This document discusses the project initiation phase in the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) approach. It describes how a project starts through business requirements, opportunities, or problems. It explains how a project/solution is selected using scoring models, benefit contribution analysis, or economic models. It also covers considerations for whether a project will succeed, stakeholders needs, and how a project is formalized through a project charter and preliminary project scope statement.
Setting Up for Success: The Kickoff MeetingSoCal UX Camp
Event: SoCal UX Camp 2016
Presented by: Katie Guernesy
Managing stakeholders well is a designer's and product manager’s keystone in launching a successful project: on time, with low risk and hopefully- with everyone happy. A great kickoff meeting can set the stage for the road ahead and... get everyone excited and in the mood to collaborate and problem solve.
In this session, walk away with:
-How to get ahead of the 8-ball: pre-kickoff buy-in and meeting preparation
-Effective facilitation strategies so people are engaged and off their phones
-The important information to communicate to create context and buy-in
Audience and speaker will interact in such a way that models kickoff meeting best practices through a real-life project example.
APM webinar held on 27 April 2021.
Presenters:
Naomi Brooks, Sebastian Williams, Martin Paver
Revolutions, it’s been remarked, never go backward. Nor do they advance at a constant rate. Just consider the radical transformation unleashed by data analytics.
By now, it’s clear the data revolution is changing businesses and industries in profound and unalterable ways.
We have a real opportunity, as project professionals, to harness the benefits of data to support the progress of our projects.
We can only do this if we fully understand and embrace the fundamental requirements of data. This session will look to explore the why of data, providing an initial insight into why you should embrace it’s role in current and future projects.

Connector Corner: Automate dynamic content and events by pushing a buttonDianaGray10
Here is something new! In our next Connector Corner webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use a single workflow to:
Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message
Join us to learn more about this new, human-in-the-loop capability, brought to you by Integration Service connectors.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

6. HOW DOES A PROJECT START?
Business Requirements
Example:
The government requires airline companies to implement
safety-management systems.
A company needs to find out the success of their ecommerce
web-site
Opportunities
To take advantage of an opportunity like technology
breakthrough.
Example
many projects may be planned targeting iPhone or iPad
Problem
To reduce/eliminate a problem.
Airport x faces 2/3 accidents every year,
the airport authority may wish
to perform a project to identify causes and develop solution 6
sayed@justetc.net,www.justetc.net
7. HOW IS A PROJECT/SOLUTION
SELECTED?
A particular project may have
different alternative solutions.
A company may have
multiple project plans
and they need to select one of them.
But How?
Scoring Model
Benefit contribution
Economic models
7
sayed@justetc.net,www.justetc.net
8. HOW IS A PROJECT SOLUTION
SELECTED?
Scoring Model
Identify some matrix to find
which project strategy is better
or which project/solution will be more profitable
Assign values for these parameters
and select one that provides greater value
Benefit contribution
Use cost benefit analysis
short term and long term cost benefit analysis
8
sayed@justetc.net,www.justetc.net
9. HOW IS A PROJECT SOLUTION
SELECTED?
Economic models
Benefit Cost Ratio

Internal Return Rate
Present Value and Net Present Value
Opportunity Cost
Discounted Cash Flow
Return on Investment
9
sayed@justetc.net,www.justetc.net
10. SOME CONSIDERATIONS
Will a project succeed?
There are many mathematical models
to justify/predict the success of a project
Do we need to consider project stakeholders?
Yes. Because the project may
benefit some people
and may cause disadvantages to some people.
Project managers need to
manage and convince both of the groups
How is a project formalized?
A project charter is developed
to present the business needs and the outcome.
It is just a document that is reviewed before (or for) project
authorization 10
