This document discusses using student response systems known as "clickers" to promote drug and alcohol prevention programs on college campuses. It notes that excessive drinking is common among college students and has many negative consequences. Virginia Commonwealth University implemented a program called BLING that uses clickers to anonymously survey students about their drinking behaviors to help correct misperceptions. A study found that students who participated in the clicker intervention reduced their drinking and inaccurate beliefs more than those who received a traditional lecture. The document advocates that clickers provide a safe, anonymous way for students to share sensitive information that can then be immediately displayed and discussed to increase awareness of issues related to drug and alcohol use on campuses.
1) College dropout rates are high, with 1/3 of undergraduates dropping out in their first year and only half completing college, despite record enrollments. 2) Students with ADHD, which affects around 10% of children, face greater challenges in college like sustaining attention and organizing tasks. 3) Fewer than 3% of eligible students with ADHD receive accommodations from disability offices, despite laws requiring support. The document calls for colleges to improve support for students with ADHD through early screening, coaching, and disability office reforms to increase retention.
The document discusses changes in graduate admissions from 1993 to 2017. It notes trends around increasing technology, shifting institutional structures, growing competition, and evolving consumer behavior. Specifically, it outlines the transition from email to websites to social media and mobile access. Institutions have moved towards more centralized and professionalized admissions. Competition has increased from both traditional and non-traditional schools. Consumer expectations have risen around quick response times, personalization and using technology. The document then discusses changes at Tarleton State University over the past 3 years in staffing, responsibilities and strategic planning for graduate admissions. It highlights strategies around personalized outreach and responsiveness.
The document discusses college drinking and efforts by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) Task Force to address the issue. The NIAAA Task Force has collected data on college drinking and developed interventions for students with alcohol problems. College students have higher rates of alcohol-related issues like DWI, binge drinking, and deaths. In response, the NIAAA implemented a 3-tiered intervention approach and ongoing research on drinking patterns, social norms, and prevention programs. While college drinking is common, collaborative efforts aim to better understand the issue and help students with alcohol problems.

This document outlines the problem of poor vision access negatively impacting student performance and proposes policy alternatives to address it. It notes that 1 in 5 children have undiagnosed vision problems which can lower academic achievement. The optimal policy proposed is a mobile vision clinic that would remove barriers to care by bringing services directly to students, as seen in successful programs in other states. Next steps suggested include securing funding and forming partnerships to implement a small-scale mobile clinic in Clarke County, Georgia.

Too often when people state that college isn’t for “everyone” they neglect to realize this blanket statement limited to a group of people that may have a deep desire for college but simply lack the toolkit, the resources, the support, and the encouragement to actualize that deep desire and dream of college.
This document summarizes key data points from an analysis of Crete-Monee High School. It identifies strengths and areas for growth in attendance, achievement gaps, and college readiness. Suggested root causes for low attendance include lack of transportation and engagement, while reasons for achievement gaps include use of a curriculum that favors non-low income students and traditional learning styles. The document recommends increasing culturally informed teaching, cooperative learning, standards-based curriculum, and post-graduation support systems to address these issues.
The document discusses the importance of vertical and horizontal alignment in education to prepare students for success beyond their current grade level. Vertical alignment refers to developing standards, assessments, and curricula that build upon each other between grade levels. Horizontal alignment creates connections between standards, assessments, and curricula across different subject areas. The document provides examples of how a health promotion course could achieve both vertical and horizontal alignment through statewide articulation with universities, dual credit opportunities, integrating information technology, writing assignments, and practical skills assessments.

This presentation discusses school attendance issues in Fairfax County Public Schools. It provides data showing average daily attendance rates, the number of students with unexcused absences by grade level from 2013-2014, and outcomes of truancy for students, families, schools, and communities. Common reasons for missing school related to the child and family are outlined. While interventions should be multi-modal and collaborative, current Fairfax responses to truancy in schools are limited and inconsistent. Promising programs incorporating parent notification, mentoring, family engagement, restorative justice, and multiagency collaboration are highlighted.
States are increasingly using early warning systems to identify students at risk of falling off track to graduation. These systems analyze data like attendance, behavior, and course performance to predict which students may need additional support. States provide this early warning data to districts, schools, teachers, counselors, and parents to help guide intervention efforts. While more states are developing early warning systems, most only provide the data periodically or upon request. Going forward, states aim to better support stakeholders in using predictive analytics to keep students on a path to both high school graduation and future career or college readiness.

It notes that assessments like NWEA can project student progress toward college readiness and help teachers guide instruction. The document also discusses the importance of preparing students for upwardly mobile careers, keeping them on an academic track, and maximizing their chances of graduation from high school, career training, or college. Simplifying financial aid applications, like the FAFSA, can significantly increase college enrollment and aid receipt among low-income students.
Adult Learners Who Are They And What Do They WantNiki Perkins
This document provides an overview of a study examining the characteristics and career goals of adult learners. It analyzes survey responses from nearly 12,000 adult learners at 11 colleges and universities. Key findings include:
1) Adult learners surveyed were on average 38 years old, mostly white women. Many were married or financially independent.
2) Personal satisfaction and attaining life goals were the primary reasons for attending college, rather than job advancement.
3) Adult learners reported lower feelings of superiority than traditional college students. They received strong family support for their education.
4) Most adult learners felt they had clear career objectives and plans, though those with only high school degrees were less clear.
The document discusses whether career and technical high schools (CTE) are an effective entry point for early childhood education careers. It analyzes surveys of CTE teachers/administrators and students who earned a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential in high school. The surveys found that CTE programs are capable of creating pathways to the field and that earning a CDA in high school encourages continued education. However, challenges remain around varying training standards, lack of funding, and low compensation for early childhood educators. Overall, the CDA credential appears well-aligned with recommendations to improve the early childhood workforce.

The research seeks to provide knowledge to guide CALL's service delivery and increase educational access for adult learners in Louisiana.
The document is ACT's annual report on college and career readiness among US high school graduates. Some key findings:
- 59% of the 2015 graduating class took the ACT, up from 57% in 2014.
- 40% met 3 or 4 ACT college readiness benchmarks, though 31% met none.
- Opportunities for improvement exist in reading and science where 10% scored within 2 points of the benchmark.
- 86% of students aspired to postsecondary education but only 69% enrolled in 2014, leaving room to close the aspirational gap.
Post-Traditional Student Success the Key to National ProsperityInsideTrack
The document discusses doubling college enrollments in the US by 2020 through increasing post-traditional student completion rates. While 69% of institutions claim to track post-traditional student retention and completion, only 22% could provide current retention rates and 20% provide completion rates. Major obstacles to effective measurement include a lack of coordination, resource constraints, and cultural resistance to measurement. The document promotes continued work to raise awareness and share best practices to improve post-traditional student success.

Jessica Cardichon from the Learning Policy Institute discussed why chronic absenteeism matters and how states are addressing it. She defined chronic absenteeism and explained its negative impacts on students. Phillip Lovell from the Alliance for Excellent Education then discussed how ESSA requires states to report chronic absenteeism rates and select a fifth non-academic indicator. They took questions from participants on challenges in addressing chronic absenteeism and opportunities provided by ESSA. The webinar provided resources on state efforts to improve data collection and reduce chronic absenteeism through interventions and professional development.
Unfinished: Insights From Ongoing Work to Accelerate Outcomes for Students Wi...Jeremy Knight
Despite some gains over the past 20 years, significant numbers of students are not meeting grade-level expectations as defined by performance on academic assessments. Meanwhile, few schools are able to support the sort of accelerated academic learning needed to catch students up to grade-level expectations.
Evidence indicates this is not for lack of educator commitment or dedication. Instead, many educators lack clarity about how to help students catch up. Common messages about holding a high bar for academic rigor and personalizing learning to meet students where they are can be perceived as being at odds with one another.
“Unfinished: Insights From Ongoing Work to Accelerate Outcomes for Students With Learning Gaps” synthesizes a broad body of research on the science of learning in order to inform efforts to help students close gaps and meet grade-level expectations. This deck argues that helping students catch up is not about rigor or personalization — classrooms need both.
Closing learning gaps requires students to be motivated and engaged to grapple with challenging, grade-level skills and knowledge — while also having their individual learning needs met.
The report identifies what must happen among educators, systems-level leaders, teacher developers, instructional materials providers, and technology experts to move beyond the dichotomy of “rigor versus personalization” and toward a future that effectively blends the two.
This document discusses factors that can propel low-income students into college and careers. It finds that most minority students and parents see college completion as important. While college attainment has increased overall, traditionally disadvantaged groups have seen the largest gains. The document also examines predictors of college readiness and the importance of non-academic supports like assistance completing financial aid forms. It argues college readiness encompasses multiple dimensions beyond test scores and that simplifying processes like financial aid applications can significantly increase college enrollment and aid receipt among low-income students.
