The Poverty Trap Of Africa
Christian Deeter
Mr. Andrews
English 11 AP
22 October 2014
The Poverty Trap Imagine a small village in Africa. What images come to mind? Is it small huts in a
desolate village? Or how about exotic animals? The truth is that although some of these descriptions
are accurate, they tend to leave out the pain and suffering of people. Every day 21,000 children die
throughout different parts of the world (Shah). These deaths are the result of poverty as well as the
conditions that come with it. Being in poverty is so much more than just not having money. Hunger,
lack of resources, and wars plague developing countries, all of which have to do with poverty. Around
870 million people in the world are severely undernourished ( 2013 World Hunger). With 7.1 billion
people living in the world this means that 1 in 8 of them aren t getting enough food to sustain what
their bodies need (2013 World Hunger). Not surprisingly though 852 million of the hungry live in
developing countries (2013 World Hunger). What causes the developing countries to be so far behind
the rest of the world when it comes to lacking the basic resources needed by every human being?
Dictionary.com defines a developing country as a country having a standard of living well below that
possible with financial or technical aid (Dictionary). Looking at this definition, it s easy to understand
why world hunger isn t its own problem, but connected to the poverty levels. There s a saying that
goes money makes the world

Better Than Revenge
A warm evening breeze blew through Reese Todd s short blonde hair as she took long strides towards
the stadium. Knowing that the roads were blocked, she walked through the palm tree lined streets.
Never had she dared explore this city even though it was only about 75 miles from her vacation home
in Cabo Frio. The crowd grew denser as she found it harder to keep moving at a constant pace and
ended up squeezing through any space she could find to get ahead. As she neared the field, screams of
excitement filled her ears, but later, those would have a different meaning. The doors flew open to the
security checkpoint and she was able to pick up her pace. The savory smell of buttery popcorn and hot
dogs blended perfectly with the sweet aromas of cotton candy and soda. The guard at the door ushered
her to the side after looking through her bag. He pulled out the gun from within and started to say into
his walkie talkie, Fellas, I think we ve found Mr. X, but not before Reese could pull out her badge and,
after careful examination, was waved through. They had been warned, she realised, about Mr. X. They
know he, or she, should be here tonight She had even overheard some terrified fans sporting 1D
merchandise talking about him. Their hands trembled as the words spilled from their mouths, knowing
that tonight might be their lasts. Reese made her way towards her seat which was almost on the floor
of the stadium, but just high enough so she could see everything that was going on

Everything We Know To Get Started Essay
How did everything that we know today get started?
The beginning of everything, the big bang, the idea that the universe was suddenly born and is not
infinite. Up to the middle of the 20th century most scientist thought the universe as infinite and
ageless, until Einstein s theory of relativity gave us a better understanding of gravity and Edwin
Hubble discovered that galaxies are moving apart from one another in a way that fits previous
predictions. In 1964 by accident cosmic background radiation was discovered in relic of the early
universe, which together with other observational evidence made the big bang the accepted theory in
science. Since then improved technology in science like the Hubble telescope has given us a pretty
good picture of the big bang and the structure of the cosmos. Recent ... Show more content on

Finally there was light! Okay but what about that part we didn t talk about? What happened at the
beginning? This part can be defined as the big bang. We don t know at all what happened here; at this
point our tools break down. Natural laws stop making sense, time itself becomes wibbly wobbly. To
understand what happened here, we need a theory the unifies Einstein s relativity and quantum
mechanics, something countless scientist are working on right now. But this leaves us with lots of
unanswered questions. Were there universes before our own? Is this the first and only universe? What
started the big bang, or did it occur naturally based on laws that we don t understand yet? We don t
know, and maybe we never will. But what we don know is that the universe as we know it started here
and gave birth to particles, galaxies, stars, the earth, and you. Since we ourselves are made of dead
stars, we are not separate from the universe; we are part of it. You could even say that we are the
universe s way of experiencing itself. So lets keep on experiencing it, until there are know more

Support Language Development
There are many factors which can aid language development, particularly through writing (Watts et
al., 2013). Jones and Coffey (2013) identified that writing should be developed procedurally through
copying, initially at word level to learn spellings and develop familiarisation with vocabulary and
individual letters. Before then progressing to phrase level and on to sentences. It is thought that
through copying the children are beginning to memorise the vocabulary and can help them to engrain
key sentence structures, as they pay close attention to the individual words and spellings. Macaro
(2006) has also identified that copy writing is often used as a way of remembering spellings for new
target vocabulary. Hurrell (1999) criticises the motion of copy writing: as it gives the children too
many things to focus on. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is a very difficult task especially in a foreign language with differing word structures and
sentence conventions. Another criticism of copy writing is that children often make assumptions that
copy writing is easy which means they do not necessarily pay full attention, meaning they make
careless mistakes which result in the little recall of the vocabulary (Macaro, 2006). Alternative
activities such as word searches, crosswords and gap filling exercises, as outlined by Kirsch (2008),
encourage the children to focus on each individual letter, which thus supports the memorisation of
their spellings. It also encourages the ability to identify common grammatical structures and raises
phonetic awareness. It is important for children to improve their phonetic awareness when learning to
write in a foreign language alongside being allowed to make mistakes without fear of second language
anxiety, as outlined by Levine

A Fountain Research Paper
The Valley of Many Fountains Have you ever seen a place that was so surreal that the landscape
looked as if it were green screen? What if you were able to experience the rush of watching someone
run off the cliff of a mountain only to watch them glide gracefully through the sky? What do you think
it would sound like to hear over 20,000 liters of water pounding through a mountain every second?
Can you imagine cheese so natural that you can almost taste the grass the cows ate? A place this
surreal could only be located in Switzerland, one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

One day, my mom and went to the top of one of the Alps called the Schilthorn which had this James
bond Museum because one of the Bond movies from the 60 s had been filmed there and where I got to
play in the snow for the first time. The Schilthorn also had a revolving restaurant on top of the
mountain so as we were trying to warm up from walking around in the wind and the snow on the top
of the mountain by having some hot chocolate we got to see all the Alps from all angles. Another
afternoon we were there, my mom and I went to Trummelbach falls which one of the other tourist at
our hotel recommended doing because it was a fall inside the mountain. We took an elevator shaft up
into the mountain and when we got out, all I could hear was the pounding of twenty thousand liters of
water going through the mountain per second which would echo across the mountain caverns. As we
walked further into the mountain, we got to see different parts of the fall at every level and there were
all these really cool shaped caverns. In order to see the rest of the falls, we had to walk outside down
the mountain and every time we came around the corner there would be the falls in the shape of funky
spirals or turns. Plus, as we walked down the mountain, I could see all the way across the valley with
cows grazing on pastures, waterfalls sprouting out, and snowcapped Alps all at once. It was my

Lee de Forest
Lee De Forest
Lee De Forest was born Aug. 26, 1873, Council Bluffs, Iowa. De Forest was the son of a
Congregational minister. His father moved the family to Alabama and there assumed the presidency of
the nearly bankrupt Talladega College for Negroes. Excluded by citizens of the white community who
resented his father s efforts to educate blacks, Lee and his brother and sister made friends from among
the black children of the town and spent a happy although sternly disciplined childhood in this rural
community. (Kraeuter, 74). As a child he was fascinated with machinery and was often excited when
hearing of the many technological advances during the late 19th century. He began tinkering and
inventing things even in high school, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The audion helped AT amp;T set up coast to coast phone service, and it was also used in everything
from radios to televisions to the first computers. (A Science Odyssey: People and Discoveries, 1999).
By the time he died he had over 300 patents, but few of them ever had much success. In fact, De
Forest seemed to have a long streak of failures. He was regularly involved in patent lawsuits (indeed,
he spent his fortune on legal bills). He went through four marriages, had a number of failed
companies, was defrauded by his business partners, and was even once indicted (but later acquitted)
for mail fraud. (Kraeuter, 79).
With the audion, however, De Forest had a solid success. De Forest has been labeled one of the fathers
of the electronic age, since the audion helped start the explosion of electronics earlier this century.
American inventor of the Audion vacuum tube, which made live radio broadcasting possible and
became the key component of all radio, telephone radar, television, and computer systems before the
invention of the transistor in 1947. (Kraeuter, 79). Forest passed away on June 30, 1961 in Hollywood,
CA. De Forest wrote an autobiography entitled Father of Radio, but did not get that recognition from
the rest of the world. He is remembered as one contributor to an industry that was, truth, the work of
many people. (Kraeuter, 79).

One of the top places in London to view amazing street art besides the Leake Street Tunnel,
Shoreditch and Brick Lane, is the colourful Camden Town. Nestled along the side streets off Camden
High Street and Chalk Farm Road you can find work from many well renowned, international and
local artists such as Otto Schade, Onesto, Pegasus and Gnasher.
Slowly succumbing to thoughtless tagging, this John Lennon piece by Gnasher was created in early
2015 and is located on Jamestown Road, painted on the side of the Oxford Arms Pub.

In Steven Universe, there are a variety of different gem types introduced throughout the series. So
many, that it would be impossible to list them all here. Therefore, I will be taking those that are the
most archetypal or ones that are the most relatable and explaining their characteristics and
personalities. Note that not all the same types of gems act the exact same way I m simply listing the
stereotypical personalities we have seen from a portion of the same gem population: Amethysts These

Pearls have a multitude of personalities depending on which diamond they serve. Pearls under Yellow

Rubies are the common Homeworld foot soldiers. The more rare a gem type is, the higher they are in

The s Usage Of Chance And Coincidence As The Mode Of...
Lermontov s usage of chance and coincidence as the mode of expression of fate can be seen explicitly
in Princess Mary and The Fatalist, both short stories from Pechorin s journal. Princess Mary retells the
story of the time that Pechorin spent in the town of Pyatigorsk, a spa town located in the Caucases. In
Pyatigorsk, Pechorin encounters an old acquaintance of his, Grushnitsky, who Pechorin secretly
dislikes despite his veil of friendship. Also present in the town are Princess Ligovskaya and her
daughter, the titular Princess Mary. Princess Ligovskaya and Princess Mary are very wealthy and
normally live in Moscow, where they live as eminent socialites. Grushnitsky is instantly captivated by
the young Princess Mary and gradually ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pechorin, now anxious at the probability of his survival, loses the toss and thus stations himself on the
edge of the cliff. Pechorin, now doubting that he will survive, gazes upon Grushnitsky with a degree
of aristocratic fear, waiting for Grushnitsky to shoot. However as Grushnitsky stands just six paces
from the unarmed Pechorin, he loses his resolve to kill and exclaims, I can t do it (Lermontov 123).
Yet he turns back toward Pechorin and fires capriciously, merely grazing Pechorin s knee and causing
him no harm. Knowing that Grushnitsky s second did not load his pistol, Pechorin has the pistol
loaded and proceeds to kill the unrepentant Grushnitsky.
Chance and Coincidence are thus used by Lermontov as the mode of expression of Fate in Princess
Mary. It was not fated for Pechorin to die at the hand of Grushnitsky, thus chance compelled
Grushnitsky to lose his will to kill Pechorin. Additionally, chance causes Grushnitsky s random shot at
Pechorin to merely graze Pechorin s leg. Because Pechorin was not predestined to die in this duel,
everything unfolded precisely the way it needed to in order to insure Pechorin s continued well being.
Conversely, the events of the duel occurred in such a way that assured Grushnitsky s death, illustrating
his predestination to die during the duel. Firstly, Pechorin would not have been able to shoot
Grushnitsky if he did not know that a bullet had not been loaded into his gun. Pechorin only gained

The Case Of Somaliland
The strain between the privilege to outer self determination and regional respectability in Africa:
Somaliland as a case study
1. Research background : The case of Somaliland
The populace of Somaliland are enduring because of the inconsistencies of self determination and
regional integrity. On 26 June 1960, Somaliland gained its independence from Britain following 80
years of colonization with the name, the British Protectorate of Somaliland. After 5 days of
independence, Somaliland united with Somalia or the Italian Protectorate , which took her
independence from Italy on 1 July 1960.During these 5 days, Somaliland was perceived as a free state.
For reasons clarified beneath, Somaliland involved its sway and united with Somalia with the
condition that the two countries make a more suitable state based on equivalent equity of riches and
power sharing. This did not happen and the ambitions of the people of Somaliland got to be
unbeneficial. A wide range of human rights outrages were submitted in Somaliland by the military
administration that crumpled in 1991. Due to the mal treatment, which they met because of the
unification with Somalia also, with the disappointment of Somalia ... Show more content on

Miseducation Of Stereotyping
There are serval ways that you as an educator may help to defuse stereotyping. This must begin with
self awareness. This is important because children learn best by observing those in their surroundings.
If adults can openly talk with children about diversity and why it s good and how prejudice can be
harmful children are provided with awareness. Children ask all kinds of questions and in doing so
learn from them. If you avoid a question about someone s race gender, disability and sexuality,
children will notice. They could think that the questions are inappropriate or unimportant and will
there for make up their own conclusions which may be incorrect and not fair. This is why as adults we
need to learn our self how to honestly and openly communicate

Aesthetic Analysis
Aesthetics is the branch of philosophy that asks questions about the nature of art and beauty. The
Classical definition of art is the good, the true, the beautiful. Art equals something that is beautiful
then it is true and leads the person experiencing it, to the good. While this may be the classical
definition of art it is not quite accurate. To think that something is true and good just because it is
beautiful is not right. There are three critiques of this definition which define art in a different light.
Leo Tolstoy defines one as romantic art; The essence of a work of art is the emotion it causes to an
audience. It makes everyone feel as one because they are all feeling the same emotion. Malcolm
Bradbury defines modern art as a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

this song with four parts to it describing a religious experience he went through fighting drug
addiction. The first part Acknowledgement the start of the saxophone is like a deep breath, the beats of
the piano and drums start creating a feeling of almost tranquility in knowing love exists and there is
hope. The next part Resolution starts out quiet and faint, then a loud saxophone blares and the drums

third part pursuance the drums start and increase more rapidly, and more rapidly simulating a person

his goal in overcoming his addictions and he is praising! Just these simple note to this song if one didn

The S curve (Figure 3), allows businesses to predict the rise and fall of new product life cycles within
their market or industry. Whilst the airline industry in itself is in the maturity stage, the low fare
segment is currently in the growth stage. Gaining in popularity over the past few years, the low fare
segment is slowly reaching out to the masses and shedding its traditional negative impression of
compromising on safety and service quality. A growing middle class in the region, with increased
standards of living and disposable income and an appetite for travel combined with increasing fuel

Almost everyone has some kind of leisure time whether it is a couple hours or a couple days. What
varies is the type of recreational activities people choose to do during that time. Although leisure and

Furthermore, during the winter months, basketball was the only sport I had access too because there
were indoor courts available. These environmental factors inclined me to choose basketball as my
main recreation in terms of competitive sport and now it is one of my favorite sports. It was hard for
me to engage in my previous recreational activities because nobody enjoyed playing soccer or cricket.
This constrained my choices in terms of what kind of recreational activities I wanted to do. Another
factor that separated me from playing sports such as soccer and cricket were economic factors. During
the winter season, the only way I could play these sports was if I joined the indoor leagues but these
leagues were quite expensive. Coming from a middle class family, these extra expenses were hard to
manage and sustain. Soon it became too much and so I had to quit and find other recreational activities
to do in my leisure. Due to these various sociocultural factors, my involvement in certain sports was
severely hampered while other sports such as basketball were immensely facilitated.
Another environmental factor that really controls when I do my leisure is the area or locality where I
live. I do not live in a prestigious area and thus there are many things lacking such as recreation
centers and gyms. Your built environment influences how physically active you are because you are

Why You Should Not Stand Without A Thesis
In the same way that a house, gorgeously designed and elegantly decorated as it may be, cannot stand
without a solid foundation, so can a college essay not stand without a thesis statement. Of course, facts
and the way in which they are presented are vital to whatever point a writer is trying to make, but
without a central foundation to link the arguments, all one can hope to present is a collection of
various points jumbled together in an futile attempt to grasp some sense of reason. A thesis is precisely
that foundation; a crucial statement that tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the paper ,
according to Writing Center. Since the thesis presents the central arguments of an essay, it must be
corroborated by the rest of the author s work, otherwise it will not suffice to convince a professor of
the matters it addresses. In addition to being the cornerstone of the essay, Aims says that a thesis states
why the essay is important and worth reading . Certainly, a thesis may be well constructed to inform
the reader about the subject of the paper. However, if it is not captivating and fails to provide the
reader with a good reason as to why he or she should spend their time learning about the matters of the
essay, the writer has already made a fatal flaw since the reader will begin the essay uninterested.

Ethnic Nationalism Source Of Community Of Fear Essay
Ethnic Nationalism Source of Community of Fear
Nationalism, according to the most widely accepted definitions of, is the doctrine that the state and the
nation should be congruent. However, there is much more to add to the definition of nationalism today
in connection to the ethnic and civil society. The definition of nationalism depends on its context. The
typology of nationalism defines its strength and/or weakness of the relationship among the community
in which it s defined. While civil nationalism accepts people for who they are in the unique condition
that they accept the country s constitution, ethnic nationalism goes beyond and requires that the
community should share a common culture which can be raced, ethnic group, language or religion.
There are many explanations in resonating for why ethnic nationalism is an exclusive National project
(according to Igatieff). Despite the urgency of this issue, Scholars have until recently not addressed
the question of accommodation of communities regarding ethnic nationalism. This argument will
contribute to this discussion, by looking at the link between conflicts and ethnic nationalism. The
points presented in this argumentation will highlight the weaknesses of ethnic nationalism in modern
states. The argument will articulate these weaknesses by first looking at the genealogical roots and the
modernist origin of ethnic nationalism. Then it will sketch the relationship between mass media,
narcissism, intolerance and the

Columbine Shootings And Its Impact On School Security
Introduction Tuesday April 20th, 1999 began like any other day. Parents went to work, and the
children went off to school. Neither worried about the other, or how their day would turn out. But,
hours later everything changed ( Columbine Highschool Massacre. ). Little did the residents of
Columbine, Colorado know their high school would be a statistic for one of the largest school
massacres in US History. On this day, two teenage boys were responsible for killing 12 innocent
students and a teacher, wounding 23 more students, and then killing themselves (Miller). While a
horrific event, the Columbine tragedy improved the safety in schools by upgrading security systems,

By this time Klebold and Harris had both taken their life and at least 75 police officers were
surrounding Columbine High School. About two hours later, the SWAT team entered the east side of
the building finding injured victims waiting for assistance. Teacher David Sanders was shot and had
been bleeding for three hours before getting help (Kohn). Sanders was the last of 15 people to die at
Columbine that day. Twenty three wounded were taken to hospitals. Six had brain or spinal injuries.
Several nearly bled to death. Doctors at six hospitals worked on wounded children all through the
night, and saved every one of them. (Kohn). The security during the massacre at Columbine High
School was minimal. Senator Dianne Feinstein said There were two armed law enforcement officers at
that campus, and you see what happened. Fifteen dead ... 23 wounded. There was one officer at
Columbine who was a 15 year veteran of the Jefferson County, Colorado with the name of Deputy
Neil Gardner and another officer, Deputy Paul Smoked, who was a patrolman, both whom were
armed. This is where the debate on how to protect schools began (Terkel). The governor of New
Jersey, Chris Christie, said he doesn t think that having armed police officers at a school will make it
safer or encourage learning. The NRA s top lobbyist, Wayne LaPierre, said, Having armed security on

Gary Paulsen s Nightjohn
In 1993, Gary Paulsen wrote the book Nightjohn. Nightjohn is a book set in the 1850s, during slavery.
It shows the thoughts and views of a twelve year old girl named Sarny. Sarny is a black slave girl, who
is uneducated, malnourished, and living life the best she can. Suddenly, a man by the name of
Nightjohn is brought to the plantation. Sarny traded tobacco for learning the alphabet from Nightjohn.
Nightjohn ran away one night, and was thought to never return, but actually he created a hidden,
underground school. Nightjohn could have been inspired by two interviews, Uncle Billy McCrea s and
Walter Calloway s. Nightjohn was influenced by real slave interviews. One of the interviews in the
archive is an interview from Uncle Billy McCrea. McCrea said, ...they d take them, hang them up by

Calloway s content is alarmingly alike and dislike to Nightjohn. Calloway said, ...whipped a nigger
gal bout thirteen years old so hard she dearly die. Nightjohn was whipped ,so that he had ripple scars

eat..., but Waller s plantation, slaves were barely fed. Calloway s plantation had the privilege to
practice religion on Sundays, something that Cel Waller would never allow. Calloway even thought it
wasn t that bad by saying, Dey treated us purty good. Calloway s recall of his slave times were similar
,yet different to Nightjohn.
Slave interviews helped Paulsen describe the cruelty of slavery. His uses of descriptive words and
phrases help readers visualize the torture the slaves had to endure. By choosing a young girl, he did
not only tell the tale of a young girl, but adults through her vision. It showed how human beings with a
different skin color can be treated like animals. Nightjohn put into words the struggle of America s

Method Acting
The Magic Touch of the Method Actor Method acting allows actors to go beyond the conventional and
practical way to act and make the work more human, more alive, more exciting, more amusing, and
more entertaining. According to its critics, Method acting counteracts the original form of acting
because the actor concentrates more on himself rather than the development of the character. Despite
this claim, Method acting continues to be the key technique actors use to create in themselves the
thoughts and feelings of their characters, so as to develop convincing performances. Evoked by
Constantin Stanislavski at the Moscow Art Theatre in the early 20th century, Method acting quickly
spread on to the stage and screen at the end of the 40s and early 50s and has reconstructed what is
required of the actor. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first appearance of Stanislavski s new company followed many unsuccessful previous groups that
performed a series of ephemeral farces, melodramas, and operettas (Hirsch 22). He hated the theatre in
the theatre and wanted truthful, real life, not mundane life, but artistic life (Hirsch 19). Stanislavski
wanted a stage where his audience would be so involved forgetting they were an audience, and they
would believe they were there at the time and place the play was set (Hirsch, and Bell 6). With this,
Stanislavsky created an ideal system where actors practiced techniques that would later be proven to
be effective on stage and screen. Stanislavski s based his entire system heavily on Anton Chekhov s
work ( Constantin Stanislavsky 4). Stanislavsky realized he was in love with acting that had no laws,
which caused him to create what was first known as the Stanislavsky system ; Now known as the
Method. Stanislavsky focused on creating the character from the outer to the inner, meaning from the
body to the soul of the character, in order to help him develop the character (Van Heerden

Film Analysis Of The Film Blue Velvet
The film Blue Velvet was written and directed by David Lynch in 1986. This movie was inspired by
Bobby Vinton s cover of the song Blue Velvet that was released in 1963. In the film, David Lynch
showed stylization through the opening and closing montages, as well as the ear of Denmark. Another
stylized moment seen within this film is through the odd connection between Booth and Lincoln. Blue
Velvet is a cult hit dealing with violence, sex, and kidnapping, all being glorified. Within the movie,
the camera zooms into the ear, which is significant within the film because it starts Jeffery s shady
journey. In the movie, it starts off showing viewers a blue velvet curtain. According to page one of the

things are normal . The happy closure is unconvincing when applying the next day template to expect
the memories and aftershocks of Frank s disease to be wiped out by his death , McBride said. I
disagree with this. The ending of the movie symbolized peace in my opinion. Despite the disease,
Jeffery put inside her and her conflicting facial expression, Dorothy can go back to living her normal,
American dream. The primal scene is focused on Jeffery coming of age. Many times throughout the
movie, sexualized scenes are shown. A specific scene was at the beginning of the movie when Jeffery
s dad begins to have a stroke while watering the grass. As he falls, the nozzle of the garden hose is
right where his crotch is. According to Professor McBride, this is necessary for the dog to
continuously pound on him as it instinctively barks at and bites the streaming water. This scene and
set up shows how animalistic these attacks are. During this scene, a young child sees this animalistic
outbreak, which relates back to a Freudian assumption. Since this film has the Freudian sensation right
at the beginning, it makes it obvious that this film will be an erotic one. Something else that was
important in the primal scene was Lynch first provides this child witnessing a perplexing violent

Essay on Enzymes
Enzymes Enzymes are catalysts. Most are proteins. (A few ribonucleoprotein enzymes have been
discovered and, for some of these, the catalytic activity is in the RNA part rather than the protein part.
Link to discussion of these ribozymes.)
Enzymes bind temporarily to one or more of the reactants of the reaction they catalyze. In doing so,
they lower the amount of activation energy needed and thus speed up the reaction. Most of these
interactions are weak and especially so if the atoms involved are farther than about one angstrom from
each other. So successful binding of enzyme and substrate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is because the structure of malonic acid allows it to bind to the same site on the enzyme (b). But
there is no oxidation so no speedy release of products. The inhibition is called competitive because if
you increase the ratio of succinic to malonic acid in the mixture, you will gradually restore the rate of
catalysis. At a 50:1 ratio, the two molecules compete on roughly equal terms for the binding
(=catalytic) site on the enzyme.
Factors Affecting Enzyme Action
[IMAGE]The activity of enzymes is strongly affected by changes in pH and temperature. Each
enzyme works best at a certain pH (left graph) and temperature (right graph), its activity decreasing at
values above and below that point. This is not surprising considering the importance of
* tertiary structure (i.e. shape) in enzyme function and
* noncovalent forces, e.g., ionic interactions and hydrogen bonds, in determining that shape.
Examples:
* the protease pepsin works best as a pH of 1 2 (found in the stomach) while
* the protease trypsin is inactive at such a low pH but very active at a pH of 8 (found in the small
intestine as the bicarbonate of the pancreatic fluid neutralizes the arriving stomach contents). [
Discussion]
Changes in pH alter the state of ionization of charged amino acids (e.g., Asp, Lys) that may

Little Italy Research Paper
Little Italy is unique because it is no longer the ethnic enclave it was 115 years ago. When comparing
Little Italy to other ethnic neighborhoods, we can immediately see differences. In Chinatown, for
example, there are many Chinese restaurants, businesses, and structures scattered throughout the
neighborhood. In addition, many Chinese people can be found visiting, working, and even living in
the enclave. When you see these Chinese individuals, they are often speaking the Chinese language.
Little Italy, however, is quite different from Chinatown. Unlike Chinatown, Little Italy has lost its
ethnic flavor. While Little Italy was once a neighborhood thriving with a heavy Italian immigration

Spillover Chapter Summary
Spillover by David Quammen is most definitely one of the more unique, yet applicable novels I have
read in quite some time. As someone who is interested in attending pharmacy school and ultimately
dealing with disease and sickness for the rest of my life, I found it very mesmerizing to learn about
how certain zoonotic diseases came to be. With that said, I ll go right into the first chapter: Pale Horse
. This chapter focuses on the virus now known as Hendra. It started in a place known as Brisbane,
Australia (more specifically a northern suburb known as Hendra) in 1994 where some horses began
experiencing the disease. This also ultimately led to some human infections, some of which causes
fatalities. Vic Rail, a horse trainer, was the first human to fatally experience Hendra ... Show more

This chapter focuses on Malaria. When Quammen began writing this, he was told to not include
Malaria because it was not zoonotic but vector borne. However, Quammen found that the human
version of Malaria come from a mosquito biting an infected gorilla, and then biting a human. Since the
disease was delivered to a new host, malaria has now become zoonotic and a spillover. I personally
find this chapter of the book to be rather intriguing because compared to some of the other diseases in
this book such as Hendra or SARS; I would have liked to think that I was rather knowledgeable about
Malaria, but that was not the case. I have never heard of Malaria being a Spillover and I found it
compelling to read about in this book. The next chapter of this book, Dinner at the Rat Farm , is
centered on SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome). In 2003, SARS made its presence known as
it rapidly spread globally to places like Canada and the Philippines. SARS origin belongs to southern
province of China called Guangdong. The SARS outbreak in China was quick and not to be messed

The Effects of Imperialism Imperialism was a negative event that happened to the Democratic

the land not as a colony but as his own. He treated the Congolese as slaves to gather him resources to
help make him more wealthy. Imperialism was the worst thing that happened to the Democratic

them which ultimately lead to the Belgian government stripping him of Power The rule of King
Leopold II instilled disturbing methods of ruling. He enslaved the people of The democratic republic

whatever it took to gain resources, even if it meant enslaving the people. King Leopold II nearly

he depleted them of their resources which means they don t have much to export as a country now.

however in Consider The Lobster by David Foster Wallace the reader is challenged to think on what
his food was before it was food. In Consider The Lobster Wallace explores the Maine Lobster Festival
a correspondent of Gourmet Magazine, during his time at the MLF he sees a new side to lobster and
learns about the lobster as a sentient creature. After his exploration he comes to a moral dilemma of
cooking and eating lobster, he realizes that our society does not think of our food as anything more

I contemplate this latter possibility: It could be that their lack of endorphin/enkephalin hardware
means that lobsters raw subjective experience of pain is so radically different from mammals that it
may not even deserve the term pain. (63). In this example Wallace is using reasoning and research to
uncover pain as a lobster perceives it. His use of research as well as controversial views really
invigorates the reader and convinces him to think more deeply about his views of pain and the pain
experience. Ultimately, the only certain virtues of the home lobotomy and slow heating methods are
comparative, because there are even worse/crueler ways people prepare lobster. (63). Wallace also
argues the point that our pursuit of cooking lobster humanely is rather pointless when most of the
world outside of America cruelly breaks the lobsters apart while they are alive and cook them. The
technique of comparing the issue throughout the world greatly changes the tone of the essay and
makes the logic of boiling lobster seem much more sound. After all, isn t being extra aware and
attentive and thoughtful about one s food and its overall context part of what distinguishes a real
gourmet. (64). Here Wallace changes his focus from the lobster to the gourmets who speak so highly
of this food. He is trying reason as to why these people who pride themselves on being experts are
being so ignorant to an issue which is relevant to them. Changing the focus also puts the reader in a
different mindset where he is considering himself as the gourmet and trying to reason as to why

Importance of Grammar Essay
A. Introduction
It is not uncommon to say that grammar instruction plays an important role in language teaching.
Regarding the status and importance of grammar teaching, a variety of opinions have been made.
Batstone (1994) states that language without grammar would be chaotic: countless words without the
indispensable guidelines for how they can be ordered and modified (p. 4). More vividly, Wang (2010)
makes two similes. She compares grammar to the frame of a house, which is a decisive factor to
ensure the solidness of it. Additionally, she regards grammar as a walking stick, whose function is to
help and support students to learn English. Thus, the nature of grammar instruction manifests its own
significance as it helps students ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

B. Evaluation of Miss Wong s Teaching Approach
B(1). Teaching philosophy
It is teachers beliefs rather than their knowledge that have a greater influence on their instruction
(William Burden, 2000). Meighan suggests seven kinks of teachers beliefs about learners: resisters,
receptacles, raw materials, clients, partners, individual explorers and democratic explorers. Unlike the
first three concepts which focus on teachers, the last four require learners active involvement (as cited
in William Burden, 2000). In Miss Wong s teaching approach, a PPP model (i.e., Presentation, Practice
and Production) is generally adopted. She firstly presents target grammatical structure of passive
voice. Then students do some exercises along with teacher s answer checking. However, it seems the
final production step is omitted, resulting in students lacking opportunities to apply the knowledge
into other contexts. From her instruction, we can see Miss Wong tends to regard her students as
receptacles that are required to absorb the items she transmits. What the instruction concerns is
whether students can transform sentences from active to passive or vice verse from a structural level,
which is a typical example of a

Individual productivity calculator can be devised to reward those who work more in order to keep the
parity issues from creeping in and at the same time providing growth and recognition to the employees
as mentioned in the Herzberg two factor model (Newstrom, 2015). This model can be interpreted as a
pioneering technique to motivate the team.
When the employees sweat out to reach the production targets, they give their best and the mind set or
the attitude of the employees towards the organization changes. The management should set up
monthly workshops to interact with their employees, thus making the employees feel that the
management is well within their reach and is ready to listen to their pleas. Organizing such workshops
will stimulate the feedback process which will help the management to cut down on production and
sales costs in turn maximising the returns (Arnolds amp; Boshoff, 2002). Organizing technical trips
and field tours further improves the management employee relationship as this allows the two parties
to work together in a different environment and gain better ideas. The concepts of the ERG (existence,

productivity and then rewarding them with various benefits such as growth. Growth is what

Separate Ideas
In his quote, Werner Heisenberg illustrates the idea that one cannot separate ideas into parts in order to
fully understand it, and that all things work together completing each other. By referring to the fact
that many scientists look at matter only at the atomic and quantum scale instead of examining the
object itself and losing a potential breakthrough, he emphasizes the importance of taking a step back
and looking at things from different perspectives. His statement about a better way to view and study
the universe seems like advice only for the scientific community. This is not the case, for this method
can also be applied in all aspects society.
In modern society, there are underlying issues regarding discrimination and harassment. Women are
degraded on a daily basis, racial injustice continues to grow, and conflicts between religions have
escalated to murder and war. The underlying cause of these issues lies in that people separates others
into groups then judge them for their association, before determining their character as a whole. Many,
without taking a moment to determine who the person is, instead base race, gender, or religion as a

Personality Profile: Mrs. Popov in The Brute by Anton Chekhov In The Brute, Anton Chekhov scripts
a relatively short, one act play which features two prominent and distinct main characters. Chekhov
himself was born in 1860 in Russia to a lower middle class family. At age sixteen, he was literally
abandoned by his family, an event which would shape the course of his life and writings in the years
to come. Chekhov s outlandish stories are generally classified as farces, which are defined as light,
dramatic works in which highly improbable plot situations, exaggerated characters, and often slapstick
elements are used for humorous effect (Dictionary.com/Farce). The Brute is thus typical of Chekhov s
work. Written in 1888, it was originally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Smirnov enters the story, Mrs. Popov portrays herself as an introvert who masks her true feelings.
Although Luka s intentions to change Mrs. Popov s mind are good, the way she responds to his
remarks shows that they have known each other for a long time and simply will brush off whatever
comments he makes regarding the subject. It seems as if they have had this conversation before with
the same results. Mrs. Popov s initial state reveals much about her character. Her husband was wealthy
enough to allow her to live comfortably after his death. She retained the services of the faithful butler
Luka. After her husband s death, Mrs. Popov has been a woman struggling to determine what she
wants in life. She has to convince herself to carry on mourning by continuing to look at her departed
husband s photograph. It can be implied that she has not gotten out much since the death and most
likely locked herself inside the house. In a sense, she feels liberated from the control of men, but she
knows in order to maintain that freedom she must remain without male intervention. To accomplish
this safely, she knows she must not allow herself to be friendly with any male. This is the reason for
the attitude she adopts when Mr. Smirnov walks in the room. Mr. Smirnov enters and introduces
himself to Luka, who then goes to fetch Mrs. Popov. She refuses to see the guest, stating I see no one!
(1064). This is a perfect example of Mrs. Popov s attempt to keep herself isolated

  • 2. The Poverty Trap Of Africa Christian Deeter Mr. Andrews English 11 AP 22 October 2014 The Poverty Trap Imagine a small village in Africa. What images come to mind? Is it small huts in a desolate village? Or how about exotic animals? The truth is that although some of these descriptions are accurate, they tend to leave out the pain and suffering of people. Every day 21,000 children die throughout different parts of the world (Shah). These deaths are the result of poverty as well as the conditions that come with it. Being in poverty is so much more than just not having money. Hunger, lack of resources, and wars plague developing countries, all of which have to do with poverty. Around 870 million people in the world are severely undernourished ( 2013 World Hunger). With 7.1 billion people living in the world this means that 1 in 8 of them aren t getting enough food to sustain what their bodies need (2013 World Hunger). Not surprisingly though 852 million of the hungry live in developing countries (2013 World Hunger). What causes the developing countries to be so far behind the rest of the world when it comes to lacking the basic resources needed by every human being? Dictionary.com defines a developing country as a country having a standard of living well below that possible with financial or technical aid (Dictionary). Looking at this definition, it s easy to understand why world hunger isn t its own problem, but connected to the poverty levels. There s a saying that goes money makes the world ... • 3. Better Than Revenge A warm evening breeze blew through Reese Todd s short blonde hair as she took long strides towards the stadium. Knowing that the roads were blocked, she walked through the palm tree lined streets. Never had she dared explore this city even though it was only about 75 miles from her vacation home in Cabo Frio. The crowd grew denser as she found it harder to keep moving at a constant pace and ended up squeezing through any space she could find to get ahead. As she neared the field, screams of excitement filled her ears, but later, those would have a different meaning. The doors flew open to the security checkpoint and she was able to pick up her pace. The savory smell of buttery popcorn and hot dogs blended perfectly with the sweet aromas of cotton candy and soda. The guard at the door ushered her to the side after looking through her bag. He pulled out the gun from within and started to say into his walkie talkie, Fellas, I think we ve found Mr. X, but not before Reese could pull out her badge and, after careful examination, was waved through. • 4. Everything We Know To Get Started Essay How did everything that we know today get started? The beginning of everything, the big bang, the idea that the universe was suddenly born and is not infinite. Up to the middle of the 20th century most scientist thought the universe as infinite and ageless, until Einstein s theory of relativity gave us a better understanding of gravity and Edwin Hubble discovered that galaxies are moving apart from one another in a way that fits previous predictions. In 1964 by accident cosmic background radiation was discovered in relic of the early universe, which together with other observational evidence made the big bang the accepted theory in science. Since then improved technology in science like the Hubble telescope has given us a pretty good picture of the big bang and the structure of the cosmos. Recent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Finally there was light! Okay but what about that part we didn t talk about? What happened at the beginning? This part can be defined as the big bang. We don t know at all what happened here; at this point our tools break down. Natural laws stop making sense, time itself becomes wibbly wobbly. To understand what happened here, we need a theory the unifies Einstein s relativity and quantum mechanics, something countless scientist are working on right now. But this leaves us with lots of unanswered questions. Were there universes before our own? Is this the first and only universe? What started the big bang, or did it occur naturally based on laws that we don t understand yet? We don t know, and maybe we never will. But what we don know is that the universe as we know it started here and gave birth to particles, galaxies, stars, the earth, and you. Since we ourselves are made of dead stars, we are not separate from the universe; we are part of it. You could even say that we are the universe s way of experiencing itself. So lets keep on experiencing it, until there are know more questions to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Support Language Development There are many factors which can aid language development, particularly through writing (Watts et al., 2013). Jones and Coffey (2013) identified that writing should be developed procedurally through copying, initially at word level to learn spellings and develop familiarisation with vocabulary and individual letters. Before then progressing to phrase level and on to sentences. It is thought that through copying the children are beginning to memorise the vocabulary and can help them to engrain key sentence structures, as they pay close attention to the individual words and spellings. Macaro (2006) has also identified that copy writing is often used as a way of remembering spellings for new target vocabulary. Hurrell (1999) criticises the motion of copy writing: as it gives the children too many things to focus on. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is a very difficult task especially in a foreign language with differing word structures and sentence conventions. Another criticism of copy writing is that children often make assumptions that copy writing is easy which means they do not necessarily pay full attention, meaning they make careless mistakes which result in the little recall of the vocabulary (Macaro, 2006). Alternative activities such as word searches, crosswords and gap filling exercises, as outlined by Kirsch (2008), encourage the children to focus on each individual letter, which thus supports the memorisation of their spellings. It also encourages the ability to identify common grammatical structures and raises phonetic awareness. It is important for children to improve their phonetic awareness when learning to write in a foreign language alongside being allowed to make mistakes without fear of second language anxiety, as outlined by Levine ... Lermontov s usage of chance and coincidence as the mode of expression of fate can be seen explicitly in Princess Mary and The Fatalist, both short stories from Pechorin s journal. In Pyatigorsk, Pechorin encounters an old acquaintance of his, Grushnitsky, who Pechorin secretly dislikes despite his veil of friendship. Pechorin, now anxious at the probability of his survival, loses the toss and thus stations himself on the edge of the cliff. Pechorin, now doubting that he will survive, gazes upon Grushnitsky with a degree of aristocratic fear, waiting for Grushnitsky to shoot. However as Grushnitsky stands just six paces from the unarmed Pechorin, he loses his resolve to kill and exclaims, I can t do it (Lermontov 123). Yet he turns back toward Pechorin and fires capriciously, merely grazing Pechorin s knee and causing him no harm. Knowing that Grushnitsky s second did not load his pistol, Pechorin has the pistol loaded and proceeds to kill the unrepentant Grushnitsky. Chance and Coincidence are thus used by Lermontov as the mode of expression of Fate in Princess Mary. It was not fated for Pechorin to die at the hand of Grushnitsky, thus chance compelled Grushnitsky to lose his will to kill Pechorin. Additionally, chance causes Grushnitsky s random shot at Pechorin to merely graze Pechorin s leg. Because Pechorin was not predestined to die in this duel, everything unfolded precisely the way it needed to in order to insure Pechorin s continued well being. Conversely, the events of the duel occurred in such a way that assured Grushnitsky s death, illustrating his predestination to die during the duel. Art equals something that is beautiful then it is true and leads the person experiencing it, to the good. While this may be the classical definition of art it is not quite accurate. To think that something is true and good just because it is beautiful is not right. There are three critiques of this definition which define art in a different light. Why You Should Not Stand Without A Thesis In the same way that a house, gorgeously designed and elegantly decorated as it may be, cannot stand without a solid foundation, so can a college essay not stand without a thesis statement. Of course, facts and the way in which they are presented are vital to whatever point a writer is trying to make, but without a central foundation to link the arguments, all one can hope to present is a collection of various points jumbled together in an futile attempt to grasp some sense of reason. A thesis is precisely that foundation; a crucial statement that tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the paper , according to Writing Center. Since the thesis presents the central arguments of an essay, it must be corroborated by the rest of the author s work, otherwise it will not suffice to convince a professor of the matters it addresses. In addition to being the cornerstone of the essay, Aims says that a thesis states why the essay is important and worth reading . Certainly, a thesis may be well constructed to inform the reader about the subject of the paper. However, if it is not captivating and fails to provide the reader with a good reason as to why he or she should spend their time learning about the matters of the essay, the writer has already made a fatal flaw since the reader will begin the essay uninterested. ... Ethnic Nationalism Source Of Community Of Fear Essay Ethnic Nationalism Source of Community of Fear Nationalism, according to the most widely accepted definitions of, is the doctrine that the state and the nation should be congruent. However, there is much more to add to the definition of nationalism today in connection to the ethnic and civil society. The definition of nationalism depends on its context. The typology of nationalism defines its strength and/or weakness of the relationship among the community in which it s defined. While civil nationalism accepts people for who they are in the unique condition that they accept the country s constitution, ethnic nationalism goes beyond and requires that the community should share a common culture which can be raced, ethnic group, language or religion. There are many explanations in resonating for why ethnic nationalism is an exclusive National project (according to Igatieff). Despite the urgency of this issue, Scholars have until recently not addressed the question of accommodation of communities regarding ethnic nationalism. • 26. Gary Paulsen s Nightjohn In 1993, Gary Paulsen wrote the book Nightjohn. Nightjohn is a book set in the 1850s, during slavery. It shows the thoughts and views of a twelve year old girl named Sarny. Sarny is a black slave girl, who is uneducated, malnourished, and living life the best she can. Suddenly, a man by the name of Nightjohn is brought to the plantation. Sarny traded tobacco for learning the alphabet from Nightjohn. Nightjohn ran away one night, and was thought to never return, but actually he created a hidden, underground school. Nightjohn could have been inspired by two interviews, Uncle Billy McCrea s and Walter Calloway s. Nightjohn was influenced by real slave interviews. Method Acting The Magic Touch of the Method Actor Method acting allows actors to go beyond the conventional and practical way to act and make the work more human, more alive, more exciting, more amusing, and more entertaining. According to its critics, Method acting counteracts the original form of acting because the actor concentrates more on himself rather than the development of the character. Despite this claim, Method acting continues to be the key technique actors use to create in themselves the thoughts and feelings of their characters, so as to develop convincing performances. Evoked by Constantin Stanislavski at the Moscow Art Theatre in the early 20th century, Method acting quickly spread on to the stage and screen at the end of the 40s and early 50s and has reconstructed what is required of the actor. ... Stanislavski wanted a stage where his audience would be so involved forgetting they were an audience, and they would believe they were there at the time and place the play was set (Hirsch, and Bell 6). With this, Stanislavsky created an ideal system where actors practiced techniques that would later be proven to be effective on stage and screen. Stanislavski s based his entire system heavily on Anton Chekhov s work ( Constantin Stanislavsky 4). Stanislavsky realized he was in love with acting that had no laws, which caused him to create what was first known as the Stanislavsky system ; Now known as the Method. This movie was inspired by Bobby Vinton s cover of the song Blue Velvet that was released in 1963. In the film, David Lynch showed stylization through the opening and closing montages, as well as the ear of Denmark. Another stylized moment seen within this film is through the odd connection between Booth and Lincoln. Blue Velvet is a cult hit dealing with violence, sex, and kidnapping, all being glorified. The ending of the movie symbolized peace in my opinion. Despite the disease, Jeffery put inside her and her conflicting facial expression, Dorothy can go back to living her normal, American dream. The primal scene is focused on Jeffery coming of age. Many times throughout the movie, sexualized scenes are shown. A specific scene was at the beginning of the movie when Jeffery s dad begins to have a stroke while watering the grass. As he falls, the nozzle of the garden hose is right where his crotch is. According to Professor McBride, this is necessary for the dog to continuously pound on him as it instinctively barks at and bites the streaming water. This scene and set up shows how animalistic these attacks are. During this scene, a young child sees this animalistic outbreak, which relates back to a Freudian assumption. Enzymes bind temporarily to one or more of the reactants of the reaction they catalyze. In doing so, they lower the amount of activation energy needed and thus speed up the reaction. But there is no oxidation so no speedy release of products. The inhibition is called competitive because if you increase the ratio of succinic to malonic acid in the mixture, you will gradually restore the rate of catalysis. At a 50:1 ratio, the two molecules compete on roughly equal terms for the binding (=catalytic) site on the enzyme. Factors Affecting Enzyme Action [IMAGE]The activity of enzymes is strongly affected by changes in pH and temperature. Each enzyme works best at a certain pH (left graph) and temperature (right graph), its activity decreasing at values above and below that point. This is not surprising considering the importance of * tertiary structure (i.e. shape) in enzyme function and * noncovalent forces, e.g., ionic interactions and hydrogen bonds, in determining that shape. Examples: * the protease pepsin works best as a pH of 1 2 (found in the stomach) while * the protease trypsin is inactive at such a low pH but very active at a pH of 8 (found in the small intestine as the bicarbonate of the pancreatic fluid neutralizes the arriving stomach contents). His use of research as well as controversial views really invigorates the reader and convinces him to think more deeply about his views of pain and the pain experience. Ultimately, the only certain virtues of the home lobotomy and slow heating methods are comparative, because there are even worse/crueler ways people prepare lobster. (63). Wallace also argues the point that our pursuit of cooking lobster humanely is rather pointless when most of the world outside of America cruelly breaks the lobsters apart while they are alive and cook them. Regarding the status and importance of grammar teaching, a variety of opinions have been made. Batstone (1994) states that language without grammar would be chaotic: countless words without the indispensable guidelines for how they can be ordered and modified (p. 4). More vividly, Wang (2010) makes two similes. She compares grammar to the frame of a house, which is a decisive factor to ensure the solidness of it. Meighan suggests seven kinks of teachers beliefs about learners: resisters, receptacles, raw materials, clients, partners, individual explorers and democratic explorers. Unlike the first three concepts which focus on teachers, the last four require learners active involvement (as cited in William Burden, 2000). In Miss Wong s teaching approach, a PPP model (i.e., Presentation, Practice and Production) is generally adopted. She firstly presents target grammatical structure of passive voice. Then students do some exercises along with teacher s answer checking. However, it seems the final production step is omitted, resulting in students lacking opportunities to apply the knowledge into other contexts. From her instruction, we can see Miss Wong tends to regard her students as receptacles that are required to absorb the items she transmits. What the instruction concerns is whether students can transform sentences from active to passive or vice verse from a structural level, which is a typical example of a ...
