Coronavirus-related disruption has given the South Eastern Regional College time to rethink teaching and learning and how it looks in this space. What needs to change to better prepare students for an as yet unknowable future? Technology has stepped into the breach and harnessing available tools we exploited these to engage learners and support staff. The technical aspects of the response have been the most straightforward: they know who the experts are in their organisations, the resources available, and how to harness the growing internal data to guide decisions. More challenging has been the human dimension of the response. They are experiencing new possibilities to do things differently and adjusting to help students continue to learn and interact. Resilience and adaptability are essential skills to navigate this new norm. Many organisations would have viewed a wholesale shift to online working, teaching and learning as untenable and impossible, yet this is what many did. Every crisis has a narrative and this one is still being written. In this session, Paula looked at the approaches taken and their impact.

In recent months universities have rapidly implemented significant and often unplanned changes to the ways in which education is delivered. In large part, the nature of such changes will be temporary, although the significance of such changes may be longer lasting. But this has also allowed universities to explore opportunities that otherwise may not have been considered. One can foresee that many universities will need to focus more time and energy on their approach to technology for student learning, and as a result their digital leadership. Yet technology on its own is not the solution; it is an enabler. In this session Peter will reflect briefly on his own institution's journey towards technology-enhanced learning and support, one that encompasses a broad array of technological developments, and involved many colleagues and students, the aim of which is the delivery of a high-quality and inclusive student experience for all.

Digital wellbeing to institutional compassion: A co-created journey?

There is no one right way to use technology to underpin the curriculum. The range of possibilities can make it difficult for practitioners to know where to start, but as universities and colleges adapt to the new normal of teaching in hybrid environments support is needed to ‘get it right.’ There will be challenges, but you can overcome these if time and resources are directed at the right things. There are lots of misunderstandings about what it means to use technology to support teaching, learning and assessment. Academic staff need to approach the challenge with an awareness of those misconceptions as well as with a critical and creative mindset. This webinar will showcase examples of how universities and colleges are currently adapting to provide flexible approaches to learning using digital. The focus will be on what lessons we have learned over the last six months and how we can make online learning a transformative experience for learners, rather than a deficit model.

Hidden learning spaces - What learning analytics cannot tell us

In this presentation, we report findings from on-going questionnaire/student-based primary research to shed light on hidden learning spaces and the key non-VLE factors identified, for example attendance. Our paper will be of interest and benefit to other institutions seeking to evaluate and optimise learning analytics to build a more holistic picture of student learning, thereby enhancing student outcomes.

Weston College has developed the S.P.A.C.E. campaign to promote eSafety awareness. The campaign focuses on selecting safe online friends, protecting personal information, acting wisely, controlling privacy settings, and exposing cyberbullying. It is being implemented through a tutorial scheme of work and marketing materials. Foundation learning students received a differentiated assignment involving a social wall tool and video to develop their understanding of safe social media practices. eSafety is also addressed in ICT lessons for students with learning difficulties and disabilities.

A webinar was held on June 15th with over 120 delegates and 5 learners discussing emerging best practices for online learning. Key topics included ensuring lessons are short and include peer collaboration to prevent online fatigue, providing all learners access to learning materials, technology, and spaces, and helping learners engage with online and independent learning since it differs from in-person classes. Special consideration was given to September starters who will not know their tutors or peers and require crucial induction support, as well as addressing challenges with practical work and providing timely feedback to learners.

The Jisc Student Digital Experience Tracker provides a survey and engagement process to understand students' digital experiences. The survey collects both closed questions to benchmark experiences and open questions for local analysis. Participating institutions value the actionable evidence, benchmarking, and community of practice. Over 90 institutions participated in the 2017-18 pilot, and there is interest in the aggregated findings. The tracker aims to involve students in design, communication, interpretation, and response to better inform strategies and investments to improve students' digital experiences.

The emergence of E-learning has shaped the university's new pedagogical, environment to guarantee business continuity in worse pandemics. Assessment is an end process of learning however, measuring it to globally accepted standards is still a nightmare in universities. It is not clear whether the assessment spells out the tasks posed to learners? illustrate an observable demonstration of the learners’ ability? or have a detailed scoring criterion? no wonder stake holders still doubt assessment online. The research examined qualitative literature regarding the innovative strategies for online educational assessment sustainable and scalable. To gather empirical qualitative data on this subject, a systematic review of literature was undertaken. The study responded to one major research question. “What are the experiences of educational practitioners reported in empirical qualitative research studies pertaining innovative strategies for online educational assessment?” We conducted a qualitative review of the scientific literature published between 2010 and 2022 using the PRISMA framework, thematic analysis was employed to generate themes and patterns. Education databases, like ERIC were used for the article search. Search phrases utilized for this systematic review included “Strategies for online assessment” and “Assessment of E-learning.” 16 articles were included in the analysis for this study. findings point to the Asynchronous Online Discussion, E-portfolios, Distance Project based assessment, Online proctored Exams, Online non-proctored exams as sustainable strategies. The study demonstrates a potential solution to online assessment in universities and restores confidence among educational partners and funders.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education

Peter Windle

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction. This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
