A key to modernizing your data center is to consolidate your legacy workloads through virtualization, which can help reduce complexity for your business. Fewer servers require fewer physical resources, such as power, cabling, and switches, and reduce the burden on IT for ongoing management tasks such as updates. In addition, integrating newer hardware technology into your data center can provide new features that strengthen your infrastructure, such as RAS features on the processor and disk performance improvements. Finally, using SAS 9.4 ensures that you have the latest features and toolsets that SAS can offer.
Compared to a legacy server, we found that a modern four-socket server powered by Intel Xeon processors E7-4890 v2 with Intel SSD DC P3700 Series provided eight times the amount of SAS work, over 11 times the relative performance, and a shorter average time to complete the SAS workload. Running eight virtual SAS instances also left capacity on the server for additional work. Consolidating your SAS workloads from legacy servers onto servers powered by Intel Xeon processors E7 v2 and SAS 9.4 can provide your business with the latest hardware and software features, reduce complexity in your data center, and potentially reduce costs for your business.

Improve AI inference performance with HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11 servers, power...Principled Technologies
In ResNet-50 image-recognition testing, these servers handled significantly more samples per second than previous-generation HPE ProLiant servers while achieving lower latency
Conclusion
Companies using AI inference to solve business problems have a range of choices for running these computationally demanding applications. We explored the potential of one solution, the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11 server featuring 4th Generation Intel Xeon Gold processors. We compared this server to its previous-generation counterpart on ResNet-50 tests using FP32 precision and found it delivered 2.86 times the inference performance while reducing latency by 30.1 percent. We also tested the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11 server at lower precision levels, which place greater demand on CPU resources, and found its performance to be strong with both Int8 and bfloat16 precision levels. Compared to potentially pricey pay-as-you-go cloud solutions and high-end GPU-based server solutions, the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11 we tested can be a smart option for businesses harnessing the power of AI imaging applications.
Accelerating Virtual Machine Access with the Storage Performance Development ...Michelle Holley
Abstract: Although new non-volatile media inherently offers very low latency, remote access
using protocols such as NVMe-oF and presenting the data to VMs via virtualized interfaces such as virtio
adds considerable software overhead. One way to reduce the overhead is to use the Storage
Performance Development Kit (SPDK), an open-source software project that provides building blocks for
scalable and efficient storage applications with breakthrough performance. Comparing the software
paths for virtualizing block storage I/O illustrates the advantages of the SPDK-based approach. Empirical
data shows that using SPDK can improve CPU efficiency by up to 10 x and reduce latency up to 50% over
existing methods. Future enhancements for SPDK will make its advantages even greater.

Optimizing Apache Spark Throughput Using Intel Optane and Intel Memory Drive...Databricks
Apache Spark is a popular data processing engine designed to execute advanced analytics on very large data sets which are common in today’s enterprise use cases. To enable Spark’s high performance for different workloads (e.g. machine-learning applications), in-memory data storage capabilities are built right in.
However, Spark’s in-memory capabilities are limited by the memory available in the server; it is common for computing resources to be idle during the execution of a Spark job, even though the system’s memory is saturated. To mitigate this limitation, Spark’s distributed architecture can run on a cluster of nodes, thus taking advantage of the memory available across all nodes. While employing additional nodes would solve the server DRAM capacity problem, it does so at an increased cost. Intel(R) Memory Drive Technology is a software-defned memory (SDM) technology, which combined with an Intel(R) Optane(TM) SSD, expands the system’s memory.
This combination of Intel(R) Optane(TM) SSD with Intel Memory Drive Technology alleviates those memory limitations that are inherent to Spark, by making more memory available to the operating system and to Spark jobs, transparently.

Webinar: Designing a schema for a Data WarehouseFederico Razzoli
Are you new to data warehouses (DWH)? Do you need to check whether your data warehouse follows the best practices for a good design? In both cases, this webinar is for you.
A data warehouse is a central relational database that contains all measurements about a business or an organisation. This data comes from a variety of heterogeneous data sources, which includes databases of any type that back the applications used by the company, data files exported by some applications, or APIs provided by internal or external services.
But designing a data warehouse correctly is a hard task, which requires gathering information about the business processes that need to be analysed in the first place. These processes must be translated into so-called star schemas, which means, denormalised databases where each table represents a dimension or facts.
We will discuss these topics:
- How to gather information about a business;
- Understanding dictionaries and how to identify business entities;
- Dimensions and facts;
- Setting a table granularity;
- Types of facts;
- Types of dimensions;
- Snowflakes and how to avoid them;
- Expanding existing dimensions and facts.
