and where does learning analytics fit into that? Educators are increasingly asked to work with data and technologies such as learning analytics to support and provide evidence of student learning. However, what learning analytics developers should design for, and how educators will implement analytics, is unclear. Learning analytics risks the same levels of low uptake and implementation as many other educational technologies if they do not align with educator practice and needs. How then do we tackle this gap, to support and develop technologies that are implemented in practice, for impact on learning?
At the University of Technology Sydney, we have taken a participatory design based approach to designing and implementing learning analytics in practice, and understanding their impact. In our work we have identified existing practices with which learning analytics may be aligned to augment them. This talk introduces some of these projects, particularly drawing on our work in developing analytics to support student writing (writing analytics), giving examples of how analytics were aligned with existing pedagogic practices to support learning. Through this augmentation, supported by design-based approaches, we argue we can develop research and practice in tandem.
