This document provides an introduction to Twitter and advice on how to use it effectively for academic purposes. It recommends setting up a Twitter account and following colleagues. Tweeting about new publications and using hashtags can help increase visibility and engagement. Twitter can be used to reach external audiences, alongside blogging, and can be incorporated into teaching by adding a Twitter feed to Blackboard. Useful links are also provided on how to use Twitter for research, teaching, and impact activities.

“To focus our anxiety on the technology is to ignore its
function: the simple art of communicating and connecting
with other people, and the pleasure of doing so. If an
academic can talk to a colleague or a friend, they already
know how and why to tweet. No further guidance is
necessary”
