5. The Panoptic Gaze and the Discourse of
Academic Integrity – Matt Acevedo
6. “Academic integrity”
responsibilizing students to act in ways that are expected by the institution
relates to “cheating” and “plagiarism,” particularly in relation to high stakes
assessments
limited responsibility for faculty and instructors

9. How the discourse of academic integrity frames
students
“cheating has become one of the major problems in education today” (Singhal
(1982, p. 775)
Cheating in college is an “epidemic” (Haines, Diekhoff, LaBeff, and Clark,
1986, p. 342); factors that prompt cheating behaviors include student
immaturity, lack of student commitment to academics, and a “neutralizing
attitude” that justifies their immoral actions to themselves and others.
“College faculty members face a continual battle to maintain integrity in their
classrooms” (Manly, Leonard, and Riemenschneider, 2015, p. 579)

10. Reframing of academic integrity
institutions and institutional agents themselves should “do the right thing”
inverts the responsibilization for its creation and maintenance from students to
us (teachers, administrators, faculty developers, institutional agents)
faculty, as the primary conduits of power and bearers of authority in academic
environments, should design learning environments that do not cause the
creation of cheaters
