10. PHOTO-CATALYTIC OXIDATION
 Use of UV – for two stages of disinfection
 Germicidal UV-C for direct disinfection
 Photo-catalytic oxidation
 TiO2 (catalyst) nano-particles coating on tubes
 UV-A action on TiO2 generates hydroxyl (OH–) radicals
from water in the air
 Hydroxyl radicles are very small and agile, but very
short-lived

11. PHOTO-CATALYTIC OXIDATION …
 Extremely reactive and are able to oxidise most of the
chemicals found in the atmosphere
 Oxidation potential hydroxyl radical (~2.85 eV) is
much more than that of hydrogen peroxide (~1.77 eV)
and ozone (~2.07 eV)
 React with organic components breaking their
chemical bonds
