TO WHAT EXTENT DID THE BATTLE AT THE RIO GRANDE CAUSE THE MEXICAN
AMERICAN WAR?

History Extended Essay
12
Introduction April 25,1846 a Mexican Cavalry consisting of 3,000 men ambushed 70 US soldiers
under Zachary Taylor s command at the disputed area between the Nueces River and the Rio Grande.
Mexican troops ended up killing 16 American Citizens. This led President James K. Polk to write a
letter to Congress asking for a Declaration of War against Mexico on May 11, 1846. In his declaration
of war he included the famous quote: But now, after reiterated menaces, Mexico has passed the
boundary of the United States, has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon the American
soil. She has proclaimed that hostilities have commenced, and that the two nations are now at war.
Congress approved the Declaration of War after only a few hours of debate, and so on May 13, 1846
the United States of America declared war on Mexico.
Though it seems like the main reason for the Mexican American war was the shooting between
American troops and a Mexican cavalry because of the fact that James K. Polk asked Congress for
permission to declare war on Mexico right after the incident and the event was very prevalent in the
letter, another reason for the Mexican American War may have been the popular ideology of Manifest
Destiny. In 1845 John L. O Sullivan coined the term Manifest Destiny. Manifest Destiny was the
ideology

Pluto as a Dwarf Planet
By definition from a Merriam Webster Dictionary a planet is any of the large bodies that revolve
around the sun in the solar system which have a similar body to them . This is not a very specific
explanation and makes it hard to fully grasp what it means; at this you could easily say that in fact
Pluto a planet. However if you look at a scientific encyclopedia the definition is much different and
more specific. The Access Science Encyclopedia says a planet is A) a celestial body that is in orbit
around the sun B) has sufficient mass for its self gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it can
assume a hydrostatic equilibrium shape C) clears the neighborhood around its orbit . This explanation
is much different and clearer about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The International Astronomical Union decided that Pluto was too small to be a planet and created a
new category to put it in, dwarf planets. Dwarf Planets are classified as A) a celestial body that is in
orbit around the sun, B) has sufficient mass for it self gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that is
assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, C) has not cleared the neighbourhood around
its orbit, and D) is not a satellite . The criteria for both planets and dwarf planets are very similar,
though planets must be able to clear the neighbourhood around its orbit. This basically means that a
planet must be able to complete a rotation around the sun without interfering with another planets
orbit. Pluto is very close to Neptune so they had a chance to collide into each other. If you look at a
visual it is clear that there orbital rotation paths intersect with each other at two locations. This is
another reason why Pluto is no longer considered a planet. As of 2006 dwarf planet was a new
category and a new thing for astronomers. By definition it is simply just a planet except that it cannot
complete a neighbourhood orbit around the sun. After planets were put into this grouping was noticed
that all of these planets were much smaller in size and significantly farther away from the sun and the
rest of the planets. All of the dwarf planets still orbit the sun however; it is just at a further distance.

Sustainable Development Of Green Logistics
Based on sustainable development of green logistics in China and the countermeasures (2007), China
is especially vulnerable to climate change due to its complex climatic conditions, a fragile ecological
environment, a massive population and frequent natural disasters. Insufficient per ca pita resources
and very sharp contradictions between development and environment force China to further develop a
cycling economy. Green logistics is an important tool for sustainable development.
However, logistics in China is in its infant period. Hence, there are some problems, for example,
immediate economic benefits to the enterprise and ecological and social benefits faced, which results
in negative environmental issues in China. It is worth noting that there is a need for the sustainable
logistics system inhibiting cause harmful to the environment while forming a modern logistics system
that can promote economic. There must be a combination of sustainable development and logistics
applying the principles of sustainability in green logistics. Nevertheless, there are still many people
who are not aware of green logistics and even suspect the necessity of establishment of green logistics.
This essay aims to introduce the basic theory of green logistics in China, analysis of the development
situation of green logistics in China, countermeasures, suggestions for implementation of green
logistics in China as well as the future of Chinese enterprise s logistics development in charting a

The Importance Of Plagiarism In Writing
Choices Plagiarism is when you take any form of writing and make it your own without giving proper
credit to the owner. You can also be plagiarizing if you use some of your old work without the teacher
knowing you did so. In universities across America about ¾ of people are involved in some kind of
academic dishonesty (Heckler, Rice, and Bryan 229). Many students have different reasons as to why
they had to cheat on an assignment and they range from not having enough time, not getting the
sufficient information from the teacher or for the assignment, and sometimes some students also say
that the teacher almost gives them no choice (Puka). RO In The Words [Be sure this text is properly
titled in your writing] the main character is struck with an important realization; that his writing will
never be as good as the owner of the manuscript he found. In a simple confusion between him and his
wife he makes a split moments decision and decides that he will take ownership of the manuscript. His
wife pushes him to show it to someone and he ends up giving it to a publisher. Months pass by since
he has given it and he almost forgets about it until the publisher comes back and tells him he loves the
book and he wants to publish it. Years pass by and the man is now very well known author and has
made a name and money off of someone else s manuscript and no one but he knows what he has done.
One day this old man confronts him about what he has done and the man starts feeling guilty

Miller s Seventh Day Advent Church
The Seventh day Advent Church is a movement within Christianity that begun in the early 1800s. The
movement emerged from the larger Millerite movement. William Miller, a Baptist convert, coined the
interpretation of the prophecies concerning Christ s Second Advent. Miller used different Bible
principles in the interpretation of the prophecy. Based on his final analysis, the Second Advent was to
take place on 22nd October 1844. Miller preached the message across the U.S. and many converts
gave their lives to Christ. Those who subscribed to his teachings formed the Millerite Movement.
However, Jesus did not come on the appointed date. More 10,000 believers who had accepted to the
teaching were bitterly disappointed (the great disappointment).

Body Image Of Women
Body image pertains to judgement about themselves or about their body perspective. But, what do you
expect when the media is covered in pictures of perfect models and celebrities? Women s self esteem
is lowering because they look at these women in comparison to themselves and they do not like the
difference between the two, which leads them to belief that they need to change themselves. The
media has gotten way out of hand with body image, and not in a good way. Women believe that the
thinner person is widely accepted, but not too small of course because then you will be thought to
have an eating disorder, leading to insecurities. Women feel like in order to post a picture to the media
they have to look perfect in it because they are insecure ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Models can get a bunch of things worked on to make them appear to be perfect. They can get surgeries
that can fix any flaws that they have. If they hate something about themselves they can pay someone
to fix their flaws. They can get their body parts fixed and they can change anything and they can
improve their perspective of themselves. Magazines can also photoshop and edit pictures to make
people look better than they actually look. They can change what their hair looks like, what their eyes
look like, and their teeth too. They can change heir body shape to make their body figure look better.
Women do not realize that people can change a picture pretty fast and make them look like someone
different. They can edit their photos but they cant always change what their make up and hair color
and everything else looks like because all of the good apps cost a lot of money and require brains and
style to be able to function the app. Women want to be compared to women in a model status and one
day wish they could look like them but if someone as myself could learn how to photoshop pictures
then I would show women that I could change them as fast as other people can change those models
that they look up too. Women body image has horrible out looks on women. It gives them insecurities
and believes that they need to be someone else that they clearly are not but they think they needed to
be that person

Nursing Career Research Paper
Nursing is considered to be one of the most respected professions today. The theory of nursing has
existed for centuries, as family members cared for sick loved ones. However, it was not until the 19th
century that nursing as a profession began to develop. It was during this time that Florence
Nightingale made her significant contributions to nursing. Among other things, Nightingale helped
society recognize nursing as a respectable occupation, established modern nursing education, and
helped institute standards of nursing care (Taylor 7). Nursing is a very broad discipline, and nurses
serve many different roles caregiver, teacher, advocate, communicator, counselor, and many more. In

health, I enjoy caring for patients who are sick, as well as their families, who are also going through a

teaching and greatly enjoy the patient education side of nursing. A very large part of nursing, which
many people do not realize, is patient education. Patients, and their families if needed, should
understand not only the what but also the why behind their illness, medications, and treatments. If they
understand why certain things are happening to them, medications are being prescribed, and
treatments are being initiated, they will feel less anxious and alone and will be more likely to comply
with their treatment regimen. Hopefully, this will ultimately speed their recovery and improve their

Soccer Descriptive Speech
The crowd is stomping their feet chanting USA! USA! , trying to make as much noise as they can
despite their gloved hands and frozen feet. The entire stadium is shaking as the fans show their
support for our goalie who just laid out for a stunning save. As we settle back into our seats, wrapping
blankets back around our shoulders, I hear from behind me, God is helping out between those poles
tonight. Yeah, he must be a U.S. Women s fan too cuz Lord knows the men s team is terrible. This
come from two middle aged women decked out in U.S. Soccer gear sitting a row behind me. The
group of people around them chuckle after hearing this exchange. It s just a fact around here: the
women play better. Just three months later I walk into Jordan Field, home of the Boston Breakers, a
professional women s soccer team and as we walk towards the stands one of my friends jokes that
even our high school has a better stadium than this. The sun is beating down on me, I squint up at the
stands noticing how empty they are despite the small number of seats. Once the game starts it s clear
that the fans here are just as enthusiastic as U.S. Women s National Team (USWNT) fans, there just
happens to be a lot less of them. I began to wonder how is it that 26,500 people are willing to stand in
the freezing cold to support the USWNT, but a professional women s soccer league that runs in the
middle of the summer only averages about 6,610 fans per game ( U.S. WNT vs. England 1, 2017

How The Military Changed My Life
Before I joined the military I was a reckless teenager who had no direction in life. Growing up in the
slums of New York City my days consisted of stealing anything I could get my hands on, smoking
weed, drinking and hanging out with my friends until the early hours of the night. My sense of
accomplishment and achievement came from the fact I graduated high school. I cared for only myself
and I wasn t dedicated to anything that didn t work in my favor. That all changed the day I enlisted in
the United States Navy. Since that very first day of boot camp the military has had a positive effect on
my life and changed me in so many ways.
One change the military has had on me was living with discomfort. Living at home with my mother, I
had all the comforts in the world. Air conditioning, a comfy bed, whatever food I wanted was right
around the corner and privacy. Life in the military is quite rough, especially on a naval vessel.

Bystanders In Bullying
Alternatives
However, teachers are not the only ones helping the victims. Several research studies have looked at
the role of bystanders in bullying students. Teachers and students who witness bullying can work
together to reduce bullying in schools and classrooms. But there is also evidence that those who were
bystanders were not willing to help the victims (Espelage, Green, Polanin, 2012). Students often do
not support victims when there are multiple witnesses (Salmicalli, 2010). Students expect someone
else to intervene or ignore the victim or may consider the bullying to be a joke ( Terasahjo Salmivalli,
2003). Consequently, bullied victims feel that they are not only suffering pain from being bullied, but
also from being ignored by peers (Salmavalli Poskirparta, 2012). ... Show more content on

The Donner Party Analysis
Ordeal by Hunger: The Story of The Donner Party Ordeal by Hunger is a true story that shows the
struggles that the Donner Party had to go through trying to reach California. They were just one of
many wagon trains that were migrating to California. Some of the migrants were trying to find a better
life, and get rich. Others were already rich, but wanted a nice place to stay at. Many people had heard
how great California was. They migrated by wagons pulled by oxen, and traveled about 30 miles per
day. This trip was long, it was suppose to take a couple of months to reach their destination of
California, but along the way they met some difficulties. They tried to take a shortcut, but it resulted in
a longer route. They faced hunger, thirst, and fatigue. Many didn t make it, but those that did faced

Paganism In Beowulf
¬By definition, a Pagan is a person who has religious beliefs other than those of the main world
religion. The epic poem Beowulf was passed down verbally from generation to generation with
enlightening Pagan teachings and elements. Christian elements were not included in the poem until a
Christian monk added them when it was put as written text. However, the Christian aspects collide
with the Pagan elements found in the poem. Beowulf was originally told with only Pagan elements. In
the article The Essential Pagan Elements in Beowulf , it explains Pagan elements included in the story
such as dragons and magic. We do not hear anything about saints, angels, or any particular dogmatic
points (Moorman). In the Pagan religion when a hero or important ... Show more content on

Things such as magic, unnatural creatures, and strange scenarios play a huge role in their faith.
However, Christians believe that things such as dragons, witches, magic and the dark arts are of Satan.
While the Pagans view the dragon as a fire breathing, greedy creature keeping treasure in its lair, the
Christians view it as the devil making the setting of hell. The equivalent of Beowulf in the Christian
faith would be Jesus Christ. He came into the world (lair) and freed us from sins (hell). Pagans view
Beowulf as having superhuman powers that let him overcome any trial he may face. For example of
Beowulf s strength, he lifted the giant s magical sword when nobody else could. His strength is
matched by Christian faith with the story of Jesus was resurrected and came out from the tomb he was
buried in. Beowulf fought for peace in the land of Geatland and Danes. Christ made peace with
everyone. They both share qualities of the desire for peace. The biggest comparison between Beowulf
and Jesus Christ is when they both died to save other people. According to Christian belief, Christ was
crucified to save everyone from death. Beowulf was killed by the dragon in order to save someone
else and to calm his soul from the loss of his village. Christ also found his true followers when he was
carrying the cross and they came to help him. Just like in Beowulf how Wiglaf is Beowulf s
companion because he fights by his side through thick and thin.

sometimes really hard to believe that the laptops, tablets, smartphones and touchpads that we use
today are descendants of the supercomputer that once used to occupy the whole room. During a press

bringing much more new valuable stuff, there echoed a voice, more or less a chaos, You have

memory to store our data which we can t afford to lose. In the past days, computers used to store data

through internal research, and (2) developing partnerships with smaller biotechnology companies.

Merck should take this into consideration in its decision making and negotiation with LAB.
Recommendation Based on our analysis, the value of this license is $13.98 million so we recommend
that Merck agrees to accept the agreement but for a bid price up to that amount. We also suggest that
Merck consider another option, which is to eliminate the license fee ($5 million, $2.5 million and $10
$40 million in Phase I, II and III respectively) and instead, pay Merck a royalty fee on any sales of the
drug. Under the current agreement, Merck bears all the risk while LAB bears none. Even if the drug
fails FDA approval, Merck would still need to pay an expected $9.8 billion in licensing fees to LAB in
addition to all the costs for FDA testing. Instead, Merck should consider removing all licensing fees
and only offer a royalty. This way, both LAB and Merck would have a strong incentive to seeing that
the drug passes FDA testing. In that case, Merck should offer a royalty of 9.03% to LAB, which will
give LAB an expected $9.8m in royalty. Without the licensing fee, Merck can offer up to 21% royalty
fee (Appendix 4). The sensitivity analysis in Appendix 4 provides a benchmark for Merck to negotiate
with LAB (no higher royalty fee than 21% without licensing and maximum of 12% with the licensing
fee of $9.8m as in the current situation). This will be a win win solution for

What Causes Severe Head Injury
Head injury is the most common cause for blindness, depending on how mild or severe the head injury
is. A severe head injury can cause abnormal eye movement and inability to focus the eyes. Eye and
vision problems are common after a brain injury, and some vision problems can be due to trauma to
the eye (Everyday Health). A blow to the head can cause vitreous hemorrhage, which is when blood
vessels in the eye bleed into the vitreous humor. Most vitreous hemorrhages clear up, but in some
cases people are left with vision problems (Everyday Health). Glaucoma is several eye conditions that
can damage to your optic nerve. Increased pressure in the eye can cause glaucoma, which leads to
vision loss or blindness (Healthline). There are five different types of glaucoma, which are open angle
(chronic) glaucoma, angle closure (acute) glaucoma, congenital glaucoma, secondary glaucoma, and
normal tension glaucoma (Healthline). Open angle (chronic) glaucoma is the most common type of
glaucoma, and there are no signs or symptoms expect gradual vision loss (Healthline). People that
over sixty years old are at risk for glaucoma, and African Americans risk starts at forty years old.

tear in the retina, and fluid gets behind the retina and separates it from the back of the eye (Health).
Extreme nearsightedness can cause more strain on the eye and lead to a retina detachment. Retinal

Rhetorical Analysis Of The 13th
Wherever we go, whether it be the grocery store, the mall, or even the couch, people are constantly
bombarded by the elements of persuasion. For example, when buying a carton of milk, the advertisers
will entice buyers with statistics and a list of healthy ingredients. Or while flipping through a
magazine at the dentist s office, marketers draw the eyes in with bright colors and bold text. These
elements of persuasion, rooted both in visual and logical appeals, can also be woven together to create
an argumentative documentary. These documentaries, especially when considering controversial
issues, have the power to broadcast important social messages to the world. This ability, however, can
only be unlocked when the right rhetorical means are used to further their argument. The 13th, a
documentary directed by Ava DuVernay, is a prime example of this. Released in October of 2016, this
oscar nominated film made an immediate impact due to its provoking message on the mass
criminalization of African Americans in the United States, skilfully exploring the disproportionate
amount of African Americans in prison. The success of this documentary can be attributed to its
persuasive visual and audio tracks and its well timed arrival, ultimately influencing the viewer s
passion to create a change in the world. To begin, the various visual components that make up any
documentary are crucial to its intrigue and its overall effectiveness. What the 13th does well is

Karl Marx And The History Of Marxism
Chapter 1: In this chapter I m going to explain a brief introduction to Karl Marx and the history of
Marxism. Karl Marx, who was a German philosopher, economist, sociologist, journalist and
revolutionary socialist created the theory of Marxism. Marx was born in Trier, Germany in 1818 and
died in London in 1883. The social struggles in Marxs family were apparent before he was even born,
ancestrally Jewish, he came from a long line rabbis on both sides of his family. His father, who was a
lawyer converted to the Protestant denomination of Lutheranism, which was the predominant sect in
Germany and Prussia at the time, in order to escape the constraints of Pre Nazi anti Semitic
legislation. Marx started Trier High School in 1830, after having been home schooled by his father.
The headmaster Hugo Wyttenbach, who was a friend of his fathers, employed many liberal humanists
as teachers which the conservative government at the time strongly opposed leading to the police
raiding the school in 1832, discovering literature supporting political liberalism had been distributed
amongst the students. This being considered as such a heinous crime the authorities took it upon
themselves to institute reforms and replaced several members of staff during Marx s attendance at the
school. Marx attended the University of Bonn in 1835, aged 17, wanting to study philosophy; his
father disagreed with this and believed that law would be a more appropriate field of study. In his time

Answer 1.
As described in the question store summarized this data into single score by multiplying the number of
responses by number assigned. With this procedure, they got mean value of 3.19. Which lies between
the 3 unsure and 4 agree.
With which store manager will conclude that response is mild agreement or small unsure.
This is not correct interpretation of data. As this argument relies on assumption that psychological
distance between agreement and strong agreement is same as in agreement and unsure. Which is not
correct as the responses can also be distorted on psychological attitudes. To put it in simple terms

a). Gender Requires one of two responses male or female
From this question, we will get Nominal data. Because it has two possible values male or female. We
can count no. of males and females but both doesn t have their actual values neither we can compare
them to each other i.e. we can t say that male has higher value than female. But we can say no. of
males are less than or greater than no. of females.
b. Fahrenheit thermometers
Collects values representing temperatures in Fahrenheit
Collected values representing temperatures in Fahrenheit(F) is an Interval Data. As in the terms of
temperature there is fixed interval. As difference between 1F and 3F is same as in 22F and 24F.
However, we cannot say that 5F is half than 10F because there is no absolute zero in temperature.
Temperature can increase to infinity as well as decrease to infinity in Fahrenheit.
c. Kelvin thermometers Collects values representing temperatures in Kelvin
Collected values representing temperature in kelvin(k) is a Ratio Data. Because in terms of kelvin
temperature there is fixed intervals and as well as absolute zero. As there is absolute zero in kelvin
temperature we can say that 5 degrees is half hot as compared to 10 degrees.
d. The number of items a customer buys
In whole numbers
It is also a ratio Data because there can be a customer buying no item. So, there can be an absolute
zero. Moreover, we can also say that 5 items are half of 10

Reality Tv Social Aspects
Madi Fisher
Media and Society
Paper 1
Social Aspect of Television
Socialization is a fundamental aspect in the life of relatively every human. In the absence of having
the ability or strength to interact socially, we tend to steer away from social norms and isolate
ourselves. One may consider that watching television correlates with the effects of anti socialization
although, one may argue that is not the case. Television is a form of socialization that provides
common ground for people to bond over, allows those lacking a social life to create their own social
word, and provides an environment for conversation.
Taking a look at our society today, television is a dominant way in which humans bond and interact
with one another. According to Susan J. Douglas, Reality TV came to replace, in particular, the lineup
of TV news magazines that had dominated various network schedules in the 1990s. (p. 632). Having a
wider array of reality television gives viewers an immense relationship or connection with the
characters. Douglas then states, ...The structure of the show invites us to empathize with them, judge
them, or both. (p. 633). In this specific quote Douglas is referring to them as the characters in the
reality television shows. Considering we empathize or judge these characters, it gives us a ... Show

The Caribbean’s Cultural History Essay
The Caribbean s Cultural History Columbus discovery in 1492 set off a chain of events in the
emergence of the Caribbean society, as Knight states in his book The Caribbean.
The first voyage of Columbus in 1492 fortuitously discovered a whole new world and set in motion a
chain of events whose profound consequences gave new directions to the histories of Europe, Africa,
the Americas, and Asia. It was the voyages of Columbus and those who followed him that brought the
Americas into the consciousness of the Europeans (Knight 28).

The plantations were an important aspect of the cultural history of the Caribbean. Mintz strongly
believed that the plantations helped to shape each colony into what it is now. He suggests that
plantations were a way to tie the island to the country that was colonizing it as he states that:
the plantation system was an agricultural design for the production of export commodities for foreign
markets a means for introducing agricultural capitalism to subtropical colonial areas, and for
integrating those areas with the expanding European economy (Mintz 26).
The plantations could also be very useful in leaning more about the history of the people of the island,
as Benitez Rojo states in his essay, From the Plantation to the Plantation. He states that:
the plantations serve as a telescope for observing the changes and the continuities of the Caribbean
galaxy through the lenses of multifold disciplines, namely economics, history, sociology, political
science, anthropology, ethnology, demography, as well as through innumerable practices, which range
from the commercial to the military, from the religious literary (Benitiz Rojo 38).
He suggests that the history of the Caribbean and its people is confusing and somewhat jumbled, and
feels that the study of the history of each plantation would help to organize the history of the
Caribbean.

Essay on Voter Habits Based on Demographics
Voter Habits Based on Demographics
Abstract
In this paper I intend to evaluate the voting habits of the American public. I will look at how race, sex,
education level, marital status, income level, current employment status, and age affects whether or
not people vote. I am also going to examine which political parties these groups have historically
voted for, why they vote for them, how this has changed over the years if it has changed at all, and
why it has changed.
I believe that from previous voting information you could fairly well predict the voters choices. I m
not saying you could foretell the outcome of upcoming elections, but you could figure out what to
expect given the state of current affairs.

This difference is made up of people who do not have United States citizenship. This is important for
the consideration of racial and ethnic differences in voting rates. Immigration has affected the non
citizen population of many groups. Only two percent of Non Hispanic whites are not citizens and six
percent of Blacks are not citizens. This is in stark contrast to the thirty eight percent of Hispanics and
thirty eight percent of Asians and Pacific Islanders who do not have citizenship. This can be seen in
the nineteen percent of voting age Hispanics, Asians and Pacific Islanders who voted compared to the
thirty percent of the voting age citizen population who voted. This is illustrated well in the following
graph.
The overall percentage of 18 and over citizens who voted in the 2002 congressional election was at the
second lowest with the 1998 election being the lowest. There has been an increase in the overall
number of people eligible to vote, but a decrease in the percentage that register to vote and the
percentage of registered voters that do. I believe this comes from an increase in the sensationalism of
the presidential elections that over shadows the congressional elections. The hype and prominence isn
t present so it tends to slide by unnoticed. You can see this in the average difference of thirteen percent
more voters in presidential elections since 1964. The people who do vote in these elections are the

The Learning And Use Of The Foreign Language
Nigeria s geographical position where she is surrounded by francophone neighbors such as Chad,
Republic du Benin and Cameroon calls for a functional knowledge of French. With the knowledge of
French, Nigeria and her Francophone neighbors would be able to work together locally and
internationally. This however can only be achieved if there is communicative proficiency on the part
of the citizens. Without this, Nigeria will be linguistically, politically, educationally and socially
isolated from her francophone neighbors. This realization informed certain provisions guiding
language study in Nigeria education system.
The learning and use of the foreign language is not only peculiar to Nigeria. It is a worldwide
phenomenon. Early bilingual education was advocated by the Renaissance humanists but in more
recent times, international organizations are reiterating that position and giving it a broader
application. In 1993, a forum of United Nation s Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO) experts hoping to build a world that will be rid of many conflicts tearing it apart proposed
that the education of the young people must include exposure to plurality of languages. Learning to
communicate in a foreign language has long been recognized as an essential ingredient of a liberal
education. Furthermore, in this age of globalization and interdependence that the world is becoming a
smaller place and that more and more people are moving around the globe for work and

Sacrifice In Julia Alvarez s In The Time Of The Butterflies
A Call to Sacrifice
Julia Alvarez s In the Time of the Butterflies, fictionalizes the real life story of the four Mirabal sisters:
Patria, Maria Teresa, Minerva, and Dedé. Dominican dictator, Trujillo, has Patria, Minerva, and Maria
Teresa killed for their participation in the revolution. Though not all of the sisters gave their life, each
of them sacrificed a great deal. Throughout the novel, all four sisters heard the call to motherhood.
This call to motherhood is not the only call heard by the Mirabal sisters, however, along with this call
to motherhood, each sister is also called to sacrifice. For each sister, this call to sacrifice is answered
in a different way.
Early in her life, Dedé s father predicts that she will be a survivor: She ll bury us all, her father adds,
laughing, in silk and pearls (Alvarez, 8). In jest, Dedé s father foreshadows the ultimate result of Dedé

what keeps her from joining the revolution, and what ultimately saves her life. That is not to say that it

What Is The Theme Of Survival In The Road By Cormac Mccarthy
The ability to paint beautiful ideas on a canvas of dark events and imagery is an essential skill in the
arsenal of an accomplished writer. In his novel The Road, Cormac McCarthy demonstrates his
understanding of this skill. A reviewer from the San Francisco Chronicle described The Road saying,
[McCarthy s] tale of survival and the miracle of goodness only adds to McCarthy s stature as a living
master. It s gripping, frightening, and, ultimately, beautiful. These descriptions of the tale are true
throughout the novel, but particularly at the ending of the story. In the final pages of the book,
McCarthy continues to engage the reader with gripping and frightening moments, to emphasize the
theme of survival, and to reveal beauty and the miracle of goodness.
Throughout the novel, survival is a constant objective for the boy and his father. McCarthy s gripping
and frightening moments are most obviously interwoven with this theme. Soon after the death of his
father the boy looks up and sees that someone was coming. He started to turn and go back into the
woods but he didnt. He just stood in the road and waited, the pistol in his hand (McCarthy 281). With
the approach of this new potential threat, the boy s safety and survival are brought into question. As
the strange man comes near, a tension builds while the boy tries to make a decision that could quite
possibly affect the rest of his life. The tension dissipates when it is revealed that the man is not a

Leadership Challenge, by Kouzes and Posner Essay
In the Leadership Challenge, 4th edition, it is Kouzes Posner (2007) intention to present a road map
for individuals to follow on their leadership journey. The authors stress that leadership is not a gene
and it s not an inheritance. Leadership they assert is an identifiable set of skills and abilities that are
available to all of us (p. 23). They make clear that the great person theory of leadership is plain wrong.
Leaders are our everyday heroes who do extraordinary things on a regular basis (p. 23).
Empirically based, the writers begin the book by offering five practices of exemplary leadership:
Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act and Encourage
the Heart (p. 14). In their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They have to enlist others in a common vision (p. 17). The challenge, Kouzes Posner says is to turn
the idea into an inspired vision (p.106). The leader needs to imagine the possibilities and find a
common purpose. The authors refer to James MacGregory Burns transformational leadership theory
asserting that people commit to causes, not plans (p. 122). In order to have a transforming effect, the
leader must raise the level of human conduct and ethical aspiration of both the leader and follower.
Just like Kotter (1990) outlines the methods to change an organizational culture is by telling stories,
using symbols, the designing of physical space, using jargon, rituals, etc., Kouzes Posner suggest the
same thing when they explain the power in using symbolic language to communicate a shared identify
and give life to a vision (p. 143). When challenging the process, leaders know that in order to bring
change they have to experiment and take risk (p. 19). The authors indicate that proactive people tend
to work harder ...[by being] persistent in achieving their goals (p. 169) and treat every job as an
adventure (p. 184).
Leadership is not a solo act, it s a team effort the authors explain (p. 223). To enable others to act the
leader needs to create a climate of trust by facilitating relationships. To start the process one must, be
the first to let go of control, Kouzes and Posner explain and it requires self confidence (p. 227). Just

The Current Standing Of The U.s. Economy
Tracking the U.S Economy
Jessica Findish
Jacksonville University
Executive Summary In this paper, you will read about the current standing of the U.S. economy as of
spring and summer for 2015. Gross Domestic Product (GDP), unemployment rate, inflation rate,
foreign trade, consumer spending, business investment, and government spending will all be analyzed.
This analysis will then lead to the projection of the U.S. economy for the first two quarters of 2016.
U.S. Economy: Spring and Summer 2015
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) The Bureau of Economic Analysis showed output in the U.S.
increasing at a rate of 2.3% for the second quarter of 2015 (Sharf, 2015). This is a 1.7% increase from
the first quarter when real GDP increased 0.6% (Sharf, 2015). Current dollar GDP decreased 0.2
percent, which is the equivalent of $10.4 billion, in the first quarter of 2015 to $17,693.3 billion
(News Release: Gross Domestic Product). The B.E.A. also reports (GDP 2015) that personal
consumption has doubled within the first two quarters of 2015 from 1.8% to 3.6%, suggesting that
consumer income has also increased alongside GDP.
Unemployment Rate
According to the BLS (Labor Force Statistics...), the unemployment rate has decreased in 2015.
According to Graph 1, only May 2015 saw an increase in the unemployment rate of 0.1%, which then

Early American Colonies During The 18th Century

the unity of different races that motivated the young country to change its ways for the betterment of
its citizens, economy, and overall state of stability. At our nations lowest and darkest time, it was
slavery that not only was the culprit for the separation of the young colonies from each other, but also
the formula needed to unite the people who made up these states for the betterment of society. It was

A Worldwide Problem Of Global Warming
Electric Cars There is a worldwide problem of Global Warming. It is increasing day after day, harming
our planet s atmosphere by reducing the strength of the ozone layer. Global warming is putting all
basic human needs in jeopardy. There are various reasons behind global warming. One of the major
reasons is fuel engine cars and trucks we use in our everyday lives. Fuel engine cars leave a trail of
unhealthy monoxide gas as the result of combustion in the engine. Carbon Monoxide is one of many
gases which is harmful to the ozone layer. Global warming is already causing high temperatures,
rising sea levels, floods, and droughts. To help reduce the effects of the fuel engine cars on our
environment we should start using electric cars. Electric cars run on rechargeable batteries which do
not leave a trail of carbon monoxide. Electric cars are fuel efficient vehicles which use less gas to
travel the same distance as their less efficient counterparts. When we burn less fuel, we generate fewer
emissions. When emissions go down, the pace of global warming slows. Cleaner fuels produce fewer
emissions when they are burned. Some fuels such as those made from biofuels can reduce emissions
by 80 percent compared to gasoline, and cleaner extraction techniques can ensure that dirty fuel like
oil doesn t get dirtier. Electric cars will also help many countries stop fighting over fuel and also give
countries independence. Electric cars should be globalized so that it helps create a

become anxious of the hazards presented by modernisation , new innovative strategies to deal with the
risks, and technological advances. These developments have caused uncertainty, creating further risks
and a collective vulnerability to risk awareness (Giddens, 1991). This assignment will critically
analyse the way in which society s preoccupation with risk, influences the way in which the probation
service and police work.
The first part of this paper will discuss the significate changes to probation practice, by reviewing
probation history from the 1960s in England and Wales. Discussing how influential penal trends,
policy and practice evolution, have resulted in social work and probation work training becoming
detached (Robinson and McNeill, 2004). Retributivism theory in a culture of risk will be studied, with
the recommendations to punishment examined. The what works agenda (Martinson, 1974) will be
discussed progressing on to the emergence of populist punitiveness , and critically examining the
correlation with risk theory. Focusing on the progression of probation practice in late modernity, and
the use of risk assessments, it focuses on the risk instruments of clinical, actuarial and mixed
approaches. Attention is also given to Multi Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA), and
how the probation service and police, work together to protect the public

  • 2. What Did The Battle At The Rio Grande Cause The Mexican... TO WHAT EXTENT DID THE BATTLE AT THE RIO GRANDE CAUSE THE MEXICAN AMERICAN WAR? Leila Elhail History Extended Essay 12 Introduction April 25,1846 a Mexican Cavalry consisting of 3,000 men ambushed 70 US soldiers under Zachary Taylor s command at the disputed area between the Nueces River and the Rio Grande. Mexican troops ended up killing 16 American Citizens. This led President James K. Polk to write a letter to Congress asking for a Declaration of War against Mexico on May 11, 1846. In his declaration of war he included the famous quote: But now, after reiterated menaces, Mexico has passed the boundary of the United States, has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon the American soil. She has proclaimed that hostilities have commenced, and that the two nations are now at war. Congress approved the Declaration of War after only a few hours of debate, and so on May 13, 1846 the United States of America declared war on Mexico. Though it seems like the main reason for the Mexican American war was the shooting between American troops and a Mexican cavalry because of the fact that James K. Polk asked Congress for permission to declare war on Mexico right after the incident and the event was very prevalent in the letter, another reason for the Mexican American War may have been the popular ideology of Manifest Destiny. In 1845 John L. O Sullivan coined the term Manifest Destiny. Manifest Destiny was the ideology ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Pluto as a Dwarf Planet By definition from a Merriam Webster Dictionary a planet is any of the large bodies that revolve around the sun in the solar system which have a similar body to them . This is not a very specific explanation and makes it hard to fully grasp what it means; at this you could easily say that in fact Pluto a planet. However if you look at a scientific encyclopedia the definition is much different and more specific. The Access Science Encyclopedia says a planet is A) a celestial body that is in orbit around the sun B) has sufficient mass for its self gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it can assume a hydrostatic equilibrium shape C) clears the neighborhood around its orbit . This explanation is much different and clearer about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The International Astronomical Union decided that Pluto was too small to be a planet and created a new category to put it in, dwarf planets. Dwarf Planets are classified as A) a celestial body that is in orbit around the sun, B) has sufficient mass for it self gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that is assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, C) has not cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit, and D) is not a satellite . The criteria for both planets and dwarf planets are very similar, though planets must be able to clear the neighbourhood around its orbit. This basically means that a planet must be able to complete a rotation around the sun without interfering with another planets orbit. Pluto is very close to Neptune so they had a chance to collide into each other. If you look at a visual it is clear that there orbital rotation paths intersect with each other at two locations. This is another reason why Pluto is no longer considered a planet. As of 2006 dwarf planet was a new category and a new thing for astronomers. By definition it is simply just a planet except that it cannot complete a neighbourhood orbit around the sun. After planets were put into this grouping was noticed that all of these planets were much smaller in size and significantly farther away from the sun and the rest of the planets. All of the dwarf planets still orbit the sun however; it is just at a further distance. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Sustainable Development Of Green Logistics Based on sustainable development of green logistics in China and the countermeasures (2007), China is especially vulnerable to climate change due to its complex climatic conditions, a fragile ecological environment, a massive population and frequent natural disasters. Insufficient per ca pita resources and very sharp contradictions between development and environment force China to further develop a cycling economy. Green logistics is an important tool for sustainable development. However, logistics in China is in its infant period. Hence, there are some problems, for example, immediate economic benefits to the enterprise and ecological and social benefits faced, which results in negative environmental issues in China. It is worth noting that there is a need for the sustainable logistics system inhibiting cause harmful to the environment while forming a modern logistics system that can promote economic. • 6. The Importance Of Plagiarism In Writing Choices Plagiarism is when you take any form of writing and make it your own without giving proper credit to the owner. You can also be plagiarizing if you use some of your old work without the teacher knowing you did so. In universities across America about ¾ of people are involved in some kind of academic dishonesty (Heckler, Rice, and Bryan 229). Many students have different reasons as to why they had to cheat on an assignment and they range from not having enough time, not getting the sufficient information from the teacher or for the assignment, and sometimes some students also say that the teacher almost gives them no choice (Puka). William Miller, a Baptist convert, coined the interpretation of the prophecies concerning Christ s Second Advent. Miller used different Bible principles in the interpretation of the prophecy. Based on his final analysis, the Second Advent was to take place on 22nd October 1844. Miller preached the message across the U.S. and many converts gave their lives to Christ. • 8. Body Image Of Women Body image pertains to judgement about themselves or about their body perspective. But, what do you expect when the media is covered in pictures of perfect models and celebrities? Women s self esteem is lowering because they look at these women in comparison to themselves and they do not like the difference between the two, which leads them to belief that they need to change themselves. The media has gotten way out of hand with body image, and not in a good way. Magazines can also photoshop and edit pictures to make people look better than they actually look. They can change what their hair looks like, what their eyes look like, and their teeth too. They can change heir body shape to make their body figure look better. Women do not realize that people can change a picture pretty fast and make them look like someone different. They can edit their photos but they cant always change what their make up and hair color and everything else looks like because all of the good apps cost a lot of money and require brains and style to be able to function the app. Women want to be compared to women in a model status and one day wish they could look like them but if someone as myself could learn how to photoshop pictures then I would show women that I could change them as fast as other people can change those models that they look up too. The theory of nursing has existed for centuries, as family members cared for sick loved ones. However, it was not until the 19th century that nursing as a profession began to develop. It was during this time that Florence Nightingale made her significant contributions to nursing. Among other things, Nightingale helped society recognize nursing as a respectable occupation, established modern nursing education, and helped institute standards of nursing care (Taylor 7). A very large part of nursing, which many people do not realize, is patient education. Patients, and their families if needed, should understand not only the what but also the why behind their illness, medications, and treatments. The entire stadium is shaking as the fans show their support for our goalie who just laid out for a stunning save. As we settle back into our seats, wrapping blankets back around our shoulders, I hear from behind me, God is helping out between those poles tonight. Yeah, he must be a U.S. Women s fan too cuz Lord knows the men s team is terrible. This come from two middle aged women decked out in U.S. Soccer gear sitting a row behind me. The group of people around them chuckle after hearing this exchange. It s just a fact around here: the women play better. Just three months later I walk into Jordan Field, home of the Boston Breakers, a professional women s soccer team and as we walk towards the stands one of my friends jokes that even our high school has a better stadium than this. The sun is beating down on me, I squint up at the stands noticing how empty they are despite the small number of seats. Once the game starts it s clear that the fans here are just as enthusiastic as U.S. Women s National Team (USWNT) fans, there just happens to be a lot less of them. I began to wonder how is it that 26,500 people are willing to stand in the freezing cold to support the USWNT, but a professional women s soccer league that runs in the middle of the summer only averages about 6,610 fans per game ( U.S. WNT vs. England 1, 2017 NWSL ... Growing up in the slums of New York City my days consisted of stealing anything I could get my hands on, smoking weed, drinking and hanging out with my friends until the early hours of the night. My sense of accomplishment and achievement came from the fact I graduated high school. I cared for only myself and I wasn t dedicated to anything that didn t work in my favor. That all changed the day I enlisted in the United States Navy. Since that very first day of boot camp the military has had a positive effect on my life and changed me in so many ways. One change the military has had on me was living with discomfort. Living at home with my mother, I had all the comforts in the world. Time is spent acting similar to a normal civilian family, eating, drinking, laughing, crying, talking, teaching, fighting and conversing with one another have become daily routine. Realizing how much I appreciated the family feeling the deployments would provide I vowed to myself that when and if I had a family of my own I would never let a day we spend together go to waste. Teachers and students who witness bullying can work together to reduce bullying in schools and classrooms. But there is also evidence that those who were bystanders were not willing to help the victims (Espelage, Green, Polanin, 2012). Students often do not support victims when there are multiple witnesses (Salmicalli, 2010). Students expect someone else to intervene or ignore the victim or may consider the bullying to be a joke ( Terasahjo Salmivalli, 2003). Consequently, bullied victims feel that they are not only suffering pain from being bullied, but also from being ignored by peers (Salmavalli Poskirparta, 2012). ... The epic poem Beowulf was passed down verbally from generation to generation with enlightening Pagan teachings and elements. Christian elements were not included in the poem until a Christian monk added them when it was put as written text. However, the Christian aspects collide with the Pagan elements found in the poem. Things such as magic, unnatural creatures, and strange scenarios play a huge role in their faith. However, Christians believe that things such as dragons, witches, magic and the dark arts are of Satan. While the Pagans view the dragon as a fire breathing, greedy creature keeping treasure in its lair, the Christians view it as the devil making the setting of hell. The equivalent of Beowulf in the Christian faith would be Jesus Christ. He came into the world (lair) and freed us from sins (hell). Pagans view Beowulf as having superhuman powers that let him overcome any trial he may face. For example of Beowulf s strength, he lifted the giant s magical sword when nobody else could. His strength is matched by Christian faith with the story of Jesus was resurrected and came out from the tomb he was buried in. Beowulf fought for peace in the land of Geatland and Danes. Christ made peace with everyone. They both share qualities of the desire for peace. The biggest comparison between Beowulf and Jesus Christ is when they both died to save other people. According to Christian belief, Christ was crucified to save everyone from death. Beowulf was killed by the dragon in order to save someone else and to calm his soul from the loss of his village. Christ also found his true followers when he was carrying the cross and they came to help him. It is sometimes really hard to believe that the laptops, tablets, smartphones and touchpads that we use today are descendants of the supercomputer that once used to occupy the whole room. During a press conference many years ago, Bill Gates offered his opinion that anything greater than 500MB of hard drive memory would be pointlessly unnecessary. But as the time passed and the technology advanced bringing much more new valuable stuff, there echoed a voice, more or less a chaos, You have insufficient memory! . Memory management had many issues that different researchers came across but above all is the memory size that fills up within no time and we are again in search of more memory to store our data which we can t afford to lose. In the past days, computers used to store data in their Random Access Memory (RAM) that was surely not enough to store large amount of data and was even volatile (temporary). Merck should take this into consideration in its decision making and negotiation with LAB. Recommendation Based on our analysis, the value of this license is $13.98 million so we recommend that Merck agrees to accept the agreement but for a bid price up to that amount. We also suggest that Merck consider another option, which is to eliminate the license fee ($5 million, $2.5 million and $10 $40 million in Phase I, II and III respectively) and instead, pay Merck a royalty fee on any sales of the drug. Under the current agreement, Merck bears all the risk while LAB bears none. Even if the drug fails FDA approval, Merck would still need to pay an expected $9.8 billion in licensing fees to LAB in addition to all the costs for FDA testing. Instead, Merck should consider removing all licensing fees and only offer a royalty. This way, both LAB and Merck would have a strong incentive to seeing that the drug passes FDA testing. In that case, Merck should offer a royalty of 9.03% to LAB, which will give LAB an expected $9.8m in royalty. Without the licensing fee, Merck can offer up to 21% royalty fee (Appendix 4). For example, when buying a carton of milk, the advertisers will entice buyers with statistics and a list of healthy ingredients. Or while flipping through a magazine at the dentist s office, marketers draw the eyes in with bright colors and bold text. These elements of persuasion, rooted both in visual and logical appeals, can also be woven together to create an argumentative documentary. These documentaries, especially when considering controversial issues, have the power to broadcast important social messages to the world. This ability, however, can only be unlocked when the right rhetorical means are used to further their argument. The 13th, a documentary directed by Ava DuVernay, is a prime example of this. Released in October of 2016, this oscar nominated film made an immediate impact due to its provoking message on the mass criminalization of African Americans in the United States, skilfully exploring the disproportionate amount of African Americans in prison. Karl Marx, who was a German philosopher, economist, sociologist, journalist and revolutionary socialist created the theory of Marxism. Marx was born in Trier, Germany in 1818 and died in London in 1883. The social struggles in Marxs family were apparent before he was even born, ancestrally Jewish, he came from a long line rabbis on both sides of his family. His father, who was a lawyer converted to the Protestant denomination of Lutheranism, which was the predominant sect in Germany and Prussia at the time, in order to escape the constraints of Pre Nazi anti Semitic legislation. Marx started Trier High School in 1830, after having been home schooled by his father. The headmaster Hugo Wyttenbach, who was a friend of his fathers, employed many liberal humanists as teachers which the conservative government at the time strongly opposed leading to the police raiding the school in 1832, discovering literature supporting political liberalism had been distributed amongst the students. This being considered as such a heinous crime the authorities took it upon themselves to institute reforms and replaced several members of staff during Marx s attendance at the school. Marx attended the University of Bonn in 1835, aged 17, wanting to study philosophy; his father disagreed with this and believed that law would be a more appropriate field of study. In the absence of having the ability or strength to interact socially, we tend to steer away from social norms and isolate ourselves. One may consider that watching television correlates with the effects of anti socialization although, one may argue that is not the case. Television is a form of socialization that provides common ground for people to bond over, allows those lacking a social life to create their own social word, and provides an environment for conversation. Taking a look at our society today, television is a dominant way in which humans bond and interact with one another. According to Susan J. The Learning And Use Of The Foreign Language Nigeria s geographical position where she is surrounded by francophone neighbors such as Chad, Republic du Benin and Cameroon calls for a functional knowledge of French. With the knowledge of French, Nigeria and her Francophone neighbors would be able to work together locally and internationally. This however can only be achieved if there is communicative proficiency on the part of the citizens. Without this, Nigeria will be linguistically, politically, educationally and socially isolated from her francophone neighbors. This realization informed certain provisions guiding language study in Nigeria education system. The learning and use of the foreign language is not only peculiar to Nigeria. It is a worldwide phenomenon. Early bilingual education was advocated by the Renaissance humanists but in more recent times, international organizations are reiterating that position and giving it a broader application. Though not all of the sisters gave their life, each of them sacrificed a great deal. Throughout the novel, all four sisters heard the call to motherhood. This call to motherhood is not the only call heard by the Mirabal sisters, however, along with this call to motherhood, each sister is also called to sacrifice. For each sister, this call to sacrifice is answered in a different way. Early in her life, Dedé s father predicts that she will be a survivor: She ll bury us all, her father adds, laughing, in silk and pearls (Alvarez, 8). In jest, Dedé s father foreshadows the ultimate result of Dedé s firm and practical nature. Dedé is not a pushover, she can stand her ground. This practical nature is what keeps her from joining the revolution, and what ultimately saves her life. That is not to say that it is easy for Dedé to ignore the call of the ... • 33. Ectopedic Assessment We are dispatched to a patient Mrs A who is 7 weeks into her pregnancy. Mrs A has experienced some brown PV spotting. During most pregnancies this is regarded as normal and will usually occur around the same time that Mrs A period would occur. This may last for up to two days. Studies have suggested that this could be caused by hormones that control Mrs A s menstrual cycle, triggering the bleeding known as breakthrough bleeding. Alternatively, it could be the fertilised egg embedding into the uterus lining causing bleeding (implantation bleeding). Unfortunately, bleeding in early pregnancies can also be a sign of a miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy. Mrs A s bleeding has recently turned to bright red and this has increased to a 20cm size ... We will also assess for orthostatic vital sign changes and if the amount of virginal bleeding as there is a potential for heavy blood loss during a miscarriage. This loss can quickly develop into hemorrhagic shock (Bledsoe, porter, Cherry, 2011). Our initial assessment and treatment will focus on Mrs A, ABC s. If Mrs A is deemed compromised, hypertensive and is still actively bleeding we will place Mrs A into a comfortable position and begin to treat her for shock with oxygen therapy and bi lateral IV access along with an initiation of an isotonic solution for fluid resuscitation. We must also consider the likelihood of an ectopic pregnancy as patients who present with ectopic pregnancies can commonly present with the same symptoms as Mrs A. The most common complaint for an ectopic pregnancy is abdominal pain (Houry, Keadey, 2007). Research has also suggested that although bleeding is most commonly present in a miscarriage, the severity of bleeding does not always correlate with the patient proceeding to have a complete miscarriage. It is estimated that 50% of pregnant patients with vaginal bleeding will go on to have a viable pregnancy (Ramakrichnan, Scheild, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. What Is The Theme Of Survival In The Road By Cormac Mccarthy The ability to paint beautiful ideas on a canvas of dark events and imagery is an essential skill in the arsenal of an accomplished writer. In his novel The Road, Cormac McCarthy demonstrates his understanding of this skill. A reviewer from the San Francisco Chronicle described The Road saying, [McCarthy s] tale of survival and the miracle of goodness only adds to McCarthy s stature as a living master. It s gripping, frightening, and, ultimately, beautiful. These descriptions of the tale are true throughout the novel, but particularly at the ending of the story. In the final pages of the book, McCarthy continues to engage the reader with gripping and frightening moments, to emphasize the theme of survival, and to reveal beauty and the miracle of goodness. Throughout the novel, survival is a constant objective for the boy and his father. McCarthy s gripping and frightening moments are most obviously interwoven with this theme. Soon after the death of his father the boy looks up and sees that someone was coming. He started to turn and go back into the woods but he didnt. He just stood in the road and waited, the pistol in his hand (McCarthy 281). With the approach of this new potential threat, the boy s safety and survival are brought into question. As the strange man comes near, a tension builds while the boy tries to make a decision that could quite possibly affect the rest of his life. The tension dissipates when it is revealed that the man is not a threat, but a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Leadership Challenge, by Kouzes and Posner Essay In the Leadership Challenge, 4th edition, it is Kouzes Posner (2007) intention to present a road map for individuals to follow on their leadership journey. The authors stress that leadership is not a gene and it s not an inheritance. Leadership they assert is an identifiable set of skills and abilities that are available to all of us (p. 23). They make clear that the great person theory of leadership is plain wrong. Leaders are our everyday heroes who do extraordinary things on a regular basis (p. 23). Empirically based, the writers begin the book by offering five practices of exemplary leadership: Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act and Encourage the Heart (p. 14). In their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They have to enlist others in a common vision (p. 17). The challenge, Kouzes Posner says is to turn the idea into an inspired vision (p.106). The leader needs to imagine the possibilities and find a common purpose. The authors refer to James MacGregory Burns transformational leadership theory asserting that people commit to causes, not plans (p. 122). In order to have a transforming effect, the leader must raise the level of human conduct and ethical aspiration of both the leader and follower. Just like Kotter (1990) outlines the methods to change an organizational culture is by telling stories, using symbols, the designing of physical space, using jargon, rituals, etc., Kouzes Posner suggest the same thing when they explain the power in using symbolic language to communicate a shared identify and give life to a vision (p. 143). When challenging the process, leaders know that in order to bring change they have to experiment and take risk (p. 19). The authors indicate that proactive people tend to work harder ...[by being] persistent in achieving their goals (p. 169) and treat every job as an adventure (p. 184). Leadership is not a solo act, it s a team effort the authors explain (p. 223). To enable others to act the leader needs to create a climate of trust by facilitating relationships. To start the process one must, be the first to let go of control, Kouzes and Posner explain and it requires self confidence (p. 227). Just like Bass and Avolio (1980) ... Early American Colonies During The 18th Century While the early American colonies struggled to move forward during the late 17th and early 18th century due to political disagreements over matters such as slavery, it was the seed of hope planted by the unity of different races that motivated the young country to change its ways for the betterment of its citizens, economy, and overall state of stability. At our nations lowest and darkest time, it was slavery that not only was the culprit for the separation of the young colonies from each other, but also the formula needed to unite the people who made up these states for the betterment of society. It was these bold acts from people of all ages and sizes only separated by different skin colors that powered our beloved country through a Civil War into an era of peace and prosperity. One way that white and black Americans united for a common good was through the creation and running of the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad would not have been possible by only one ethnic group, but the combination of both black and white workers made this series of hidden trails to freedom nearly infeasible to infiltrate. Personally, this example of unity for the common good is my favorite throughout the entire history of America because of the unselfishness and bravery both sides sacrificed for each other to create a fair and equal society like our founding fathers designed our nation to be like. Both the black and white Americans needed and depended on each other for this ingenious plan to work. It was the belief of freedom and equality that brought these two sides together, and it was the fight against injustice that strengthened their bond and captivated the hearts and minds of others to join. Another great example of white and black unity during the time of slavery and social injustice was the great Abolitionist ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. A Worldwide Problem Of Global Warming Electric Cars There is a worldwide problem of Global Warming. It is increasing day after day, harming our planet s atmosphere by reducing the strength of the ozone layer. Global warming is putting all basic human needs in jeopardy. There are various reasons behind global warming. One of the major reasons is fuel engine cars and trucks we use in our everyday lives. Fuel engine cars leave a trail of unhealthy monoxide gas as the result of combustion in the engine. Carbon Monoxide is one of many gases which is harmful to the ozone layer. Global warming is already causing high temperatures, rising sea levels, floods, and droughts. To help reduce the effects of the fuel engine cars on our environment we should start using electric cars. Electric cars run on rechargeable batteries which do not leave a trail of carbon monoxide. Electric cars are fuel efficient vehicles which use less gas to travel the same distance as their less efficient counterparts. When we burn less fuel, we generate fewer emissions. When emissions go down, the pace of global warming slows. Cleaner fuels produce fewer emissions when they are burned. Some fuels such as those made from biofuels can reduce emissions by 80 percent compared to gasoline, and cleaner extraction techniques can ensure that dirty fuel like oil doesn t get dirtier. Electric cars will also help many countries stop fighting over fuel and also give countries independence. Electric cars should be globalized so that it helps create a ... • 42. Society s Preoccupation With Risk The risk society has created a risk awareness in the Criminal Justice System. Professionals have become anxious of the hazards presented by modernisation , new innovative strategies to deal with the risks, and technological advances. These developments have caused uncertainty, creating further risks and a collective vulnerability to risk awareness (Giddens, 1991). This assignment will critically analyse the way in which society s preoccupation with risk, influences the way in which the probation service and police work. The first part of this paper will discuss the significate changes to probation practice, by reviewing probation history from the 1960s in England and Wales. Discussing how influential penal trends, policy and practice evolution, have resulted in social work and probation work training becoming detached (Robinson and McNeill, 2004). Retributivism theory in a culture of risk will be studied, with the recommendations to punishment examined. The what works agenda (Martinson, 1974) will be discussed progressing on to the emergence of populist punitiveness , and critically examining the correlation with risk theory. Focusing on the progression of probation practice in late modernity, and the use of risk assessments, it focuses on the risk instruments of clinical, actuarial and mixed approaches. Attention is also given to Multi Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA), and how the probation service and police, work together to protect the public ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
