Interview with the Web‟s
        Creator

REVIEW OF ARTICLE BY CHRIS OAKES
           JUDITH DYCK
            COMM 506
1945
Vannevar Bush writes about “Memex”which could linksbetween documents on microfiche

A Little 1960s
Doug Engelbart “prototypes” a system (NLS) that does hypertext browing, editing, email, etc.
The word hypertext is used by Ted Nelson in 1965.
History of the 1980
World Wide Tim Berners-Lee writes a program “which allows links to be made between arbitrary nodes”, each of
which had a title and two-way, typed links.

Web 1989/1990
Tim Berners-Lee proposed the global hypertext project in 1989 and in 1990, his boss okayed a project
allowing him to write the system.

                 1991 - 1993
The project was released to users and various gateways and mailing lists, etc. began. By December, the
project was presented at a conference called Hypertext‟91.

                 1992 - 1993
A series of technical advances were made and use of the internet, as well as new nodes and protocols
continued to be released. In the interview, Berners-Lee calls the growth over this time exponential and
says that until 1993, he and presumably others were never certain that the growth wouldn‟t stop, or
that the Web wouldn‟t fragment into different systems which weren‟t well connected.

                 1994
Accessibility spreads beyond institutions and people begin to talk about bringing the Web into homes.
People start leaving the research institutes to start dotcom companies, but Berners-Lee continues to
work in public institutions. The Web wasn‟t seamless; different browsers used different versions of
HTML. The International WWW Conference Committee is founded to guide the Web. Usage grew
1000 times from that recorded only three years earlier.
He really did invent it.

 The internet „Big Bang‟
 Berners-Lee coded its DNA
   Wrote the software
 Guarded the gates to keep the Web open
 Maintained the vigil while others left in search of gold
 The article clearly lays out what he accomplished, in his
  own words:
 Wrote the code and specs and documentation for how clients and
servers could talk to one another and share information, even if they
spoke different languages and were separated by vast distances
 Built on the work of many others, but it was his “Ah ha”
Berners-Lee‟s Vision and Philosophy

 Wanted researchers to be able to “easily and
  automatically combine their knowledge”
 Saw the web as a “force for social change and
  individual creativity” (Harper book blurb)
 Believes in accessibility
 Created the World Wide Web Consortium to ensure the Web
      stayed accessible
       Made it non-profit
 For him, it‟s the idea that is important, not monetization

 It‟s supposed to be fun and interactive
 Not just putting things on a web site, but instead, participating
Berners-Lee – The Man

 Harper calls him a “low profile genius”
 Eschews the trapping of fame
 Agrees that he invented it, but doesn‟t want to be celebrity
because of its damaging effects on private life
 Irony is that the web fuels the cult of the celebrity
  and fame/infamy we live in
Questions and Challenges

 What should the Web fundamentally be?
 How do we keep the Web accessible to everyone?
 How do we ensure people can collaborate and ensure
 compatibility?
 The fight against fragmentation and restricted access and use
 How do we keep it fun and creative and as wonderful
 as people are?
Comments & Questions

“THE WEB IS NOT DONE! THERE ARE A LOT
OF THINGS THAT ARE NOT EASY TO WRITE
IN AN AFTERNOON. THERE ARE THINGS
THAT ARE GOING TO TAKE A LONG TIME.”
       SIR TIM BERNERS-LEE (1999)

Editor's Notes

  1. I’m going old school – welcome to my old friend the PowerPointIt’s fitting – this is an old school article written in 1999, less than ten years after Berners-Lee wrote the programming that “allows links to be made between arbitrary nodes’ , each with a title and two way links (A Little history of the world wide web)
  2. It’s actually amazing that one person really did conceptualize and write the DNA code for the internet.I didn’t really think about that and even when I began to read the article, I was a bit skeptical. What’s even more amazing is that he did so because it was the right thing to do. More than anything, that’s what this article tells us – that the way that the internet operates, with its ability to support not only Apple and IBM and Microsoft and web banking and my ability to order a pizza on Friday night, but all the other almost infite number of other uses being made of it. And it does so with a relatively low cost of entry, and a cost which continues to drop and its use continues to spread more widely and penetrate more deeply into our lives. This article in some ways is what Dr. Curry would call a bullseye article:Gives us insight into Berners-Lee’s philosophy and belief system that still guides the web Demonstrates that it is no accident that the internet operates as it doesImagine if the project had started at the Pentagon or in North Korea? The article describes a narrativeThe hero slaves away in relative obscurity in his laboratory somewhere in the AlpsHas a eureka moment and begs his master for the materials to make it a realityAfter much begging, his fat cat master grants him leave to tryOthers begin to gather as its clear the hero has a great ideaSome of them think, if I can only control this, then I will be rich richrich! But the faithful hero tends the flame and repels the worst of the attacks, so that the dream stays alive
  3. Still answering the questions and challenges raised by Berners-Lee in the article some 13 years later.
