3. Earth’s Layers Based on evidence from earthquake waves and exposed rocks, scientists have been able to produce a model of Earth’s interior. Earth’s interior has at least four distinct layers-the inner core, the outer core, the mantle, and the crust. Earth is similar to a peach in some ways. 4. Inner Core The innermost layer of the Earth is the solid inner core. The core is dense and mostly composed of solid iron. When seismic waves reach this layer they speed up, indicating that it is solid. The inner core is the hottest part of the Earth at 5,000 C. The core is under tremendous pressure. Pressure increases because more material is pushing toward Earth’s center as a result of gravity.

8. Mantle The mantle is above the outer core It is the largest layer in the Earth’s interior, it makes up about 67% percent. Even though the mantle is solid, it flows slowly, similar to putty. The mantle has two parts: the asthenosphere-the lower mantle, and the lithosphere- the upper mantle The lithosphere is composed of crust and the asthenosphere is composed of a plastic-like layer upon which the plates of the lithosphere float and move
