3. Introduction
Indian nursing council is an national regulatory body for nursing practices and
for nursing education in india .
It is an autonomous body under the government of india ,ministry of health
and family welfare , constituted by the central government under section 3 of
the indian nursing council Act 1947 , of Indian parliament .
It is established in 1949
4. Aims and objectives of INC
To establish the uniform standard of education for nurses , midwives and
health visitors .
To prescribe regulation and syllabus for nursing education.
To recognize qualification of nurses for the purpose of registration and
employment in india and abroad .
To provide approval for registration of indian and foreign nurses holding
foreign qualification.
To give instruction to the state nursing council , examining board , state
government and central government in matter related to the nursing
education and practice
5. Functions of INC
Maintain and regulate uniform standard of nursing education and training in
the country.
Prescribing syllabus and regulation for various nursing courses.
Authorizing state nursing council and examination board to issue qualifying
certificates .
Conduct inspections of nursing schools and colleges to maintain uniformity of
nursing education in the country.
Regulate policies and programs in the field of nursing.
Maintain indian nurses registers .
Has power to withdraw recognition .
Promotes research in nursing

8. INC NORMS FOR NURSING STAFFING
Chief nursing officer : 1 per 500 beds
Nursing superintendent: 1 per 400 beds
Deputy Nursing superintendent : 1 per 300 beds and 1 additional for every 200 beds
Assistant Nursing superintendent : 1 per 100 – 150 beds or 3 – 4 wards
Nursing sisters : 1 per 25 -30 beds or 1 ward
Staff nurses : 1 per 3 beds in teaching and 1 per 5 beds in non teaching hospitals
Staff nurses for ICU: 1 per 1 bed or (1 per 3 beds for each shift )
OPD : 1 per 100 patients
Operation theater : 1 per 25 patients
Infection control nurse : 1 per 250 bedded hospital

INC is the apex statutory body which is responsible for regulating nursing
eduction through examination , certification and maintaining uniform
standard of nursing eduction .
