Production
 Production is the process of creating a film and it consists of three stages:
1. Development- Treatment, script
2. Packaging- Pitch idea, hire some creative staff
3. Preproduction- Storyboard, final drafts to the script, insurance and logistics
4. Principal photography- Filming
5. Post-production- Editing, special effects, music and loops
Who are some production companies who
produce films?
 Some examples of companies who produce independent
films are: BBC FILMS who created 'Brooklyn', Big Talk
productions who produced 'At worlds end' and Heyday films
who produced 'The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas'.
 Some examples of companies who produce mainstream
films are: 20th century fox, Universal and Walt Disney
Pictures.
Distribution
 Distribution is the process of making a film available for an audience to view.
 Revenues from the film industry come from many different sources including:
1. Theatrical distribution and non theatrical distribution eg, hotels, airlines
2. Videogram distribution eg. DVD
3. Online distribution eg. itunes
4. Streaming eg. iplayer
5. Pay-television networks and delivery services eg. premium cable
6. Non-pay television eg. cable, independent and local channels
7. Ancillary rights eg. sound, publishing and merchandise.
What are the advantages of self
distribution?
When you self distribute a film you don't need
a distributor which doesn't necessarily mean that
you have extra work either as you can hire people
to do publishing for you etc. Another advantage
would be that you would keep your rights at
owning your own film.
What is online distribution?
 Online distribution or otherwise known as
'digital distribution' is the bypassing of physical distribution
and replacing it with distributing online; this usually applies
to downloadable content. The content that is distributed
online is available to be either downloaded or streamed.
Online distribution is getting a lot more popular each year
and is therefore having an impact on the retail industry.

What is a film screening?
A film screening is the displaying of a film; they tend
to show the film to its best advantage.
They usually occur outside of cinema hours.
What are some companies that distribute
independent films?
Some examples of companies that distribute are
20th Century Fox, Lionsgate and Columbia Pictures.
Exhibition
 The actual displaying of a film to the public after it has been
produced and distributed eg. in a cinema
How can independent film’s be exhibited?
 Independent films can be exhibited at film festivals as they
hope to get picked up by some major distributors so that
their film gets a wider release. Independent films can also be
shown at smaller cinemas where an audience is there for
more specialist films and this is a process called platforming.
If a film then proves to be popular it will then be put out for
wider release.
Independent films
 Independent films are any film that has been funded with less than 50%
of the money coming from one of the 'big six' companies. Independent
films are sometimes easy to spot because of their style. They usually have
a much smaller budget than major films.
 The big six: Columbia, 20th century fox, Walt Disney pictures/ touchstone
pictures, Warner bros. Pictures, Paramount pictures and Universal studios.
 They often make the audience think and ask questions
 Not usually shown at cinemas
 Independent companies can fund their projects by raising money from
various projects or they can also secure funding from private investors
however, they usually are funded by art agencies such as the British film
council.
Mainstream films
 Mainstream films: Usually made in Hollywood/ Bollywood,
available for the general public and they're released in public
cinemas.
 Often make you laugh or cry
 Mainstream films make money
Independent vs Mainstream summary
 There are several differences between both independent and
mainstream films. Firstly, a mainstream film is one that is
shown typically in the cinemas ans they are made to make
money and to make a profit whereas an independent film is
not usually shown in cinemas and is made to make a point
and to get the audience asking questions and thinking about
it. Also, an independent film is usually made outside of
Hollywood with a much lower budget in comparison to the
mainstream films made in Hollywood by one of the big six
companies.
