Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in the late 1980s and early 1990s while working at CERN, a physics lab. He wrote the initial code that defined the foundation of the web, including Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). The web then grew exponentially as more people and organizations used it. By the mid-1990s, usage had increased 1000-fold and people began discussing bringing the web into homes. Berners-Lee continues working to keep the web open and accessible to all through his work at the World Wide Web Consortium.
