The Earth is composed of four main layers from outermost to innermost: the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core. The crust is the thinnest layer and is made up of either lighter continental crust or denser oceanic crust. Below the crust lies the thick mantle, which makes up most of the Earth's mass. At the center are the core layers - the liquid outer core surrounding a solid inner core made mostly of iron. Scientists study seismic waves from earthquakes to learn about the composition and structure of the Earth's interior layers.
