INTRODUCTION
• Integument is skin.
• Skin and its appendages (Hair & Hair follicles, Sebaceous &
Sweat glands and Nails) make up the “integumentary system”.
SKIN
Consists of 3 layers:
1. Epidermis - Keratinized stratified squamous
epithelium.
2. Dermis - Strong, flexible connective tissue.
3. Hypodermis (Subcutaneous / superficial fascia) - Fatty
tissue.
Functions:
• Protection
• Synthesizes vitamin-D with UV
• Regulates body heat
• Prevents unnecessary water loss
• Sensory reception (nerve endings)
SKIN APPENDAGES
• Hair and hair follicles:
Derived from epidermis and dermis.
• Sebaceous (oil) glands:
• Sweat glands:
• Nails:
DISORDERS OF THE INTEGUMENTARY
SYSTEM
• Burns
• Infections
• Skin cancer
CONCLUSION
• First line of defense for body.
• Integumentary System is essential for the living organism for
