Indian literature has been produced for over 2500 years in languages derived from Sanskrit. The earliest works are the Vedas, a collection of hymns addressed to Hindu gods. Two major epic poems are the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The Ramayana tells the story of Rama's life and offers a model of dharma (moral law). It also describes swayamvara ceremonies where princesses chose husbands from suitors. The Mahabharata provides insights into the development of Hinduism and is considered both a history and text about dharma.
