Talk given by Giles Sirett of ShapeBlue at Linux Cloudopen >Apache CloudStack is open source software designed to deploy and manage large networks of virtual machines, as a highly available, highly scalable Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) cloud computing platform. In this talk, Giles will give an introduction to the technology, its history and its architecture. He will look common use-cases (and some real production deployments) that he sees across both public and private cloud infrastructures and where CloudStack can be completed by other open source technologies. Giles will also compare and contrast Apache Cloudstack with other IaaS platforms and why he thinks that the technology, combined with the Apache governance model will see CloudStack become the de-facto open source cloud platform. He will run a live demo of the software and talk about ways that people can get involved in the Apache CloudStack project

No matter which provider you choose, you'll find that almost every cloud has these core characteristics: It's virtual Imagine racks of servers, humming along in a data center. Together, these servers become a massive pool of resources. Divide this "pool" into multiple virtual servers, and you create a "cloud." It can be affordable You'll get the greatest cost savings in the public cloud, where your virtual servers run on physical servers that you share with other customers. It's open (or closed) In the open cloud, you can easily move your cloud around—without being locked into one provider or a closed, proprietary technology. It can be secure and affordable A hybrid cloud gives you the benefits of both public and private clouds. For example, you can put public-facing components in a public cloud, while storing customer-sensitive data in a private cloud.The “cloud” in cloud computing can be defined as the set of hardware, networks, storage, services, and interfaces that combine to deliver aspects of computing as a service. Cloud services include the delivery of software, infrastructure, and storage over the Internet (either as separate components or a complete platform) based on user demand.Cloud computing has four essential characteristics: elasticity and the ability to scale up and down, self-service provisioning and automatic deprovisioning, application programming interfaces (APIs), billing and metering of service usage in a pay-as-you-go model.The world of the cloud has lots of participants: • The end user who doesn’t have to know anything about the underlying technology. • Business management who needs to take responsibility for the governance of data or services living in a cloud. In cloud computing environments, VMs require fast access to resources like storage and networking. The hardware that the VMs access is implemented in software and/or by passing through a dedicated hardware device. Software-based solutions consume extra CPU cycles, thus resulting in poor performance. Also, these require to expose a device-model to the guest, thus increasing the attack surface. Conversely, hardware passthrough provides better performance and security but can be expensive in terms of the number of physical resources, since each device is dedicated to a single VM. This talk focuses on how Vates is working on sharing hardware resources among VMs by relying on dedicated processors named Data Processing Units (DPU). More precisely, Vates work on offloading Xen hypervisor of storage emulation by relying on Kalray K200 DPU PCIe controllers, a hardware accelerator based on MPPA architecture. ----------------------------------------- The CloudStack Collaboration Conference 2023 took place on 23-24th November.
