India is an agricultural-based economy and is the largest producer of fruits and vegetables in the world. Fruits & vegetables, being perishable in nature require certain techniques of preservation for retaining the quality and extend the self-life of the production. The estimated annual production of fruits and vegetables in the country is about 130 million tonnes. The cold storage & cold chain facilities are the prime infrastructural component for such perishable commodities.
Cold storage is a temperature – controlled supply chain network, with storage and distribution activities carried out in a manner such that the temperature of a product is maintained in a specified range, needed to keep it fresh and edible for a much longer period than in normal ambient conditions.

Transportation providers now play a more vital role in the fresh food supply chain than ever before. They are expected to provide fast, efficient and sanitary last mile logistics services as this directly impacts the freshness of produce inventory. Product freshness is more critical than ever due to increased customer expectations as consumers are now more educated about varying inventory options available to them. In order for retail grocers to capture market share they must be able to guarantee the highest quality product at the lowest prices- something they can only do by partnering with a reliable and high performing transportation partner. Transportation operations have been impacted by legislation such as the FSMA Sanitary Transportation of Human & Animal Food Rule. Under this legislation many transportation providers have had to make adjustments to their operational processes in order to meet the stringent requirements relating to proper refrigeration during transport, trailer cleansing between loads and proper food protection. Produce inventory shrinkage rates are high due to poor handling during transit. This has spurred advancements in produce packaging and loading procedures. Technology such as cartonization software is being utilized to assist warehouse staff in selecting proper packaging. Transportation providers are also implementing warehouse management software to help direct reverse loading procedures. Reverse loading trailers helps to lower handling requirements as deliveries are made. Minimized handling can potentially reduce inventory damage during transit. Temperature monitors are also being implemented to assist in maintaining regulatory compliance. These monitors track pre-cooling, temperature during transit and temperature at time of delivery. This information helps to complete the audit trail required for FDA FSMA compliance. Vehicle maintenance has also been brought to the forefront as a key factor in ensuring produce inventory quality. Properly maintaining vehicles reduces instances of break downs where inventory shrinkage may occur. Regular maintenance checks are often automated through the transportation providers WMS software. Fuel prices have also affected transportation operations and how they develop their distribution networks. Many are moving towards a spoke-and-wheel strategy, bringing products closer to consumers. To learn more about produce transportation best practices and how the industry is adapting to the latest legislation read this brief SlideShare or contact Datex experts today at marketing@datexcorp.com or 800.933.2839 ext 243.
There are four general types of pickling:
Fresh Pack/Quick Process – covered with boiling vinegar, spices and seasonings. Sometimes may be brined and drained beforehand. Easy to prepare, tart flavor. Have a better flavor if allowed to stand for several weeks after they are sealed in jars.
Fermented – requires more time and effort than quick pack. Pickles go through a curing process in a brine solution for 4 to 6 weeks while bacteria naturally present on cucumbers converts sugars in the cucumbers to lactic acid. Lactic acid preserves the pickles by lowering the pH to less than 4.0, an gives them their distinct flavor.
Fruit Pickles – prepared from whole or sliced fruits and simmered in a spicy, sweet-sour syrup made with vinegar or lemon juice.
Relishes – made from chopped fruits and vegetables cooked to desired consistency in a spicy vinegar solution.

Food Processing Industries (A support system for Non Farm Activities in Rural...iosrjce
“The prosperity of India lies in the prosperity of Villages”--- Mahatma Gandhi
As there is a lot of change in the occupational structure of India since independence. But change in the overall
economy did not have a pronounced effect on rural economies as Indian population still depends largely on
agriculture sector. So, pressure on land should be reduced by giving priority to Rural Non-Farm
Activities(RNFA). Food Processing is one of the such Non-Farm Activity (NFA) which can play a crucial role in
reducing unemployment, poverty and enhances development activities in rural areas. This paper is an attempt to
explain about the significance and performance of important non-farm activity – The food processing industry
(FPI) in India. Further it highlights the major problems faced by FPI. At last it concludes with some remedial
measures for improving their performance
The Indian crop protection industry is estimated to be ~ INR 27,000 Cr (~ USD 4.25 Billion) in FY'14 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 12% to reach ~ INR 47,000 Cr (~ USD 7.5 Billion) by FY '19. Out of this, the domestic market is ~ INR 14,000 Cr. (~ USD 2.25 Billion) in FY '14.
Insecticides are largest sub-segment of agrochemicals with 60% market share whereas herbicides with 16% market share are the fastest growing segment in India. Going ahead, opportunities for Indian crop protection industry will come in the form of exports, growth in generic products, product portfolio expansion, and growth in herbicides and fungicides. However, the Industry faces a number of challenges. Some of the key challenges are stringent environment regulations across the world, low focus on R&D due to high costs, long gestation period for new products and rising sale of non-genuine products. Non-genuine products are not only a challenge to agrochemical industry but also to the overall Indian economy, resulting in loss of revenues for farmers, agrochemical companies and Government.
Thus to harness the potential of agrochemicals by cultivating outlined opportunities, a collaborative and comprehensive approach from the various stakeholders- the Industry, the Government and the regulatory bodies is essential. This concerted and collaborative approach can help overcome the demand-supply constraints and provide the much needed thrust to a Second Green Revolution that can lead to a surplus and self-sufficient agricultural sector in the country.
India is the fourth largest global producer of agrochemicals after the US, Japan and China. This segment generated a value of USD 4.4 billion in FY15 and is expected to grow at 7.5% per annum to reach USD 6.3 billion by FY20. Approximately 50% of the demand comes from domestic consumers and the rest from exports. During the same period, the domestic demand is expected to grow at 6.5% per annum and exports at 9% per annum.

Unveiling the Secrets How Does Generative AI Work.pdfSam H
At its core, generative artificial intelligence relies on the concept of generative models, which serve as engines that churn out entirely new data resembling their training data. It is like a sculptor who has studied so many forms found in nature and then uses this knowledge to create sculptures from his imagination that have never been seen before anywhere else. If taken to cyberspace, gans work almost the same way.

Indian Food Processing Industry – A Synopsis
Page 2
3. 1. Executive summary
India is the world’s second largest producer of food next to China and has the potential of being the biggest in the World.
Domestically, the spending on food and food products amounts to nearly 21% of the gross domestic product of the country and
constitutes the largest portion of the Indian consumer spending more than a 31% share of wallet.
Going forward, the Indian domestic food market is expected to grow by nearly 40% of the current market size by 2015, to touch US
$258 billion by 2015.
Some of the key measures undertaken by the Government include: amendment of the agriculture produce marketing committee act
(APMC Act), rationalization of food laws, implementation of the national horticulture mission etc.
The government has also outlined a plan to address the low scale of processing activity in the country by setting up the mega food
parks, with integrated facilities for procurement, processing, storage and transport.
To promote private sector activity and invite foreign investments in the sector the Government allows 100% FDI in the food processing
& cold chain infrastructure. The recent budget has announced several policy measures, especially for the cold chain infrastructure, to
encourage private sector activity across the entire value chain.
A well developed food processing industry is expected to increase farm gate prices, reduce wastages, ensure value addition, promote
crop diversification, generate employment opportunities as well as export earnings.
This publication gives readers an opportunity to understand food processing industry in India better. It highlights various sectors and
subsectors of the Indian food processing industry and also provides with the status of each sub sector independently.

15. 5. Factors impacting growth of food production
There are restrictions about the size of land
holding in the name of a single entity —
regulations are dependent upon individual
state policy.
Holdings have become
fragmented as the farms are
divided through inheritance.
Small operations make investments in
automation unviable and also
complicate coordination and integration
between farmers, processors and the
end consumer.
1. Fragmented land holding patterns
An imbalance in the usage of
fertilizers has resulted in the drop of
fertilizer efficiency over the years
from 17.1 in 1980 to 6.5 in 2000.
The high dependence on labor for
agricultural activity has affected
the speed of technology adoption.
In spite of efforts by the government in
subsidizing new technology adoption,
challenges in educating the farmers of their
benefits has affected their adoption.
Poor maintenance of natural resources
and high dependence on monsoon
which is not consistently favorable.
2. Low labor productivity with low adoption of technology
Indian Food Processing Industry – A Synopsis
The poor transport and storage infrastructure,
along with use of labor for post harvest
processing affects the farm productivity by
reducing the quantity available for sale.
The lack of credit access to farmers
limits the working capital available,
hindering investments in technology
and high yielding inputs.
Wastage due to post harvest/pre sale
transport, processing and storage
contributes to a loss of nearly 2.3%
of the total produce quantity.
3. Inadequate support infrastructure
There are several constraints of land
availability for agriculture due to
competing pressures from urbanization,
constructions and industrialization.
Each region has its own
limitations for impacting
agricultural productivity like soil
erosion, floods etc.
Land under cultivation is stagnant and
yield growth is largely flat across major
categories due to low productivity from
agriculture.
Other factors like non-availability
of electricity, high population
growth, poor road and
communication infrastructure, etc.
4. Specific factors impacting productivity
Page 15
16. 6. Improvement opportunities

Consolidation of creators for economies of scale.

Page 16
17. 7. Some of the key business opportunities in food processing infrastructure
Increase in demand for value added tertiary
processed products especially frozen food will
also drive the need for improved warehousing
and cold storage facilities.
The demand for cold chain infrastructure is set to
increase with modern trade expected to grow at 2025% and the emergence of large Indian and
international players in the food chain.
In spite of being one of the worlds leading
producers of food there is lack of proper
storage and organized cold chain facilities,
which leads to large scale wastages.
Warehousing
facilities
Indian Food Processing Industry – A Synopsis
Managing and providing common infrastructure
for fees, that is required by a group of food
processing small scale industries like common
machineries, technology etc. which otherwise
may not be affordable by individual processor.
Considering this gap, companies , especially
international companies present in Indian
manage these processes in house with
minimal intervention from third parties.
There is currently a large gap in terms of
availability of value added services like
tagging, repacking, promotion packing,
etc.
Value added
services
There is a large opportunity in the sector
as the Indian logistics space is currently
dominated by unorganized players who
provide very basic services with a very low
use of technology.
The use of information technology to
integrate the point of sale systems with
delivery chain to aid inventory management
and forecasting is minimal.
There is a growing need among retailers
and manufacturers to obtain real time
data to ensure proper order planning,
stocking and manufacturing plans.
