The process of using technology (e.g. multimedia,
computers, audiovisual aids) as a tool to improve
learning.

Practices?
General principles, guidelines, and suggestions for
good and effective teaching based on the systematic
study of instruction and learning.
Instructional Technology
Integration
 Simply using instructional technology does not
guarantee successful student learning or better
educational outcomes.
 Consider how instructional technology relates to
teaching and learning.
 Integrate technology into instruction effectively by
using a three-step process: Plan, Implement, and
Assess.

Step 1: Plan
 Determine the optimal uses of the technology
and its possible effect on teaching and learning.
 Studies show that frustration and inefficient
teaching with instructional technology are often
the result of poor planning.

 Understand personal technological proficiency
 Determine student needs and technology skills
 Establish a clear purpose for using instructional
technology
 Determine the availability of instructional
technology and technical support.

 Integrate technology into your instruction and use
it to achieve specific instructional objectives and
learning outcomes.

 Increase interaction between instructors and students
 Increase cooperation among students
 Increase students’ active learning
 Prompt feedback given to students
 Facilitate students’ time on task
 Communicate expectations
 Benefits for students with diverse talents and ways of

 Systematically examine a particular aspect of
instructional technology use (e.g., content
delivery, method, testing approach, technological
innovation) to determine its effect and/or how it
can be improved.
 Focus on improving student learning and/or
teaching practices and inform planning decisions
on what to do differently the next time technology
is used.

 Reflect a comprehensive concept of learning
