2. INTRODUCTION
Indian nursing council is
considered to be the
statutory body that
influences nursing
education at the national
level.The INC was
constituted to establish
a uniform standard of
education for nurses ,
midwives , health
visitors and auxiliary
nurses.
3. INDIAN NURSING COUNCIL
The INC is a statutory body
constituted under the INC
Act, 1947. It was
established in 1949.The
council is responsible for
regulation & maintenance
of a uniform standard of
training for nurses,
Midwives, ANM & Health
visitors.
4. Aims And Objectives
To regulate training policies and programmes
in nursing.
To bring about standards of nursing training
courses.
To prescribe minimum standards of education
and training of various nursing programmes.
To regulate these standards in all training
institutions uniformly throughout the country
universities imparting courses in nursing.

To recognize degree/
diploma certificate awarded
by foreign universities/
institutions on reciprocal
basis.
To promote research in
nursing.
To maintain Indian nursing
register for registration of
nursing personnel and
training programmes.

To establish and monitor a
uniform standard of education
and doing inspection of
institutions.
To advise state nursing councils,
examining boards, state
governments and central
government in various important
items regarding nursing education
in the country.

It is having power to withdraw the
recognition of qualification if the
institution not maintaining criteria.

, their setup and the
strength of the
institution.
Nature of inspections
by INC
There are three
types of inspections
by INC since 1996.

a) First inspections – institutes are inspected by
the INC when they apply for starting a course
in nursing.
This is the first step towards INC
recognition.
The schools that seek recognition are required
to submit
Permission letter for state government.
Permission letter for state nursing council.
A copy of the inspection report of the state
nursing council.

Re-inspections –These are done for those
institutions which are found unsuitable on first
or subsequent inspection by INC. once the
institution takes necessary steps to remove
the deficiencies & informs the INC’s
reinspection is done within one year or earlier.
Periodic inspections- Once the institution is
give recognition by INC the institute is
required to send an annual inspection fee
regularly.The INC inspects the institutes
generally after 3 years.

Prescribing of syllabus and evaluate
the syllabus implemented by school
of nursing /college of nursing.
To advice the state nursing councils,
examining boards , state
government and central
government regarding using
education in the country.

Nursing Councils, Boards,
University
Prepare a time schedule for
written and practical
examinations prepare roll
number sheets of students
and send these to various
examination centres.
Draw as schedule for
examinations of various
types of educational
programmes at all centres
at same time.

After examiners have prepared question
papers, to get them printed under strict
confidential atmosphere and keep up the
secrecy.
Get examination conducted at various
centres and get evaluation done.
Prepare examination results and
communication results to various
concerned institutions.

Prepare diploma certificates and
registration certificates of nurses who
have qualified for both.
Arrange for inspections to ascertain
that institutions are carrying out the
educational programmes as per
syllabus conditions rules and regulation
laid down by State Nursing Council.

whose written complaint/
reports are received for not
abiding by regulation of Punjab
Council either at time of
examinations or nursing
practice as a professional
nurse.
The primary function of the
State Board of Nursing is to
protect the public’s safety.

The State Board of nursing is a
regulatory agency created by the
state government, which is devoted
to monitor nurse’s personal and
professional behaviors.
The State Board of Nursing has,
“the legislative power to initiate,
regulate, and enforce the provision
of the Nurse Practice Act.”

The Nurse Practice
Acts delineate the
educational
requirements, roles
and functions, and
disciplinary actions
of a nurse.
This agency is also
responsible for
approving schools of
nursing curriculum
as well as renewing
and issuing licenses.
