Information questions are also
called “Wh- questions”
It is ask for information. They are
different from Yes/No questions.
 Who - refers to people.
 Whose - asks about possession.
 Whom - direct or indirect object of a verb or preposition
 What - refers to things , actions , activities , qualities.
 When - used to ask about time.
 Where - used to ask about place.
 Why - used to ask about reason.
 Which - used instead of “ What ” when choosing from a group
 How - asks about quantity (How many) , amount (How much),
size (How 'adjective') , method (How) , frequency (How often).
 In simple present :
Use
“V.do” or “V.be”
WH + DO/DOES + SUBJECT
+ VERB?

* When does she wake
up?
* What did you do
yesterday?
WH + V.BE + SUBJECT?

* Who is that man?

 In simple past :

USAGE :
1. Sometimes there is no
difference.

happiness.

Identify which people or thing we are
talking about

Who/That to refer to people.
Which/That to refer to things.

whose to refer to someone’s
possessions

Necessary to the meaning of the
sentence
• Can left out pronoun
• No commas
Example :
• This is the street where I

• It’s a book which tells you
how to do marketing.
Example :
1.He’s the man (who/that) I
met on the plane.
2. The woman (who) you saw
yesterday has just been
promoted. (different subject)
When who/that is the object of a relative
clause, it can be left out.
Example :
1. I like people who are
kind and considerate.(same
subject).
2. I want a computer
that’s easy to use.
When who/that is the subject of a
relative clause, it must be included.
Not essential information

• Can’t use that instead of
which/who
• Clause written inside
commas

Information question

  • 2. Information questions are also called “Wh- questions” It is ask for information. They are different from Yes/No questions.
  • 3.  Who - refers to people.  Whose - asks about possession.  Whom - direct or indirect object of a verb or preposition  What - refers to things , actions , activities , qualities.  When - used to ask about time.  Where - used to ask about place.  Why - used to ask about reason.  Which - used instead of “ What ” when choosing from a group  How - asks about quantity (How many) , amount (How much), size (How 'adjective') , method (How) , frequency (How often).

  1.  Wh-Question Word + Did + Subject + Base Form Of Verb + Complement + ?
  2. You can omit the relative pronoun when the verbs in the main clause and in the relative clause have a different subject. The subject of met is I, (not he) so it’s not necessary to put who. (=two different subjects)
  3. The information inside commas can be removed without the sentence losing its meaning. (the sentence makes sense without it)
