Interview With A Dentist
Introduction Dentistry is concerned with the health problems that relate to teeth, mouth, and the
gums; it deals with correction and care of dental diseases. These aspects define the work of a dentist
which relates to that of other healthcare providers such as physicians and nurses. Dentists are
involved in diagnosing and treatment of mouth tissue problems. In addition, they contribute to
preventive care; they advise the patients on how to ensure good oral hygiene, instruct them on the
tight diet and the best ways to brush their teeth. They also perform surgeries on the gums and
supporting bones. In summary, the activities of a dentist include an examination of patients' teeth,
filling cavities, repair of teeth that are fractured and removal of decayed teeth. Indeed, oral health
contributes to the general well–being of an individual, and thus, dentists play an integral role in the
delivery of health care. Dentistry involves a lot of dynamics, thus in order to understand the
dynamics, the following is an interview with Dr. Richard Anthony, a dentist working in his own

My host pointed out that he interacted with the doctors working in the unit and inquired what
dentistry was all about and its significance. It is through the queries that he realized that just like the
other health professionals, dentists play a critical role in the provision of health care to patients. He
also realized that many people could not access dental care. Thus, these revelations and his long
term interest to make a difference in the world convinced him that dentistry was the best career for
him. Also, Anthony learned that the work of a dentist was both an art and science. A science in that
it deals with the health of the people and art because sometimes dentists are required to design
models for replacing removed teeth, a common practice in cosmetic

Dentist Accomplishments
Dr. Akhil Reddy is a professional dentist and a leading practitioner at MB2 Dental. MB2 Dental is
an outfit whose mission is to supply affordable, quality healthcare opportunities to people of all
means. It is a dental service firm that offers dentists the resources and capacity to practice in many
parts of the United States. This institution was founded by Dr. Chris Steven Villanueva, DMD in
2009. Its basis is the idea that dentists practice better when performing on a solid affiliation, and this
is largely what it does. Today, it has over 75 employees and 60 dental offices spread across the
country.
Born in Lubbock, Texas, Dr. Reddy grew up pretty much as your ordinary kid, struggling at school
and becoming interested in soccer, scouting and was a member of the Red Cross. The growing
Reddy knew that he wanted, a profession that would require him a hands–on application, and
dentistry was an excellent choice. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At this institution, he earned a B.S. in Biological Sciences. He swiftly joined the doctorate class in
the same institution, securing himself Honors in Doctor of Dental Surgery degree, at 23 years of age.
Upon graduation, Dr. Reddy chose to head back to Dallas, Texas, where he started practice. Since
then, he has been part of dentistry. At some point in his career, he expanded his reach to include a
blended provision of dental services to patients at all levels. This action is what has rendered him an
influential member of MB2 Dental.
Apart from the dentist profession, Dr. Akhil Reddy gives time for a good wine tasting. Dr. Reddy
has made it his purpose in life to look for good wine varieties for years now. The self–confessed
oenophile has become a wine connoisseur with a palate for great flavors and masterful wine
production. Dr. Reddy has a broad knowledge of the great wines and a knack for finding good

A Career As A Dentist
Many children, teens and even adults suffer insecurity from having crooked teeth. In the dental field,
people who major in Orthodontics specialize in straightening their patients' teeth using braces to
help them feel confident in their smiles. Even after the braces are put on their patients, dentists are
required to check up on them often to make sure they are doing what they are supposed to be doing.
Another career I will be researching is Kindergarten teaching because I enjoy being around small
children and have much patience in dealing with their problems.
Dentist always do their job indoors in a dental clinic. They are constantly in physical contact with
their patients while working on the inside of their mouths. Because of this, they are required to wear
latex gloves and glasses to protect their hands from the bacteria of the mouth and their eyes from
anything that could possibly be spat by their patients ("Dentists"). Being a dentist means one needs
to be able to know how to socialize and work in groups while also knowing how to be independent
and work on one's own.
What is required to be a dentist is a high school diploma, 4 years in college for a bachelor's degree,
4 years in dental school, and 2 years in a post doctoral program devoted to the study of orthodontics.
("Dentists"). This will cost about $41,800 each year ("Dentists"). In order to become an orthodontist,
one needs "a strong background in math and science" ("Dentists"). Advanced courses that could give

question in which my expert opinion was requested was whether there were any dentist that were
submitting sequential claims? In order to properly analyze this data set I needed to use a pivot table.
After setting up the pivot table as follows: dates as rows, dentist as columns, and having the claim
date in the value section. By setting my pivot table up in this fashion I was able to see how many
claims were made by the dentist each day. Afterwards, I hid the dentist that had fewer than 10
claims. With the remaining dentist I looked at each dentist

My First Day At Excelsis Root Canal Specialties Essay
I remember my first day at Excelsis Root Canal Specialties. I was beyond scared and nervous. This
job was my first full time position I have had. To be honest I, never really pictured myself working
in the dental field. I was terrified of the dentist as a child. At that time, I was a newly divorced single
mother of two who had just moved back home with her parents. I was going through a rough patch
and needed a job to survive. I started searching online and applied everywhere. I remember getting
the phone call from the office manager for my interview. I immediately started going through my
closet to find something clean and professional for my interview. I also had to figure what who
would watch my kids while I was working. I ended up trying an in home daycare for my oldest for a
little bit which didn't work out. They both ended up staying with my parents. After I attended the
interview, I was confident in myself that I would be called back for the position. In the beginning, I
was walking on eggshells afraid to make the wrong move. It was around 7:30 in the morning before
any of the patients had arrive. I was introduced to all the coworkers. After that, I was shown to my
desk. The office manager was the person who trained me. We started going over how to check
patients in, answer phones, and verify insurances. When the first patient came in, I felt like a little
mouse in a huge church hall. Whenever I tried to say something, I stumbled across my words.

Dentist Application Essay
As a second time applicant, I have gained experience working in both general dentistry and in
specialty dental practices. Working part–time alongside a general dentist gave me the opportunity to
do dental charting, prepare instruments, and provide instructions and advice on brushing and
flossing techniques to patients. I have since developed a habit of taking detailed notes and drawings
of the surgery in my own journal to reinforce my learning. At the office, I noticed that a lot of
patients walk into the office with pain that even interrupts their daily lives. In many of the cases, the
handiwork of a dentist provided the patients immediate help by relieving them from pain. My
observations and experiences working in a dental office have taught me these rewarding moments,
which have solidified my goal to become a dentist.
Furthermore, I explored many specialty practices, such as oral surgery, periodontics, and
endodontics, which allowed me to observe many different courses of treatment. Luckily, this
shadowing opportunity opened the door to a position working at Berkeley Orinda Oral Surgery.

assistants, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

allows to reach out to the greater public. The help that I could provide to those communities were
limited without professional skills, but I would like to go back and help in the most needed regions

of is that you will get the best kinds of information on the internet. Most of the dentists today are
knowledgeable and understand that the internet is an effective marketing platform and therefore

Pediatric Dentists
Pediatric dentists work with younger children in need of oral care through creating a friendly and
comfortable environment. In an interview, Adam Shisler, DDS, explains the daily life of a pediatric
dentist. The dentist and staff begin the day at 8:30 AM by going over the game plan and relevant
charts for the day. Then, they begin check ups, appointments, and in office sedations until the
afternoon when they take an hour to an hour and half lunch break. After this break, the practice
resumes their work in the office until 5:00 or 5:30 in the evening. The schedule that comes along
with dentistry tends to stay flexible, with hours that dentists may schedule to their own, personal
preference (Shisler). The fact that Pediatric dentists work specifically with children, makes this field
of dentistry different from any other type. Anyone who has an interest in dentistry as well as

Dr. Thomas O'Leary, DDS, explains that in order to succeed, a dentist must genuinely care about his
or her patients and their well beings. He believes that all dentists must see their role as helping and
serving the community and that while the income aspect has its benefits, none of it has any value if
the dentist has not helped his or her patient. Aside from the moral characteristics that dentists must
posses in order to have a successful career, a dentist must also practice certain habits. One could
describe a dentist as a meticulous person, a perfectionist, and a neat worker. Many tasks in dentistry
require precision and perfected motor skills when working with small tools in the confined space of
a mouth. Dr. O'Leary also believes that in general, dentists must have the willpower to work hard for
what they want (O'Leary). If a dentist can excel in each of these areas, he or she will have a lucrative

Dentist Be Damned
There are several shocking truths on oral hygiene that are not familiar to many people, some of
which has been shared by Alice Barnes, the author of the revolutionary and new program called
"Dentist Be Damned".
It is important to note that you are NOT expected to brush your teeth after absorbing an acidic or
sugary food. If you do this, you will be damaging your enamel which will make your enamel wear
out probably result to cavities. By taking in acidic and sugary foods your enamel will become so soft
and weak, hence brushing it at this state will result to your enamel thinning and wearing out.
Ensure that you brush your teeth gently using the toothbrush; most people do not know that by
brushing their teeth aggressively, they are wearing out ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These type of toothpaste are known to contain bleach and other chemicals which are too strong for
everyday use, however, many people use them on a daily basis. By using this type of toothpaste for
a longer period of time, you will dangerously destroy your teeth's enamel which will make your
teeth sensitive. Make sure you avoid any teeth–whitening or stain–removal toothpaste if you have
sensitive teeth.
Alice also advised people to avoid the use of baking soda on their teeth; this is mainly because
baking soda is quite dangerous and can damage and weaken the teeth's enamel. Although, baking
soda may seem safe but when you apply it to your teeth, it can be compared to grinding your teeth
against sandpaper.
You should be aware of likely hazards if you have amalgam–based fillings. This is mainly because
amalgam–based fillings contain mercury which is very toxic to humans. It is important to check
them often in the case of a leakage or any other thing. You might end up being lethargic if you have
a broken amalgam–based filling which could lead to weak immune systems and other unwanted side
effects. Due to the dangerous effect of amalgam–based fillings and its side effects, many countries

The Struggles Of Bad Customer Service
The Struggles of Bad Customer Service In the medical industry, customer service is a very
important thing. As a customer and a new patient, I expect to walk into an office and be treated with
the same respect as the next person in line. About two weeks ago, I went into the oral surgeon's
office and was looking around to see a tiny, but crowed waiting room. I came into this office with
high expectations, for my sister had just gotten her wisdom teeth removed in this office with
"exceptional service'', as my mother put it. So I looked up at the receptionist's desk and found
myself placed as the second person in line. There I stood, waiting in line for over twenty minutes! It
felt like it was taking forever because there was a gentleman in front of me who didn 't have his
referrals. But order for him to proceed with an appointment, he needed the referrals. So the
receptionist, decided to put her time into looking for his paperwork. Thankfully, while she's looking
into it, she calls the next person in line. This happens to finally be my turn! I quickly proceeded to
the receptionist's desk, to present my insurance cards. The reason why I have two insurance cards
instead of just one is because I have Hodgkin's Lymphoma. That means I have a secondary
insurance listed under the state's welfare policies for 'disabled children. Although I am eighteen, the
policy allows me to stay on until I'm Nineteen for my medical bills can get extremely expensive. At

Personal Narrative : The Dreadful Day At The Dentist
The Dreadful Day at the Dentist It began just like any other day. I woke up, got out of my bed, and
went downstairs for breakfast. I was more tired than usual. I spent the previous night playing
computer games and watching cartoons. I was greeted by my mom and dad in the kitchen. They
seemed more happy and lively than they typically are in the mornings. I sat in a chair in the kitchen
and waited for my mom to finish making me breakfast. "Good morning," my mom said, "How're
you feeling." I was a little bit surprised that she would ask that because my parents were usually
very quiet in the mornings. "Um, good I guess," I replied hesitantly. "Great," she chirped, "Because
you have a big day ahead of you." "Wait what?" I said confused. "Yeah, I have to run some errands
and you have to come with me." My nine year old self was caught off guard with this idea because I
was never invited to go shopping with my mom. I was also not very interested in shopping and
would much rather just stay at home and play with my LEGO's. "But I don't want to," I whined. "If
you go with me then we'll get ice cream afterwards," she persuaded. "Ok fine, I'll go." She put a
plate of bacon, eggs, and toast on the table in front of me. I ate the whole thing in the matter of
seconds and went upstairs to change out of my pajamas. I wasn't very excited to shop with my mom,
but it was all ok because I would get ice cream after it. I got dressed and went back downstairs. My

Analyses of a Career as a Dentist
Dentists are often thought of as people to be feared. Most people try to put off going to the dentist
until their teeth hurt so much that they have no choice but to visit the feared dental office. Waiting
for pain in the mouth or gums before visiting a dentist is one of the worst things a person can do.
Paul J. Flaer, et al. observes, "Fear in approaching the dental visit may be generated by psychosocial
factors such as history of bad experience(s) at the dentist and by the effect of poor representations of
dental treatment in the media" (104). If more people could get over their dentophobia they might
have better oral health and probably better overall health. Many people do not realize how important

Then the dentist has to fill the caries (cavities). There are two types of fillings being used in most
dental offices. The metal amalgam that looks silver in the mouth and the composite that appears
white on the tooth. The location and severity of the cavity determines what type of filling should be
used. Usually shots to numb the mouth are used before the drilling begins. Some dentist use
laughing gas to dull the pain of the needed work. Dentist need steady hands and good depth
persecution when drilling a patient's teeth. Dentists also need to be able to take care of more serious
problems such as root canals, crowns, wisdom teeth, and making dentures. These procedures are
more challenging and require preparation during the Dental School and clinical training years. Some
dentists specialize as dental surgeons. A dental surgeon's duties include tooth extraction, root canals,
and crowns. Orthodontists are the branch of dentists that most often make dentures and putting
braces on teeth to straighten the bite. Dentists must also do a lot of paper work. This can be a boring
task but is very important. Keeping good records for the patients, filling out insurance claims, and
the necessary governmental regulations is of the utmost importance. No task the dentist has to
perform should be taken lightly. Work environment Dentists usually work with others in a dental
office. The dentist office environment should be a welcoming one to help alleviate the fear

Descriptive Essay About My Cousin
Compassionate, peaceful, respectful, big–hearted, humorous were several of the qualities that I
loved about him. I admired his drive for pursuing his dream of becoming a mechanic, his laidback
and stress–free way of life, and his motto to live life to the fullest. His name was Jean Vital–many
referred to him as Daniel–and he was my cousin.
On the morning of October 1, 2016, I learned that my cousin had passed away. It had felt like living
nightmare that I could not seem to wake up from. I vividly remember the events that led up to
moment I discovered I had lost my loved one. I woke up early that Saturday to attend my family's
annual dentist appointment. As I waited in the waiting room for my mother and sister to complete
their visit, I overheard my brother shout "What!" in response to a text message he received that
stated that Daniel had been shot. Out of disbelief, he quickly rushed out of the dentist's office to call
Daniel himself. Detective Parker answered. He mentioned that he could not disclose Daniel's
condition over the phone and asked if it was possible for the next of kin to meet with him. When my
brother informed the family, I immediately known that death was a possibility, but I could not bring
myself to accept it. Instead, I latched on to the hope that he may have just been in critical condition.

because of a gunshot wound to the buttocks. Based on his analysis of the

I managed to salvage this notebook from the kitchen of a restaurant whose sign is unreadable at this

refuge in the neighborhoods to feel "at home" again. Some are settled in the cities, some are in the
mountains. The smartest people move around according to environmental and manmade threats. I
remember the day the TV in the soup kitchen I worked at was interrupted by a U.S. government
message that went along the lines of "We have spotted enemy aircrafts coming into United States

The ground started shaking and the weak buildings instantly crumbled. Fire spread across the nearby

Professionalism As A Dentist
What is a "dentist"? To some, the mere word invokes fear, to others, it is simply a person who
lectures about and "drills" teeth. To me however, a dentist is a healthcare provider that, with the
proper care and skills, is an integral part of his/her community. A dentist must apply excellence,
humanism, accountability and altruism, the four models that construct professionalism, to his/her
actions, thoughts and treatments. A dental professional's concrete knowledge and performance level
along with an understanding of the lawful rights encompassing dentistry and their ability to explain
and review these dental facets with their patients, is a few of the many ways that the four
propositions of professionalism may be expressed by a healthcare provider. With that said, I believe
professionalism as a dentist embodies the capacity to supply his/her local community with

the emotional sense, through considerate dentist–patient ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This element encompasses all four of the principles of professionalism. Even though one must
always strive to provide the highest quality care and maintain high standards, this should not be
confused with stepping outside of your competency level to do so. A provider must exhibit
accountability for their patient by accepting their limits and only provide work that they know may
bring a positive outcome. A dentist employing a humanistic approach will show compassion and
empathy for their patient, despite not being able to treat them and lastly a provider's altruistic
display should be of first concern, by putting a patient's interest over your own self–interest or

Dentist And Economy
Dentist and the Economy Dentistry is not only beneficial for the health of the patient and the
physician's financial stability, but for the economy as well. Four years of undergraduate school and
four or more years of dental school and a lifelong fulfilling career both economically and personally
is the dream of dental practitioners. Dentistry is beneficial for the economy of the United States and

Dental offices have less patients when the economy is lower and the amount of jobs that patients
hold is low. This is because when jobs are lost and money is low the patient's place priority on other
necessities like rent and food rather than on their health. Insurances are lost when job availability
goes down as most patients carry insurances through their employer. Since 2013 a great recession
has occurred that lowered the amount of patients dentist have a day or annually. According to Dr.
Roger P. Levin from Dental Economics, Americans will have less money to spend on retail and
service sector businesses, including dentistry which is estimated to last until the year 2023. This
recession will greatly affects dental offices all over the United States by lowering the demand of
dental care. Another damaging factor to dental professionals is the ever rising prices of school.
According to the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), the average debt per graduating
senior is $247,227. This high level of debt can jeopardize a new dentist's ability to choose their
preferred career path. Dentist are now graduating with large amounts of debts that affect how well

They claim that they never got a reminder call and what really frustrated me was that some of them
had an 8am appointment and I had to wake up extra early to meet them at NSC, but they cancelled. I
asked my supervisor if we could do reminders calls the day before, but she told me that NSC wants
them to be independent and reminding them the day before will make them dependent on NSC. I
honestly just want them to make their appointments or call NSC ahead of time if they are not going
to make it because some of their appointments are schedule months in advance and it is hard to get.
After the first two cancellations, I learned to just except it because overtime NSC will not be there to

Dentist Vs Orthodontist
I am personally interested in both of these careers. I have had an interest in them since I was in
middle school and started visiting the dentist and orthodontist more frequently. My orthodontist's
friendly, helpful staff always made me feel comfortable. My parents would typically scare me telling
me that the dentist is someone that many kids are afraid to see. I would also look up the top ten fears
in the world, and the dentist would be at the top of the list. However, my dentists actually made me
feel at home when I was in their office. They were sincere and always asked about my day and
comforted me if I felt the least bit of pain. These dentists would inform me on the process of which
they are performing on me and I started to take interest.

If you are diagnosed with any type of Head and Neck cancer, the last person you would think about
visiting is your dentist. Most patients are surprised when told that they will have to see a dentist

serious mouth problems before and after your radiation treatments and also helps you maintain good
oral health during and after your treatments. Dental problems such as gum disease, cavities, and

Radiation and surgery are major curative modalities with adjuvant chemotherapy for advanced

These have created fears in people and led to difficulties on gaining confidence to obtain dental care.
Moreover, the human mind is much related to stimuli and responses based on the causes of the
stimuli. Relating these to the experiment of Pavlov on the dogs and constant stimuli occasioned by
the sound of a bell that indicated a time for food, one discovers the relationship of the thought of a
visit to the dentist to the effect or the pain of it. (Coon, p.261). The conditioning of the mind to fear
as a result of a visit to the dentist would result into a fear. Smell of the hospital accompanied by the
sound of the machines used during the operation yield into fears for a number of patients. The
common smell of drugs in the hospital causes fears in many people that make them fear the whole
procedure. A sound produced by two equipments or machines used raise fear levels in some people.
In dealing with these fears, there is need to coordinate the causes with a professional approach to
handling them based on those identified in each patient. These are part of the professional
obligations of the dentists (Ozar & Sokol, p.15). Cause of fear differs from one patient to another, as
well as the solution to it. These majorly deal with the alleviation of the fear. The fear normally

Advantages Of Dentists
A severe shortage of dentists has hit rural America leaving millions of people stranded in a dental
desert. Individuals who are low–income, older adults, minorities, or those with special needs often
have a harder time accessing dental care. Rural areas of the country are more likely to have poorer
residents who are without dental insurance. These citizens must travel long distances to seek out a
dentist. Accessing adequate dental care has become a major health concern in the United States,
leaving many with tooth decay and other serious health concerns. In order to fix the broken system
of oral health care the government, states, and private sector need to come together and create new
funds for dental programs. States should consider adopting dental therapists or dental practitioners
as a way to provide general care to those living in dental deserts. The American Dental Hygienists'
Association (ADHA) has created a task force on the Advanced Dental Hygiene Practitioner (ADHP)
and with the approval from the ADHA House of Delegates, has established a scope of practice and
educational guidelines for those pursing this profession. ADHP's are a viable solution for rural
communities facing oral health barriers. These practitioners provide basic procedures and assist with
prevention of tooth decay by providing education on effective brushing habits. Rural areas of the
country need dental therapists and advanced dental hygiene practitioners because they will save
lives, reduce

Dentist Observation
The second year student I observed was very organized and passionate while helping her patient.
Since this was the last of four visits she had with her patient, she was sweet enough to purchase

than when I observed another student during my first observation.
I. Preparation: I did not come in early to watch the set up of the unit for this appointment because I
arrived an hour early in my last observation, and I feel pretty comfortable setting up and wiping

The Salary For A Dentist
Similarly, the salary for a dentist differs from one dentist to another. Dentists who own their own
practices can expect to make anywhere from $150,000 a year to possibly even $164,000 or higher
over time (Dentists: Salary). Over time pay for dentists in expected to go up since it has been on the
rise for the past decade or longer. Dentists in their first year, naturally, will not make the same
amount of money as an experienced practicing dentist will (Dentists: Salary). Notably, dentists make
much more than many other health care professionals, including pharmacists, registered nurses,
dental hygienists, and dental assistants. According to statistics, dentists tend to do better and make
more money in certain cities across the United States (Dentists: Salary). Some of these cities include
Holland, Michigan, Jacksonville, North Carolina, Nashua, New Hampshire, Rochester, New
Hampshire, and Valdosta, Georgia. In all of these cities, dentists make over $250,000 a year
(Dentists: Salary). With all of the work required of a dentist and with all of the patients that see a
dentist, it is impossible for a dentist to run an office alone. One group of people that are essential to
a dentist and to a dental office are dental hygienists. Dental hygienists work very closely aligned
with dentists for the overall health of patients (Dental Hygienists). These individuals have the
responsibility of screening patients, taking dental x–rays, removing plaque from a patient's teeth,

Trip To Ecuador Research Paper
The most impactful event in my life so far was the two week service trip I took to Ecuador with
Renbrook in june of 2015. It was a two week service trip in which we would be helping at medical
clinics and building wheelchair ramps for a school for disabled kids. I went into the trip having no
idea how much of an impact it would have on my life, and I definitely had no idea that I would
create strong bonds with people I had never even met. I came out of this trip a different person, a
better person.
The night before we left for ecuador we were invited to spend the night at Renbrook. That night was
the beginning to our bonding, we got pizza and watched a movie and everyone had a great time.
Even though we had an early morning flight the next day, we still stayed up until 12 because we
were having so much fun. The next morning was rough we had to wake up at 4 to drive to John F.
Kennedy airport. We took two flights one to Columbia and then one to Ecuador. When we got to
ecuador we first went to our hotel a small one but very nice considering we were in a third world
country. For the next week we would be bonding, going on bike rides, walking in caves, and white
water rafting. The first week was so fun and I learned so much about everyone on the trip including
some new things about myself. After the first week was over I was completely immersed in the
ecuadorian culture and the other people on the trip felt like family to me. I did not know it yet ...

Personal Statement For Dentistry
I am a naturally driven individual. I have always had an instinctual curiosity about the world around
us. My mother and father, who were both raised in rural Poland, showed me hard work and
commitment is the only way to find success in life. My mother came overseas alone to support her
family in Poland after her father passed, and my father came to the United States after living and
working on his parent's farm for ten years. My parents arrived in this country with next–to–nothing,
and fought tooth and nail to build a life and family. It is only through their perseverance that I was
able to live a healthy, happy, and fulfilling childhood. As a result of having such incredibly strong
role models, I have become a motivated, thoughtful, independent young woman. I may not have the
personal connections and family influence in the field as some other applicants, but that does not
dilute my passion to pursue a career in dentistry. My self–reliance has proved to me that I can do
anything I put my mind to, no matter who or what may stand in my way, and my parents taught me
that. It goes to show that even though I am working towards this career on my own, since I do not
have family or friends in dentistry to advise me, I am still just as dedicated to my academic and
extracurricular activities in the hopes of growing into a well–rounded woman and dentist. Upon
recollecting what convinced me to pursue dentistry, I can pinpoint it to one specific experience. I

Looking For A Dentist?
Looking for a dentist? It can be tough enough to find one that you like, that takes your insurance,
that has a decent office staff, and that is close enough to work or home so a routine cleaning doesn 't
take up your day. But we rarely give a thought to "how" dentists practice their science. It seems to
be pretty standard, after all. But holistic dentistry is another option. The way these dentists practice
their brand of is very different from the traditional model. Their claims and methods are also
controversial. Holistic dentistry seems to have begun back in the early 1900 's by Weston A. Price,

In fact, the American Dental Association (ADA) published their report on dental amalgam safety.
The report concludes that though minute amounts of mercury are released from amalgam, no health
consequences from this amount of mercury have been adequately demonstrated. It appears to be a
case where the benefit of amalgam fillings would outweigh the possible and miniscule risk of
mercury being used in the fillings. Since "60 Minutes" did a story in 1990 on the possible dangers of
amalgam fillings containing mercury, thousands of patients have sought out holistic dentists for the
removal of these fillings. Studies vary, but most of them show mixed results with benefits not
necessarily related to the removal of amalgam fillings. It has been pointed out that these holistic
dentists who engage in treating "mercury poisoning" or "metal toxicity" are not practicing dentistry,
but a form of medical practice. These same holistic dentists test for and prescribe supplements as
well, and those actions are outside the scope of dentistry practice as well. Detractors of holistic
dentistry point out that failing to make a referral to a health care practitioner in these cases is
considered negligent practice. If you have the time and money (because few insurances cover the
cost of removal of existing fillings and replacing them with porcelain) and you feel that your

Analysis Of The Poem ' The Sky Is Gray ' Essay

American Lit II

Post–Modernism Essay
"The Sky is Gray" by Ernest Gaines is a realistic example of a long epidemic has hovered over the
African American community like an dark storm cloud just waiting to burst. Personally, this story
called to me, like I was meant to read it. The mother in this short story reminds me of my own
mother. Stepping into that masculine role to show strength and provide for her family. Then,
teaching her son these harsh life lessons to ensure his survival in a society that is not welcoming to
an African American man; act rationally, not emotionally.
The story opens with the narrator that is later introduced to the reader as James, an eight year old
boy with an awful toothache. James tries his best to conceal this from his Auntie and mother,
Octavia. James truly admires his mama, however he has the misfortune awareness of the poverty
that his family suffers from. He is so gravely aware of the situation that he tries to conceal his pain
for a weeks span, only confiding in his younger sibling Ty.
Early on in the story, importance of strength and endurance is the first major theme that appears
abundantly clear in the text, when James recalls the "happier" times before his father joined the
Army and did not return from the war. Octavia would stay up later back in those days, and now she
would go to sleep immediately after a meal. James pulls from his stream of consciousness to the a

Interview With A Dentist

  • 1. Interview With A Dentist Introduction Dentistry is concerned with the health problems that relate to teeth, mouth, and the gums; it deals with correction and care of dental diseases. These aspects define the work of a dentist which relates to that of other healthcare providers such as physicians and nurses. Dentists are involved in diagnosing and treatment of mouth tissue problems. In addition, they contribute to preventive care; they advise the patients on how to ensure good oral hygiene, instruct them on the tight diet and the best ways to brush their teeth. They also perform surgeries on the gums and supporting bones. In summary, the activities of a dentist include an examination of patients' teeth, filling cavities, repair of teeth that are fractured and removal of decayed teeth. Indeed, oral health contributes to the general well–being of an individual, and thus, dentists play an integral role in the delivery of health care. Dentistry involves a lot of dynamics, thus in order to understand the dynamics, the following is an interview with Dr. Richard Anthony, a dentist working in his own private ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My host pointed out that he interacted with the doctors working in the unit and inquired what dentistry was all about and its significance. It is through the queries that he realized that just like the other health professionals, dentists play a critical role in the provision of health care to patients. He also realized that many people could not access dental care. Thus, these revelations and his long term interest to make a difference in the world convinced him that dentistry was the best career for him. Also, Anthony learned that the work of a dentist was both an art and science. A science in that it deals with the health of the people and art because sometimes dentists are required to design models for replacing removed teeth, a common practice in cosmetic ... • 3. Dentist Accomplishments Dr. Akhil Reddy is a professional dentist and a leading practitioner at MB2 Dental. MB2 Dental is an outfit whose mission is to supply affordable, quality healthcare opportunities to people of all means. It is a dental service firm that offers dentists the resources and capacity to practice in many parts of the United States. This institution was founded by Dr. Chris Steven Villanueva, DMD in 2009. Its basis is the idea that dentists practice better when performing on a solid affiliation, and this is largely what it does. Today, it has over 75 employees and 60 dental offices spread across the country. Born in Lubbock, Texas, Dr. Reddy grew up pretty much as your ordinary kid, struggling at school and becoming interested in soccer, scouting and was a member of the Red Cross. The growing Reddy knew that he wanted, a profession that would require him a hands–on application, and dentistry was an excellent choice. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At this institution, he earned a B.S. in Biological Sciences. He swiftly joined the doctorate class in the same institution, securing himself Honors in Doctor of Dental Surgery degree, at 23 years of age. Upon graduation, Dr. Reddy chose to head back to Dallas, Texas, where he started practice. Since then, he has been part of dentistry. At some point in his career, he expanded his reach to include a blended provision of dental services to patients at all levels. This action is what has rendered him an influential member of MB2 Dental. Apart from the dentist profession, Dr. Akhil Reddy gives time for a good wine tasting. Dr. Reddy has made it his purpose in life to look for good wine varieties for years now. The self–confessed oenophile has become a wine connoisseur with a palate for great flavors and masterful wine production. • 5. A Career As A Dentist Many children, teens and even adults suffer insecurity from having crooked teeth. In the dental field, people who major in Orthodontics specialize in straightening their patients' teeth using braces to help them feel confident in their smiles. Even after the braces are put on their patients, dentists are required to check up on them often to make sure they are doing what they are supposed to be doing. Another career I will be researching is Kindergarten teaching because I enjoy being around small children and have much patience in dealing with their problems. Dentist always do their job indoors in a dental clinic. They are constantly in physical contact with their patients while working on the inside of their mouths. Because of this, they are required to wear latex gloves and glasses to protect their hands from the bacteria of the mouth and their eyes from anything that could possibly be spat by their patients ("Dentists"). Being a dentist means one needs to be able to know how to socialize and work in groups while also knowing how to be independent and work on one's own. What is required to be a dentist is a high school diploma, 4 years in college for a bachelor's degree, 4 years in dental school, and 2 years in a post doctoral program devoted to the study of orthodontics. ("Dentists"). This will cost about $41,800 each year ("Dentists"). In order to become an orthodontist, one needs "a strong background in math and science" ("Dentists"). The four dentist with PO Boxes are Dentist 253093, 530853,657378, 730751, 338127. 7. The second question in which my expert opinion was requested was whether there were any dentist that were submitting sequential claims? In order to properly analyze this data set I needed to use a pivot table. After setting up the pivot table as follows: dates as rows, dentist as columns, and having the claim date in the value section. By setting my pivot table up in this fashion I was able to see how many claims were made by the dentist each day. Afterwards, I hid the dentist that had fewer than 10 claims. With the remaining dentist I looked at each dentist ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Persuasive Essay On Becoming A Dentist Someone coming at you, with white latex gloves on, the tool with a hook that twinkles with deceit in hand, and as you're dazed from the anesthetics they gave you, they ask you to smile and then ask you to "open wide" to claw at your teeth and gums. That is what I want to be doing as my job for the rest of my life, scaring kids as a dentist. That's what people see them for, but what really makes a dentist? Lots of schooling, is one for sure, but you also must have simple skills that some may be born with or others have to learn. Explaining these things and learning about these things are crucial to my education to becoming a dentist. As a dentist, you can obtain an office full of terrified kids and adults who have the privilege to see me! It's actually them being scared of the tools that I have that goes in their mouths, but same thing right? In addition to having kids being terrified of you and your tools, there are its perks. One of the perks for a dentist is that they are one of the highest paying in the healthcare department, more than a registered nurse and medical assistant combined, raking in an average of $172,350 each year, making $14,362.50 a month. Moreover, dentists will have a "growth of 18% from 2014–2024, faster than the average for all occupations." ("Summary." U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 17 Dec. 2015, www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/dentists.htm#tab–4.) It may not seem like it, but dentists have a great deal of responsibilities when it comes to taking care of their patients. Being a dentist, you are there to help people become more informed on how to properly take care of their teeth and what they must do to achieve that beautiful smile! Dentists are also there to fill any cavities you may have or extract any decay that may be upon your teeth. Those dentures that you found beside your grandpa's sink? Dentists also make those, as well as fix and save any teeth that may be cracked. They also remove teeth that may have rotted out. When I first started thinking of what I wanted to become, I simply thought that I love seeing terrified people– I mean, the smiles from everyone that walks in and out of the office that I'd have! • 11. My First Day At Excelsis Root Canal Specialties Essay I remember my first day at Excelsis Root Canal Specialties. I was beyond scared and nervous. This job was my first full time position I have had. To be honest I, never really pictured myself working in the dental field. I was terrified of the dentist as a child. At that time, I was a newly divorced single mother of two who had just moved back home with her parents. I was going through a rough patch and needed a job to survive. I started searching online and applied everywhere. I remember getting the phone call from the office manager for my interview. I immediately started going through my closet to find something clean and professional for my interview. I also had to figure what who would watch my kids while I was working. I ended up trying an in home daycare for my oldest for a little bit which didn't work out. They both ended up staying with my parents. After I attended the interview, I was confident in myself that I would be called back for the position. In the beginning, I was walking on eggshells afraid to make the wrong move. It was around 7:30 in the morning before any of the patients had arrive. I was introduced to all the coworkers. After that, I was shown to my desk. The office manager was the person who trained me. We started going over how to check patients in, answer phones, and verify insurances. When the first patient came in, I felt like a little mouse in a huge church hall. Whenever I tried to say something, I stumbled across my words. During our lunch ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Dentist Application Essay As a second time applicant, I have gained experience working in both general dentistry and in specialty dental practices. Working part–time alongside a general dentist gave me the opportunity to do dental charting, prepare instruments, and provide instructions and advice on brushing and flossing techniques to patients. I have since developed a habit of taking detailed notes and drawings of the surgery in my own journal to reinforce my learning. At the office, I noticed that a lot of patients walk into the office with pain that even interrupts their daily lives. In many of the cases, the handiwork of a dentist provided the patients immediate help by relieving them from pain. My observations and experiences working in a dental office have taught me these rewarding moments, which have solidified my goal to become a dentist. Furthermore, I explored many specialty practices, such as oral surgery, periodontics, and endodontics, which allowed me to observe many different courses of treatment. Luckily, this shadowing opportunity opened the door to a position working at Berkeley Orinda Oral Surgery. Because this was an office with four oral surgeons and more than 25 staff members and surgical assistants, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With my pre–dental student peers at UC Berkeley, I participated in Dental Education Outreach Program and a dental service trip to Panama, which gave me better insight into the realities of public health inside and outside the United States. While spending my time in Panama, I gained a true appreciation for dentistry as a profession whose work is not limited to in–office care, but one that allows to reach out to the greater public. The help that I could provide to those communities were limited without professional skills, but I would like to go back and help in the most needed regions in the world after achieving my professional goal to become a skilled clinician in dental ... • 19. Pediatric Dentists Pediatric dentists work with younger children in need of oral care through creating a friendly and comfortable environment. In an interview, Adam Shisler, DDS, explains the daily life of a pediatric dentist. The dentist and staff begin the day at 8:30 AM by going over the game plan and relevant charts for the day. Then, they begin check ups, appointments, and in office sedations until the afternoon when they take an hour to an hour and half lunch break. After this break, the practice resumes their work in the office until 5:00 or 5:30 in the evening. The schedule that comes along with dentistry tends to stay flexible, with hours that dentists may schedule to their own, personal preference (Shisler). The fact that Pediatric dentists work specifically with children, makes this field of dentistry different from any other type. Anyone who has an interest in dentistry as well as working ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dr. Thomas O'Leary, DDS, explains that in order to succeed, a dentist must genuinely care about his or her patients and their well beings. He believes that all dentists must see their role as helping and serving the community and that while the income aspect has its benefits, none of it has any value if the dentist has not helped his or her patient. Aside from the moral characteristics that dentists must posses in order to have a successful career, a dentist must also practice certain habits. One could describe a dentist as a meticulous person, a perfectionist, and a neat worker. Many tasks in dentistry require precision and perfected motor skills when working with small tools in the confined space of a mouth. Dr. O'Leary also believes that in general, dentists must have the willpower to work hard for what they want (O'Leary). Dentist Be Damned There are several shocking truths on oral hygiene that are not familiar to many people, some of which has been shared by Alice Barnes, the author of the revolutionary and new program called "Dentist Be Damned". It is important to note that you are NOT expected to brush your teeth after absorbing an acidic or sugary food. If you do this, you will be damaging your enamel which will make your enamel wear out probably result to cavities. Make sure you avoid any teeth–whitening or stain–removal toothpaste if you have sensitive teeth. Alice also advised people to avoid the use of baking soda on their teeth; this is mainly because baking soda is quite dangerous and can damage and weaken the teeth's enamel. Although, baking soda may seem safe but when you apply it to your teeth, it can be compared to grinding your teeth against sandpaper. You should be aware of likely hazards if you have amalgam–based fillings. This is mainly because amalgam–based fillings contain mercury which is very toxic to humans. It is important to check them often in the case of a leakage or any other thing. • 25. The Struggles Of Bad Customer Service The Struggles of Bad Customer Service In the medical industry, customer service is a very important thing. As a customer and a new patient, I expect to walk into an office and be treated with the same respect as the next person in line. About two weeks ago, I went into the oral surgeon's office and was looking around to see a tiny, but crowed waiting room. I came into this office with high expectations, for my sister had just gotten her wisdom teeth removed in this office with "exceptional service'', as my mother put it. So I looked up at the receptionist's desk and found myself placed as the second person in line. There I stood, waiting in line for over twenty minutes! It felt like it was taking forever because there was a gentleman in front of me who didn 't have his referrals. But order for him to proceed with an appointment, he needed the referrals. So the receptionist, decided to put her time into looking for his paperwork. Thankfully, while she's looking into it, she calls the next person in line. This happens to finally be my turn! I quickly proceeded to the receptionist's desk, to present my insurance cards. The reason why I have two insurance cards instead of just one is because I have Hodgkin's Lymphoma. That means I have a secondary insurance listed under the state's welfare policies for 'disabled children. Although I am eighteen, the policy allows me to stay on until I'm Nineteen for my medical bills can get extremely expensive. At this point, I go to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I was more tired than usual. I spent the previous night playing computer games and watching cartoons. I was greeted by my mom and dad in the kitchen. They seemed more happy and lively than they typically are in the mornings. I sat in a chair in the kitchen and waited for my mom to finish making me breakfast. "Good morning," my mom said, "How're you feeling." I was a little bit surprised that she would ask that because my parents were usually very quiet in the mornings. "Um, good I guess," I replied hesitantly. "Great," she chirped, "Because you have a big day ahead of you." "Wait what?" I said confused. "Yeah, I have to run some errands and you have to come with me." My nine year old self was caught off guard with this idea because I was never invited to go shopping with my mom. I was also not very interested in shopping and would much rather just stay at home and play with my LEGO's. "But I don't want to," I whined. "If you go with me then we'll get ice cream afterwards," she persuaded. "Ok fine, I'll go." She put a plate of bacon, eggs, and toast on the table in front of me. I ate the whole thing in the matter of seconds and went upstairs to change out of my pajamas. I wasn't very excited to shop with my mom, but it was all ok because I would get ice cream after it. Most people try to put off going to the dentist until their teeth hurt so much that they have no choice but to visit the feared dental office. Waiting for pain in the mouth or gums before visiting a dentist is one of the worst things a person can do. Paul J. Flaer, et al. observes, "Fear in approaching the dental visit may be generated by psychosocial factors such as history of bad experience(s) at the dentist and by the effect of poor representations of dental treatment in the media" (104). I admired his drive for pursuing his dream of becoming a mechanic, his laidback and stress–free way of life, and his motto to live life to the fullest. His name was Jean Vital–many referred to him as Daniel–and he was my cousin. On the morning of October 1, 2016, I learned that my cousin had passed away. It had felt like living nightmare that I could not seem to wake up from. I vividly remember the events that led up to moment I discovered I had lost my loved one. I woke up early that Saturday to attend my family's annual dentist appointment. As I waited in the waiting room for my mother and sister to complete their visit, I overheard my brother shout "What!" in response to a text message he received that stated that Daniel had been shot. Out of disbelief, he quickly rushed out of the dentist's office to call Daniel himself. Detective Parker answered. He mentioned that he could not disclose Daniel's condition over the phone and asked if it was possible for the next of kin to meet with him. When my brother informed the family, I immediately known that death was a possibility, but I could not bring myself to accept it. Instead, I latched on to the hope that he may have just been in critical condition. Fire spread across the nearby forests. I assume they were using Napalm against us. Of course I didn't tell anyone, we're all already scared enough. In fact, I kept most of my thoughts to myself. If the people living at the camp sites survived the carbon monoxide and fire, they'd come down here. Knowing the way people are in these times, anyone seeking refuge would take anything by force. To keep everyone distracted from the chaos outside, I began to introduce myself to everyone else here. "I'm Max. I don't exactly run this place, I'm just a cashier. What are your names?" Asking this was not easy. I was still a little shaky because of what happened only a few minutes ago. "I'm Eugene. I run the gun store a few blocks away. Business is not so great this time of year, being it hot and no one wants to hunt yet," replied Eugene in his pure Southern accent. • 39. Professionalism As A Dentist What is a "dentist"? To some, the mere word invokes fear, to others, it is simply a person who lectures about and "drills" teeth. To me however, a dentist is a healthcare provider that, with the proper care and skills, is an integral part of his/her community. A dentist must apply excellence, humanism, accountability and altruism, the four models that construct professionalism, to his/her actions, thoughts and treatments. A dental professional's concrete knowledge and performance level along with an understanding of the lawful rights encompassing dentistry and their ability to explain and review these dental facets with their patients, is a few of the many ways that the four propositions of professionalism may be expressed by a healthcare provider. No risk factors were discussed with the patient, but he was extremely apprehensive about his mandibular right canine. It was out of alignment and bleeds profusely whenever he brushes and flosses. All of his other teeth bleed, but not nearly as bad as that specific tooth. • 67. The Salary For A Dentist Similarly, the salary for a dentist differs from one dentist to another. Dentists who own their own practices can expect to make anywhere from $150,000 a year to possibly even $164,000 or higher over time (Dentists: Salary). Over time pay for dentists in expected to go up since it has been on the rise for the past decade or longer. Dentists in their first year, naturally, will not make the same amount of money as an experienced practicing dentist will (Dentists: Salary). Notably, dentists make much more than many other health care professionals, including pharmacists, registered nurses, dental hygienists, and dental assistants. According to statistics, dentists tend to do better and make more money in certain cities across the United States (Dentists: Salary). Some of these cities include Holland, Michigan, Jacksonville, North Carolina, Nashua, New Hampshire, Rochester, New Hampshire, and Valdosta, Georgia. In all of these cities, dentists make over $250,000 a year (Dentists: Salary). With all of the work required of a dentist and with all of the patients that see a dentist, it is impossible for a dentist to run an office alone. One group of people that are essential to a dentist and to a dental office are dental hygienists. Dental hygienists work very closely aligned with dentists for the overall health of patients (Dental Hygienists). These individuals have the responsibility of screening patients, taking dental x–rays, removing plaque from a patient's teeth, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Trip To Ecuador Research Paper The most impactful event in my life so far was the two week service trip I took to Ecuador with Renbrook in june of 2015. It was a two week service trip in which we would be helping at medical clinics and building wheelchair ramps for a school for disabled kids. I went into the trip having no idea how much of an impact it would have on my life, and I definitely had no idea that I would create strong bonds with people I had never even met. I came out of this trip a different person, a better person. The night before we left for ecuador we were invited to spend the night at Renbrook. That night was the beginning to our bonding, we got pizza and watched a movie and everyone had a great time. Even though we had an early morning flight the next day, we still stayed up until 12 because we were having so much fun. The next morning was rough we had to wake up at 4 to drive to John F. Kennedy airport. We took two flights one to Columbia and then one to Ecuador. When we got to ecuador we first went to our hotel a small one but very nice considering we were in a third world country. For the next week we would be bonding, going on bike rides, walking in caves, and white water rafting. The first week was so fun and I learned so much about everyone on the trip including some new things about myself. After the first week was over I was completely immersed in the ecuadorian culture and the other people on the trip felt like family to me. I did not know it yet ... The trip made me grateful for all the privileges I have back in the United States. To see the kids at the school moved me, for they were so happy at school, even though they had so little. The trip really made me think of how I should take every opportunity I am handed, for there are kids in other parts of the world that would do anything to have what I ... • 73. Personal Statement For Dentistry I am a naturally driven individual. I have always had an instinctual curiosity about the world around us. My mother and father, who were both raised in rural Poland, showed me hard work and commitment is the only way to find success in life. My mother came overseas alone to support her family in Poland after her father passed, and my father came to the United States after living and working on his parent's farm for ten years. My parents arrived in this country with next–to–nothing, and fought tooth and nail to build a life and family. It is only through their perseverance that I was able to live a healthy, happy, and fulfilling childhood. As a result of having such incredibly strong role models, I have become a motivated, thoughtful, independent young woman. I may not have the personal connections and family influence in the field as some other applicants, but that does not dilute my passion to pursue a career in dentistry. My self–reliance has proved to me that I can do anything I put my mind to, no matter who or what may stand in my way, and my parents taught me that. It goes to show that even though I am working towards this career on my own, since I do not have family or friends in dentistry to advise me, I am still just as dedicated to my academic and extracurricular activities in the hopes of growing into a well–rounded woman and dentist. Upon recollecting what convinced me to pursue dentistry, I can pinpoint it to one specific experience. I realized that I wanted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Looking For A Dentist? Looking for a dentist? It can be tough enough to find one that you like, that takes your insurance, that has a decent office staff, and that is close enough to work or home so a routine cleaning doesn 't take up your day. But we rarely give a thought to "how" dentists practice their science. It seems to be pretty standard, after all. But holistic dentistry is another option. The way these dentists practice their brand of is very different from the traditional model. Their claims and methods are also controversial. Holistic dentistry seems to have begun back in the early 1900 's by Weston A. Price, D.D.S. Mr. Price toured various primitive parts of the world and reached his conclusion that sugar was the cause of most decay in the world: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In fact, the American Dental Association (ADA) published their report on dental amalgam safety. The report concludes that though minute amounts of mercury are released from amalgam, no health consequences from this amount of mercury have been adequately demonstrated. It appears to be a case where the benefit of amalgam fillings would outweigh the possible and miniscule risk of mercury being used in the fillings. Since "60 Minutes" did a story in 1990 on the possible dangers of amalgam fillings containing mercury, thousands of patients have sought out holistic dentists for the removal of these fillings. Studies vary, but most of them show mixed results with benefits not necessarily related to the removal of amalgam fillings. It has been pointed out that these holistic dentists who engage in treating "mercury poisoning" or "metal toxicity" are not practicing dentistry, but a form of medical practice. These same holistic dentists test for and prescribe supplements as well, and those actions are outside the scope of dentistry practice as well. Detractors of holistic dentistry point out that failing to make a referral to a health care practitioner in these cases is considered negligent practice. If you have the time and money (because few insurances cover the cost of removal of existing fillings and replacing them with porcelain) and you feel that your ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sonier Post–Modernism Essay "The Sky is Gray" by Ernest Gaines is a realistic example of a long epidemic has hovered over the African American community like an dark storm cloud just waiting to burst. Personally, this story called to me, like I was meant to read it. The mother in this short story reminds me of my own mother. Stepping into that masculine role to show strength and provide for her family. Then, teaching her son these harsh life lessons to ensure his survival in a society that is not welcoming to an African American man; act rationally, not emotionally. The story opens with the narrator that is later introduced to the reader as James, an eight year old boy with an awful toothache. James tries his best to conceal this from his Auntie and mother, Octavia. James truly admires his mama, however he has the misfortune awareness of the poverty that his family suffers from. He is so gravely aware of the situation that he tries to conceal his pain for a weeks span, only confiding in his younger sibling Ty. Early on in the story, importance of strength and endurance is the first major theme that appears abundantly clear in the text, when James recalls the "happier" times before his father joined the Army and did not return from the war.
