Question 3:
What Kind Of Media Institution Might
Distribute Your Film And Why?
I would like my film to be to be distributed by a large conglomerate for many reasons. One of the reasons I say this
is because having a large conglomerate allows us to get a bigger budget, which therefore creates a better product
as more has gone into it. Another reason would be because it allows the film to have better advertising as the large
conglomerates are more worldly recognised which will allow more people to come and watch the film , where as
independent companies like steel mill are not. The other reason for this is that the lager companies are able to
finance all of the advertising costs. An example of this would be Disney as they are a conglomerate that uses its
subsidiaries to promote and advertise its franchise through the use of synergy. An example of this would be
Disney interactive (Games, DVD’s), working with Disney Records (songs) to promote ‘Frozen’. By doing this it
allows people who consume the media in different ways a chance to see the product. The effect that this will have
on my film is that more people will be able to come and watch it, as there is a wider audience. Moreover having a
conglomerate like ‘Disney’ produce my film will mean that I will be able to have better visual quality, this will
mean a greater viewing experience for the consumers of my media product.
Disney
This is the film frozen it is one of
Disney's highest grossing film of the
21st century. The film was released in
November 2013. This product used
every form of synergy to promote its
self, hence why it did so well. The film
had a box office taking of $400,736,600.
20th Century Fox
This is another big conglomerate that has produced many films such as, Avatar, the first two Star Wars trilogies, Ice Age,
Power Rangers, X-Men, Die Hard, Home Alone, Planet of the Apes and Night at the Museum. Just like Disney,
Twentieth Century Fox is a film corporation ,it is a big film distributor and one of the six major American film studios.
20th century fox is now a subsidiary of the new film coelomate called 21st Century Fox. As this corporation is such a big
corporation it means that my film will have the best imaging, i.e. the best CGI technology available, as it will have a lot of
funding from the main conglomerate. 20th century fox would again be a good institution to distribute my film as they
have the funds to do so, and they have produced films of the same genre, where as the conglomerate Disney has not.
This could possibly be a better choice than Disney as 20th century fox have the target audience I want (teens), where as
Disney aim there films a family audiences. This organisation also has the funds to produce extensive advertising, which
is a benefit for my film as it will get more publicity.
Lions Gate
Getting my film distributed by a conglomerate will be very difficult, unless the film was produced by the company. This
is why I have looked into smaller distribution companies, whom where able to cover the costs of advertising and other
things that come under the distribution of a media product efficiently and effectively, so the target audience are aware
of my film. The institution that I choose was lions gate, this is due to the fact that it is still a well known film intuition
and it has the finances to produce good films. This can be shown through there recent film release of the new ‘Hunger
Games’, where Lions Gate teamed up with another film distributor called ‘Color Force’, to produce one of the highest
grossing films of 2014. Therefore this is the best the best institution to distribute my film as they are more inclined to
distribute my film as they are, smaller than the lager conglomerates, they have already produced well known thriller
films, and they have the finances to produce an effective distribution for my film.
