3. What are the main institutions used for each of the films? (in terms of
production and distribution?) Find their logo and add it on.
• As for the main institution for tangled the company that the film was produced by was Walt Disney
animation studios and Walt Disney pictures. The first production company was the one that produced the
film and the second distributed it. These are both of the main film companies that produce Disney films
which is one of the reasons why this film made a lot of money. This film company has a large audience, from
young to old, which is why when one of their movies are released they receive a lot of money and income
from one film being released alone.
• The main institution for paper towns was Temple Hill Productions and TSG entertainment. Both of these
production companies haven't produced or distributed many well known films. This film got most of its
following due to the popularity of the book which was released a while before the film was shown in
cinemas. This film being based on the book is the main reason why it got most of the following it did, which is
why it isn’t a huge blockbuster.
4. How much money was used to produce each film?
(the budget)
• Tangled is in mainly every single list when looking for the biggest blockbuster.
This represents that the film did progressively well in how much it sold and how
much popularity it gained. As for the budget used towards the film to make it as
good as it was, the company spent 260 million USD on the film. As for the Box
Office they spent a huge amount of 591.8 million USD.
• Paper towns was a blockbuster film and gained a good majority of following on
the film however the budget spent on the film was extremely low. 12 million
USD was spent and with the box office 85.5 million USD was spent on the film.
On one side it shows in comparison to each other, tangled and paper towns had
a huge difference between the budget spent and the recognition they both get
compared to each other is initially different.
5. How well known are the production companies for
both the high budget and low budget films?
• Tangled is the most expensive animation film ever made and the main animation films
produced are well known either produced by Disney, of which is a well followed
production/distribution company. Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney have
produced many of the older animation films such as the 1950 Cinderella and 1967 the
jungle book. Both of Tangled’s production companies have distributed many popular
films and many of the main biggest blockbusters to have been released.
• On the other hand the two production companies that produced paper towns are not
that well known and haven’t produced many big budget blockbusters. TSG
entertainment has produced just as many known films as Temple Hill productions.
They have produced films such as The Maze Runner, The Fault In Our Stars and Gone
Girl. As for the other production company Temple Hill Productions they have produced
these same films and a few more such as Twilight and Safe Haven. These films did not
have a lot of money put into the production however, several of the films do have
quite a big following.
6. List the differences between the high-budget film
and the low-budget film in terms of institutions…
• There are a majority of differences between the high budget film; tangled
and the low budget film; paper towns, in terms of institutions. With the
institution's that produced Tangled, they are a well known production
company and have a lot of money to spend on any film that they produce,
because they know they will get all their money back spent on the film and
more, because of how long that their company has been around for and how
much of a following that this company has. This company have a large target
audience as it has been around for such a long time, where as in comparison
to paper towns this company has only a few films that are known but their
target audience isn’t much of a range with the films that they release. Even
though Tangleds production companies main target audiences are the
younger group, as it has been around for so long it also targets families and
the older generation from when the company first came about.
7. List any similarities that exist between the high-budget film
and the low budget film in terms of institutions.
• Even though there are few similarities between the low budget and high budget films in
terms of institutions the main one is that some of the films produced by each company
do get some of the same following. Also the production of on one of the films produced
by Temple Hill productions spent a budget of 393.6 million USD on their film and with
The Jungle Book 1967 the budget of the box office was 205.8 million USD which shows
that not every well known company spends a large amount of money on each film to
gain a good following as an outcome.
• As for the new films produced by Walt Disney, their budget is a lot larger than it ever
used to be which is why tangled is one of the biggest budget blockbuster ever made as
it is a newer film. Cinderella had a budget of 95 million USD and the older Cinderella
had a budget of 2.9 million USD, which in figures shows a huge comparison of how
production companies have changed and shows that Walt Disney is a better company
than the two that produced paper towns as it has more money to spend on their films
due to the income that they receive from each film they release.
8. What other films has the production company made?
Were these as successful? Why/Why not?
• Walt Disney has produced many other films that have been just as successful as
tangled has. From a worldwide perspective, from the release of tangled they
managed to make just under $592 million as a total which is a large amount of
money made from one film. As for another film produced by this company, the lion
king managed to make $422 million from just being in the theatres for over 26
weeks, which on average proves to have made around the same total as tangled
has so far.
• As for Paper Towns production company, their industry is quite small and has not
made as many blockbuster as Walt Disney have made in the past. However
evaluating all the films that Paper Towns companies have made, some of the films
have made over what paper towns did. For example paper towns worldwide made
a total of $81.9 million, which is impressive due to the budget being of only $12
million. In comparison another film that these companies made was safe haven
with a budget of $28 million and from this film they made £30.5 million and
comparing the two of paper towns and safe haven it shows that paper towns was a
much more popular film due to how much more money it made with the budget in
mind. This shows that a large budget does not need to be spent on a film to get the
most popularity or make the most money from it.
9. What genre of films does the company normally produce?
Is this important when considering who could produce
your film? Why?
• With Walt Disney, most of the genre of films that they make are animated and
this is important to consider when thinking about who could produce your film
due to many reasons. One of the main reasons being that there is a specific
target audience to who watch animated films. Most Disney films are aimed at the
younger generation due to many factors such as the plot of the film, the language
and just the film in general with what the film is to do with. Most people would
associate Disney films with children.
• As for the other company, TSG entertainment and Temple Hill productions,
looking at all of their films are based around the same genre such as teen rom
com or young adult fiction, therefore their films also has a specific target
audience. There is no point in creating a horror film with bad language that only
18 year old are allowed to hear. These companies releasing this type of film
would not get much of a target audience compared to their normality and the
film would not be as popular as hoped for.
10. What audiences do each of the institutions aim to appeal
to? Is this reflected through their film choice, or does this
vary?
• The audiences for Walt Disney are set mainly for children. They would not produce
films that are not an animation, or are not a long the lines of princesses or castles or
kings, along those lines. Walt Disney is one of the most well known film companies
and has been around for years. The institutions aims to appeal mostly to the youth of
the years generation. It is reflected throughout their film choice and does not vary
much. The most Walt Disney has ever gone away from it normal making of the film is
when they create a remake of an old animation film such as 2015 Cinderella, being
based on the cartoon film released in 1950.
• With the institution that produced paper towns, most of their films are also based a
long the same kind of topic and use the same kind of language as they have a based
audience that they don’t want to lose. Comparing paper towns and safe haven they do
have a different kind of audience with only safe haven having a more expanded age
category of an audience, however the making of the film is still based around the same
kind of people the film just had made progress with a wider range of an audience.
11. Which institution do you feel outperforms the other and
could claim to be more successful, considering your
research? Explain your reasons.
• The institution I believe to be overall more successful is Disney, the production
company of tangled. I believe this due to many reasons and that statistics can
show. Tangled made worldwide $592 million where as paper towns and safe
haven made money around the mark of $30-$90 which is no where near the
money that was made from tangled. With Disney as well, they are well known all
over the world and has passed through several generations, even with the main
target audience being mainly aimed at young children, with the company being
around for such a long period of time, people that saw the first ever Disney films
would still want to watch the remakes of the originals or even introduce the
institution of films t their children and watch then with them. Also over all Disney
has made 55 films as of 2016. Where as in comparison with the other
institutions, the company TSG entertainment, they have made 15 films and many
of them have not been labelled as big budget blockbusters. So as a result Disney
has been the most successful institution.
