The double page spread features a photograph of Lady Gaga topless covering her chest with her hands and chains around her neck. Her name is printed at the top in capital letters. The right page features a large red "L" and three columns of text below. The color scheme of black, white, and red conveys sexiness and danger. The image portrays Lady Gaga in a provocative yet classy manner through her pose and makeup. No headline or strap line is needed as the controversial nature of her image makes the topic clear.

2. Denotation
The Magazine cover consists of a photograph of a man most likely sitting down
wearing dark clothing. The man is looking directly at the camera in a medium shot.
His left hand is holding a chess piece from the large chess board which is in front
of him. His other hand is not visible. There is a large XXL masthead on the left hand
side. The man’s name is in large white capital letters underneath the masthead.
There are three cover lines in colours red, white and black. There is a bar code
visible at the bottom right hand corner of the cover.
Masthead
The mast head is large and bold, really brought out by a large red rectangle behind
it. This brings out the white lettering which is in all capital letters. The masthead
takes up most of the top left hand corner of the magazine cover and the use of Dr
Dre’s head to the right makes it seem as if he is promoting the magazine. The
masthead is also large and stands out on its own that symbolises that the brand is
strong and well known. The use of colour red as the back drop for the text
symbolises a strong radicalism because this is what red symbolises in
western/American culture.
Costume
His clothing is all black which connotes that he is a dark character as well as being
someone very serious and solemn in his business. He is wearing a black shirt with a
black leather jacket over the top. He is not wearing any bright colours or even
jewellery for that matter which connotes that he doesn’t want to be portrayed as
a fun person whose life is filled with “glitz and glamour”.
3. NVC (Non Verbal Communication)
His non-verbal communication is also very serious. He is staring directly at the camera with an almost angry or
annoyed face; this could connote that he is very angry at people for asking him about detox which he has by this
point scrapped twice and been working on for over 10 years. He’s shoulders are hunched over slightly which
suggests that he has been at work.
Lighting
The lighting in this picture is not very high key. He is lit from one side which makes one side of his face darker
and shadowy. This is meant to display that although his work will all come to light in this interview, he’s still has
some information to hide. His hand with the chess piece is also well lit so that the chess board and his hand are
clearly in view, these connote that the chess piece is an important metaphor in the interview as Dr Dre announces
the new release of his album.
Setting
The main focus of this front cover is the artist on the front. The light grey setting in the background allows the artist
to jump out and be the main focus. Although there is not that much setting behind him it all adds to the simplicity in
colours that is used in the front cover.
Composition
The man is reaching for a chess piece as if he is about to make his move. The position of the board suggests that he
is in a live game of chess and we are his opponent. There are still many of his pieces by his side which connotes that
it is still early in the game. This is re enforced by the fact that he is looking directly at the camera. This
whole composition connotes that he is a person who is about to make his move against us or the music business.
Cover lines
The large cover line on the left hand side connotes the idea of a board game. The line “Yes, Detox is coming.” refers
to Dr Dre’s long awaited Album which has been anticipated for over 10 years. Underneath it is read a small pun
which both reinforces the use of a board game in this magazine but also uses it as a metaphor for the “rap scene” at
the time this was released. It connotes that Dr Dre makes music at the highest level and is at the top of his game.
The fact that they use the term master to refer to him connotes a high position of power which he has in the
industry.
Target Audience
The use of a current well-known rapper suggests that this magazine is targeted towards people under the age of 35
and over the age of 17. The gender of the target audience will most likely be predominantly male as the genre of
music this particular magazine represents is more biased towards men.
4. Character
The character in this image is a successful American rapper called T.I he is well
known for his album “no mercy” and his collaboration songs with artists such as
Justin Timberlake and Rihanna. He is wearing glasses which connote a level of
intellect. His character is someone who is extremely confident and smart with his
line of work, this is why he is dressed formally.
The Left Third
The left third in this image is very visible as the main headline and the majority of
the cover lines are on the left side. The artist on the front covers name is also on the
left in big bold writing so that will easily attract the eyes of the target audience.
Setting/lighting
There is almost no setting in this magazine but the simplicity of the white
background allows the rapper to pop out of the page. The lighting is very high key
which would be the most suitable kind of light as this is a close up shot and a dark
picture would make the close up shot redundant. This image is also supposed to
represent a wealth and this clear image of him wearing a suit symbolises that.
Costume
The costume used in this image makes the artist look like a serious business man of
high authority. The use of a suit and black and white makes the front cover have an
American gangster look representative of the mob and Mafia influence in America
in the 1930’s.
NVC (non-verbal communication)
His head is tilted slightly to the right which could connote that he is trying to
intimidate the audience. His face is stern with no facial expression. His look is very
intimidating especially as the image is a close up, if you where to stand that close to
someone in real life you wouldn’t expect them to have this kind of intimidating
look, he has this because the image is supposed to connote him in a position of
power.
Target Audience
The target audience for this magazine is most likely men aged 18 to 25. This is
because this edition will not really be understood because there is a certain level of
old fashioned to this image so 18 would be an appropriate age to begin with. 25 as a
maximum age because I don’t believe anyone after that age will understand this
kind of music and what it represents. Men will particularly be drawn to this
magazine because it is men that predominantly listen to this genre of music that
this magazine represents, some lyrics may even include racial or misogynist lines
which will be offensive to women.
5. Masthead
Unlike most magazines the masthead for this particular front cover is in front
of the artist. In this case it was important that it was in front because they
wanted to get a close up shot of the artist in this front cover. If the masthead
had been behind the artist it would have been unreadable and
unrecognisable so the magazine had to maintain their label. The font is sans
serif which connotes that this magazine
is modern and current. It is bright and provides a shocking contrast to the
otherwise black and white front cover.
Bar code, selling line and website link
In this issue the front cover does not have a bar code or selling line but it
does have a website link which is small and non intrusive. The reason for the
front cover not having a bar code or selling line would be probably because
of the proximity we have with the artist it would be a shame to lose it
because of the bar code, it as simply a
case of “there is not enough space”.
Cover lines
The main cover line shows the rappers name followed by a quote which he
has said in the interview. The main cover line I the biggest and positioned
next to his face. It is important for the main cover line to be the first to catch
your attention and this magazine successfully. There is also a visual hierarchy
which descends from the top to the bottom as each cover line depending on
the importance to this edition gets smaller and further down the page. This
makes the more important headlines more visible to the readers.
6. Denotation
The double page spread above consists of a man with his right hand in a loose fist touching his face. His name is printed in large capital
letters in a gold/yellow colour. There is smaller writing next to it. On the second page on the right there is a quote written in large yellow
and white letters. There are two columns of writing underneath it with the colours alternating between yellow and white. An image of the
same man performing on a stage is seen at the top right hand corner of the page.
Headline
His name is written in large gold letters. The text is presented in a slang way with the use of “@”. The head line for this double page spread
is written in sans serif font. This gives the page a modern look which is in line with the target audience for this magazine. The headline is
written in all capital letters which allow it to stand out, more so than the quote which could be mistaken with the headline but isn’t
because of the use of capital letter.
Character
The man in the image is wearing a hoodie with a gold watch on his wrist. The colour of the watch matches the theme for the whole double
page spread which is gold and white. Gold represents high class and expensive material, the use of these colours connotes that he is a
person with a lot of money. He is wearing glasses which could connote a level of intellect as a rapper wouldn’t normally be seen wearing
glasses. He is also looking up diagonally toward the quote which is on the other page which talks about the struggles that we go through
and how they are just God testing us. Normally the pose given by the artist in the double page spread is direct, however this artist seems
very humble and shy. The image is just between a medium and medium close up shot which allows us to see the artist and be closer in
proximity to him. If he had been really distant then we would have a different reaction to the picture.
7. Image
There is another image in the second page which shows a medium shot of the rapper in action on a stage. This image has low lighting because it was most likely taken in a
club environment. It also adds a striking juxtaposition to the normal yellow and white text and theme with a blue hue. This makes the image pop out and reminds us that the
interviewee is a worldwide successful artist.
Quote
The quote, although very eye catching, still does not take away from the main image or headline. It is a separate entity which represents the text which is directly below it.
Interestingly it is not a direct quote from the article but it is lyrics from a song written by the artist. Although this is an alternative approach to a quote on the double page
spread it still gives a fair idea of what the article will be about; the struggles of the rapper and his relationship with god.
Lighting
The lighting is very high key and his face is lit from the side which makes one side very bright and the other darker, this connotes a darker undertone in his life. The lighting is
also coming from above which makes him seem more innocent and almost holy as lighting from above represents godliness.
Columns
There are two columns in this DPS. They are of even size which make them very neat. There is an area in the beginning that is in gold as opposed to the normal white this
could be a stand-first or it could just be an important piece of information as there is another piece highlighted later on in the second column. I believe the two
columns are a perfect size so because they are no too small or too big as to overwhelm the reader.
Target Audience
From the look of the DPS I can probably predict that this is aimed towards a younger audience, however I don’t think it will be aimed at anyone aged below 19-20. The reason
for this is because it is more mature than a normal rapper interview. The maximum age would probably be around 27-28 again because of the level of maturity in the quotes
from the lyrics but also not older because of the use of slang and informality.
8. Columns
There are 3 columns which take up the whole of the second page. These are very length as there is no headline over the top
or subject name. These columns are equal in length and width and are in keeping with the conventions of a normal double
page spread. They have two drop capitals which symbolises a) the end of the introduction and the beginning of the article and
b) the final paragraph. The articles are all written informally which all of the personality of the journalist to come
through and evoke a reaction from the audience.
Target Audience
from looking at this double page spread I can probably guess that the audience for this will be both women and men aged 20
to 30. men because the pose is quite seductive and suggestible, women because it looks very rich and expensive.
9. Denotation
The double page spread show a woman taking up the entire left page with frizzy hair and no clothing. She is covering her breasts with her
hands and a majority of her chest is covered by a necklace that she is wearing which resemble chains. There is a large L which takes up the
whole of the right page behind the text. There are three columns of text. The artists name is written at the top of the page with her
surname in capital letters. There is a page number seen at the bottom right hand corner of the right page, next to it is a miniature version
of the masthead.
Colour scheme
The colour scheme is very simple as are most double page spreads. By adding the striking red for the L which represents the first letter of
her stage name, it creates a sense of bewilderment which is in keeping with her character as she is known for her outrages and
controversial dress sense and erotic lyrics. The black and white creates finesse whereas the shocking contrast in red connotes sexiness and
danger.
10. Image and Character
The image (in black and white) shows a topless celebrity covering her chest with her hands and a bundle of chains. The use of the image being black and white
connotes a sense of class to her image as her hair resembles that of Marilyn Monroe. Her lips are slightly apart and her head tilted ever so slightly backwards which
connotes a seductive or provocative person. The make-up that is noticeable like her lipstick/gloss is shiny and almost looks gold. This connotes a feeling of high
class and wealth. There are chains wrapped around her neck which are representative of her bizarre dress sense. There is no text or images above the main image
but there is some text behind in an extremely low opacity to keep it visually interesting.
Strap lines and headlines
In a normal magazine there would be a headline stating the artists name in the double page spread and also a strap line which states the subject matter. However
this particular edition has not chosen to add those because it is already pretty clear. This magazine was published around the time where Lady GAGA had risen to
fame and rumours had been released that she was a hermaphrodite. Lady gaga played on these rumours and in the front cover of this magazine was shown in a
pose which showed her to have a giant scrotum underneath her trousers. Upon seeing this front cover the public will have no trouble identifying what the edition
will be
about. They didn’t add a strap line or headline because it would be stating the obvious.
