This document introduces Broadband Remote Access Server (B-RAS), which facilitates convergence of multiple internet traffic sources like cable, DSL, Ethernet, and broadband wireless. It routes traffic to and from broadband remote access devices. The B-RAS sits at the core of an ISP's network and aggregates user sessions from the access network. It provides benefits like being a single point of change control and using a common operational model independent of the access network technology. Key functions of B-RAS include aggregating circuits, providing layer 2 connectivity, enforcing QoS policies, and routing IP traffic through the ISP's backbone network.

server based at an ISP network that facilitates
the convergence of multiple Internet traffic
sources.
— (These sources include cable, DSL, Ethernet or
broadband wireless)
— It routes traffic to and from broadband remote access
devices, including DSL access multiplexers and the
ISP's network.

[So far as I am aware of and lazy to research Redback
Networks is a company which provide powerful BRAS/BNG
(SmartEdge service gateway). This company was acquired by
Ericsson in December,2006]

— They provide a single point for change control
— B-RAS is a common, access-agnostic operational
model
— It is multiservice access node (MSAN) independent
<If network changes are required, it’s better to make
changes at a single B-RAS server than at dozens of
devices.
☻Sometimes we do not need to have WHY to everything. It is
just something has to be used!
