General Purposes of Indexing
• To construct representations, of documents in a form that
is suitable to the users to browse .

• To maximize the searching success of the users.

• To minimize the time and effort in finding information.
Use of Indexing
• Facilitate reference to the specific materials.
• Serve as filter to withhold irrelevant materials
• Make the information storage and retrieval
  system useful.
• Disclose related information
• Provide a comprehensive overview of a subject
  fields.
Information Retrieval System Indexes
Information Retrieval

   Selective, systematic recall of
logically stored information.
Purpose of Information Retrieval

   Collect and organize information in
one or more subject areas.
Information Retrieval System

Set of operations, procedures by which
documentary units are indexed the resulting
records are stored and displayed and so can
be retrieved.
6 Distinct Functions

(1) Acquisition of the necessary and appropriate documents.

(2) Preparation and representation of the content of those
   documents.

(3) Coding of the content indicators.
(4) Organized storage of those documents and their indicators
   in separate files.

(5) Development of operational search strategies .

(6) Physical dissemination of the retrieval results.
