INTERNSHIP REPORT ON
BUILDING CONSTRACTION PROJECTIN BRHANU
TOPIYAW CONSTRUCTION PLC BY ABEL SISAY
September
ArbaMinch, Ethiopia
Introduction
This power point discusses on my overall internship program that lasted for
about two months in the previous time.
Generally there is four main portions:-
Overall introduction and Background of the hosting company
My overall internship experience
Benefits I gained from the internship
Conclusion and recommendation
Background of the hosting company
Brief history of the company
Name : Birhan Tobiyaw Building contractor
Category : grade one engineering consultant
Main office: Addis Ababa
Organizational structure
The building is 1B+G+8 office and mixed use building
Project: Devlopment Bank of Ethiopia
Location : Adama Near to Posta Office
Owner : Devlopment Bank of Ethiopia
Contractor: Birhan Tobiyaw Building Contractor
Consultant : Ultimate Plan P.L.C
Project information
Section of the company I have been working
During my stay on the site I have seen and worked on the
following:
 site work and
 office work.
In this presentation I would like to discuss the experience
I gained both from the site and office activities.
Materials
Concrete
Concrete is a composite material made up of inert materials of varying sizes which
are bound together by a binding medium and the strength of concrete is dependent
on the strength of the aggregate-paste bond.
Materials for Concrete Mix
Cement
Aggregate and
Water and admixture if any
Batching, mixing and placing of concrete
Concrete work
Used in every RC structure
It is a mixture of cement, fine aggregates, coarse aggregate and water
Concrete work includes:
 batching
 mixing
 placing
 compacting and
 curing
Reinforcement work
This includes cutting, bending and placing in position of
reinforcement as per its design.
Stittups :Serve as shear reinforcement and are tied onlongitudinal
reinforcement to provide resistance against outward buckling.
Z-bar: special bar provided to keep spacing on slab
C-bar: used to tie excess bar I beam
Lapping: overlap length of bars tied to extend reinforcement
Formwork
It is temporary construction material used as a mold for a structure with a
required size and shape.
Requirements of the formwork:
Strong enough to resist pressures of fresh concrete ,vibrator , and
workman
Rigid enough to retain the shape without undue deformation
Treated the inside surface with oil
The space enclosed must be true size
Must be economical
Scaffolding
It is a temporary structure erected separately from structural support scaffolds.
Its purpose is to provide an easy circulation and working environment.
scaffolding is required for all type of structure constructed above ground
level.
Various stages of construction should be erected at convenient heights.
Only limited loads should be put on the scaffolding
 Mobile truck mixer
 Concrete pumper truck
 Vibrator
 Plumb bob
 Tape
Equipment used
Man power
On the site each employees are their own responsibility, unless those parties
stand by on their position the overall activity will be stop.
Project manager
Site engineer
Office engineer
Forman
Laborers
Work task I have been executed
Major site works (superstructure)
Are activities performed above the ground level.
Elevation column
It is a concrete structures which transmit the axial loads to the
foundations. It is used to carry and transfer loads from slabs, roofs and beams to
the foundation.
Procedure followed
-Provide cretcher -Tie spacer
-Keep formwork -Remove the formwork on the next day
-Check alignment -Tie bars on starter bars
-Cast the concrete - Keep stirrups
Shear wall
Are types of structures which is vertical elements horizontal force resisting
system.
It is used to resist lateral load caused by wind and earthquake
Procedure followed
-Tie starter bars
-Provide stirrups
-Put spacers
-Keep formwork and cast theconcrete
Beam
It is horizontal member of structure that transfer loads from slab towards
column to ensure structural stability. It resist load by means of internal moments.
Are two types of primary and secondary
Primary beam: runs from column to column and carry major load
Secondary beam: runs from beam to beam through the slab
Procedure followed
-Erect cristy
-Tie formwork
-Keep +ve and –ve bars
-Insert spacer
-Check c/c of stirrups
-Cast the concrete
Slab
Slab are a horizontal structure of building which is provide a level surface
capable of supporting the occupants of a building, equipment, furniture’s and
sometimes internal partitions.
Two way solid slab used in my site
Steps of construction
-Erect H-frame
-Arrangement of formwork
-Cleaning and painting
-Arrangement reinforcement as per design
-Provide spacer
-Concrete casting
Staircase
Stairs are used to connect and act as passage between floors. It is used as a
way to pass from one floor of the building to another floor part of building.
Steps of construction
Formwork for carriage
Reinforcement arrangement
Formwork for riser
Spacers provided
Verticality of riser checked by plumb bob
Concrete added
Remove formwork after 21days
Major Office work
Takeoff sheet: a table format used to compute different amounts of materials
such as amount of volume of concrete required, amounts of formworks……etc
Format of takeoff sheet
Bar schedule
Bar schedule: is a table format which used to calculate total amount of
reinforcement bar required for a certain structure
OVERALL BENEFITS GAINED FROM THE INTERNSHIP
Interms of
Improving Practical Skills
Upgrading my Theoretical Knowledge
Upgrading Interpersonal Communication Skills
Improving Team Playing Skills
Improving Leadership Skill
Entrepreneurship Skill
Conclusion
Generally from my internship time I know that the following points
How to execute a given work
How to perform a given task effectively
How to solve a problem
How to manage a task and time
Recommendation
For company
They should arrange safety tools for site workers specially safety shoe
Provide the necessary raw materials
Control the vibration of concrete in order to avoid over and under vibration.
For university
The internship period is not enough to gain necessary knowledge and should be added
I recommend that if the university prepare student practicing area in university
to practice rather than theoretical learning in addition to internship
