A Web for Everyone: Accessibility as a design challengeWhitney Quesenbery
Let's get past the idea that checklists and compliance all there is to accessibility. Designing for accessibility is a user experience design problem, starting with understanding how people with disabilities use your products. If we aim to design for all senses we can focus on easy interaction, helpful wayfinding, clean presentation, plain language and media instead of "rules." Doing so, we can create a web for everyone and a delightful user experience where accessibility and usability work together.

Accessibility and the importance of user testingRuss Weakley
Is user testing more important than following WAI guidelines? A discussion on user testing and aspects of web development such as accessible forms, tables, skip links, source order and structural labels.
With increased complaints and legal action for organisations of inaccessible websites (Coles, Peapod) and apps (Westpac), now is the time for all web and app Project Managers, Developers, UX/Designers, Content Producers, Business Analysts and Testers to be ‘baking in’ accessibility into processes and work practices.
This presentation will show that accessibility is everyone’s responsibility and it is not difficult to get started or find resources that will help you and your team produce a website, app or digital presence that works for everyone!
This presentation will help you understand:
- The legal requirements behind Web Accessibility
- How do people with disabilities use the web and what assistive technologies they use
- How good usability makes up for better accessibility and improves site’ SEO
- Financial benefits of having an accessible website

Who Should Be Involved in Your Campus' IT InitiativePatrick Loftus
When it comes to accessibility on your campus, whose responsibility is it to establish and uphold an accessibility initiative?
On-campus accessibility should be a campus-wide, shared responsibility, but it can be daunting to think about where to begin. Over the last five years, Oklahoma ABLE Tech has worked with over 20 institutions across Oklahoma to build an ambitious project focused on accessibility in higher education. They’ve worked to identify the roles and responsibilities of the many departments in a university that touch accessibility.
In this webinar, Rob Carr, the Accessibility Coordinator at Oklahoma ABLE Tech, will present on the various jobs and responsibilities that are required in implementing a well-rounded accessibility program. He'll also provide you with the necessary tools to begin conversations for a campus-wide accessibility initiative.
Topics will include:
Where to begin your journey towards accessibility compliance
Roles and responsibilities required for implementing an accessibility initiative
How to frame the conversation to illustrate the campus-wide necessity for accessibility
Practical tools for Web Accessibility testingToufic Sbeiti

Where UX fails Accessibility : Alastair Campbell Nomensa
Video: https://youtu.be/NrD5MlYcAZ8
UX and accessibility go hand in hand, without a good UX process creating a usable product, no amount of work on accessibility will make it good for people with disabilities.
You can think of UX as optimising for the majority, and accessibility and scaling out an interface for minorities, but where do those aims conflict? There are interfaces being created for “great UX” that are fundamentally inaccessible. Do they need to be?
At each stage of design there are four questions I ask to ensure an interface is accessible. If you can build those into your process, you won’t get blindsided after launch.
Explores web usability and offers approaches to make web sites easy to use for an end-user, without requiring the user to undergo any specialized training. Creating websites that intuitively relate the performance actions needed on the web page to the user’s experience and expectations, the web designer/developer is able to present the information to the user in a clear and concise way, to give the correct choices to the users, in a very obvious way, to remove ambiguity regarding the consequences of an action and put the most important thing in the right place on a web page or a web application.
These slides were used during a workshop on Usability Testing - an intro.
We covered the following topics:
1) What is user experience?
2) Why is usability important
3) How do we evaluate usability?
eLearning and Networking Technologies to Mimic the In-Person Experiencejanetkrenn
Conducting an online graduate-level course poses many technological challenges that aren’t often experienced in e-Learning, which typically involves undergraduate-level students watching slideshow presentations. Not only were the students of Theory and Practice of Collaborative Fisheries Research course expected to view lectures synchronously, they were expected to verbally contribute to discussions in the online classroom, and occasionally present their own lecture. Outside of the classroom, PIs hoped to provide a private social networking space for students to interact with the goal of developing a future cohort of professional researchers interested in working collaboratively with industry. Following a needs and goals assessment, technologies were chosen that resulted in an overall successful solution. This presentation will review the considerations, opportunities, and challenges of conducting an online experience to mimic in-person education and networking.

Strategies for Mobile Web Application TestingTechWell
Mobile web testing is still a widely unexplored territory—with no standardized tools or testing processes—where testers often struggle due to lack of guidance and resources. With mobile devices, tools, operating systems, and web technologies rapidly evolving, testers must adapt their thinking in this quickly changing domain. Raj Subramanian is a tester who went through this experience, trying out different testing approaches including paired exploratory testing, blink tests, and tools to get quick feedback on the web pages. Raj provides a basic foundation for mobile web testing by explaining the mobile ecosystem and device selection strategies. He shares his experiences in testing a mobile web application used by millions of people worldwide. He discusses the lessons learned from testing “responsive web sites”―the idea that every website should render properly for every form factor of a particular device. Finally, Raj shares his vision for the future of mobile web testing.
We can all pretend that we’re helping others by making web sites and software accessible, but we are really making them better for our future selves. Learn some fundamentals of accessibility and how it can benefit you (whether future you from aging or you after something else limits your abilities). We’ll review simple testing techniques, basic features and enhancements, coming trends, and where to get help. This isn’t intended to be a deep dive, but more of an overall primer for those who aren’t sure where to start nor how it helps them.
At UNC Chapel Hill, the User Experience and Assessment department regularly runs usability tests to inform our decision making and prioritize our users’ perspectives as we make changes. But there are more things to test than there are hours in the day. Our projects have a variety of stakeholders who are very interested in improving their services, and we found ourselves with a long list of tests we wanted to run.
To catch up, we adapted Harvard Libraries’ Test Fest model: five tests run simultaneously, with five participants rotating through the set of tests. Over a span of two hours, we completed 25 individual usability tests. In this one event, we caught up on much of our testing backlog.
This session will outline how we planned and executed Test Fest and what we learned from using this approach. We’ll also discuss how we approached analyzing the large amount of qualitative data that was gathered during testing, via affinity diagrams and lots of post-it notes.
The focus of this session is on our methodologies with an aim to include time for attendees to discuss how they would have approached the backlog, setting up Test Fest, and analyzing the data.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
