2. ! Costume: Dark alternative clothing, as this is commonly used in photographs for
alternative rock magazines. Somewhat informal and maybe edgy looking. Possibly leather
jackets and black trousers/jeans, possibly ripped or dark looking suits.
! Lighting: I want to use 3 point lighting as this will give the photograph a professional look
and make the actors stand out. I may also use some low angle and chiaroscuro lighting to
add mystery and intimidation to the photographs as this will make them look mysterious
and powerful.
! Acting: I want them to pose in both a serious and more informal matter. This will give the
photographs a range of emotions and mean I can pick and choose what emotion looks
best for each page.

4. Photography! Makeup: I want to use very little make up, as from the research I’ve conducted the people on alternative rock
magazines normally look quite naturalistic. If I use any makeup it will be a little bit of foundation and maybe some
eyeliner as this just helps their facial features stand out a little more and black eyeliner is very common within
alternative rock fashion and in alternative rock magazine photos.
! Props: In most alternative rock magazines the artist/s are normally holding nothing and simply posing as I
discovered from my research into alternative rock magazines. However, if props are used they tend to be either
electric guitars, microphones, amps and other similar objects. I will take several shots without any props, but if I do
use props I think it would be a nice idea to take a photo with my model holding and playing an electric guitar as it
makes them look like they are performing.
! Setting: I’ll use the green screen to take most of my photos I think because as I found from my research, most
alternative rock magazines only have a single colour for the background as the main focus is on the actual artist/s
and the headlines. If I was to use any other setting though I may use a stage as it would look like a photograph from
a rehearsal or live performance and emphasises to the audience that they are a musician/group of musicians.

5. Genre Conventions
! Colour Scheme: Black as a prominent colour as this is commonly used within the genre.
Also red and purple as these are also commonly used within the genre and also were the
most popular colours when I conducted my research.
! Typography: Irresponsible Direction For headlines and masthead as sans serif fonts with a
scratchy/scruffy look to them are commonplace within alternative rock magazines. Avenir
Book for anchorage and contents page as it is a easy to read sans serif font.
! Images: I will use dark colours within the clothing and make up as these are iconic to the
genre. I will also include guitars as props as these are a main instrument within alternative
rock and so are iconic of the genre.
! Content: I will include interviews, reviews and concert information as these were the most
popular results from my questionnaire and are all common articles within alternative rock
magazines and so are conventional for the genre.

8. Target Audience
! My magazine will be aimed at the Young Adventurous Keen and Single (YAKS), which are typically
young people who have some money to spare and will invest into things they are interested in, and so
those who are interested in alternative rock will certainly invest within the magazine.
! It will be aimed towards individualists, as alternative rock music often touches upon controversial and
political subjects or subjects other than love and parties. This is therefore out of the mainstream and
rebellious, so will appeal to individualists.
! Age: Young teenagers and young adults. Roughly 15-25. Alternative rock music is extremely popular
within this age group as they are still young and like rebellious language and controversial ideas.
! Gender: Female. Most people who answered my questionnaire were female and females are big
consumers of alternative rock and stereotypically enjoy the music and find the band members
attractive.
! Ethnicity: White British as most people who responded to my questionnaire were white British. It’s
also stereotypical for them to enjoy alternative rock magazines and all the gossip and bands they
include.
! Social Class: Lower-middle class to lower class as these were the most popular results on my
questionnaire and most people within my target audience are within the lower class. They prefer to be
entertained rather than educated so I will make sure my magazine is mainly entertaining rather than
educational.
