![Industry and mining, urban waste-water and water related health hazards in the Andean region Mark Mulligan King’s College London, Andes Basin Focal Project Leader. Data on the locations and outputs from industry, mining and urban centres and their potential impacts on water quality and its effects downstream are very lacking in the Andes. Whilst the UNEP-GEMS database contains many stations for the Amazon, it has very few stations in the Andes. In order to better understand the potential quality of water and impacts upon it, we therefore look more broadly at the origins of water arriving at major dams and cities. We first examine the proportion of water arriving at dams and major cities that has originated from protected areas upstream. The impact of different land covers on watershed services is a highly debated topic. Nearly all decisions about water in Minnesota relate either directly or indirectly to data collected by the state’s hydrological observing network. Because most gauges were installed in early 20th century, as a whole the network provides us with roughly a 100-year ‘window’ to estimate flood risks, develop worst-case scenarios for drought, and set maximum allowable withdrawals for aquifers. But when we rely exclusively on observations made during this relatively brief interval, we may inadvertently increase our exposure to hydrological ‘surprises’. In order to make sound decisions about water in Minnesota, we need to expand this window: into the past, drawing upon historical accounts and natural archives; and into the future, via projections from climate and hydrological models. By cultivating a broader perspective on hydrological variability and extremes across the state, we will be better prepared to ensure adequate water supplies and mitigate the impacts of future floods and droughts.

The researchers sampled 12 stream reaches, 6 influenced by upstream ponds and 6 control sites, to test hypotheses about differences in seston levels, filter-feeder biomass, and species richness between the sites. They found no significant differences in these metrics between control and pond-influenced reaches, suggesting the macroinvertebrates are resilient to disturbance from impoundments. There was a near-significant decline in fish species richness at influenced sites, indicating impoundments may fragment habitat in a way that is detrimental to stream fishes. Water and Poverty in Andean Basins
1) Poverty and water availability are two major development issues in the Andean region of Latin America. Growing populations and climate change are exacerbating water problems and conflicts over scarce water resources.
2) The study analyzes data across multiple scales - reviewing literature, assessing national poverty and water trends, and examining municipality-level and household-level data - to understand relationships between poverty and water availability.
3) At broader scales, few direct relationships between poverty and water were found, but localized analyses showed some connections, like drought driving poverty increases in parts of Ecuador. Overall, poverty seems indirectly rather than directly linked to water problems in the Andes.

zkStudyClub - LatticeFold: A Lattice-based Folding Scheme and its Application...
Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security.

- 2. Water regulation services: Protected ecosystems do not protect against the most destructive floods. For ‘normal’ events they do encourage more subsurface flow and thus more seasonally regular flow regimes. Therefore benefits are likely especially in highly seasonal environments.
- 3. Water quality services (where quality is quantity for a purpose). Protected ecosystems encourage infiltration leading to lower soil erosion and sedimentation. Unprotected land will tend to have higher inputs of pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers etc. There are thus clear quality benefits of protected areas: generation of higher quality water than non-protected areas.Assuming that protected areas have a positive impact of water (especially water quality) the proportion of streamflow at a point that is derived from protected areas upstream is thus an indicator of the potential quality of water received and lack of impacts from industry and mining as well as urban waste-water. This was calculated by combining 1km resolution gridded datasets for rainfall (Hijmens et al., 2004), protected areas (WDPA, 2007) flow direction (HydroSHEDS, Lehner et al., 2008), urban areas (CIESIN et al., 2008) and population (Landscan, LandScanTM Global Population Database, 2007). Annual total rainfall (long term mean) was multiplied by a binary value representing the protected area status in each pixel and summed along the flow network from source to mouth to give RfC. The rainfall falling on all areas was also calculated and summed along the flow network to give RfA. (RfC/RfA) * 100 is then the percentage of flow in a given pixel that fell as rain on an upstream protected area. This is shown for part of Colombia/Ecuador in Figure 16.
