As part of the Navitas 2020 Strategic Project on Retention, Learning and Teaching Services has been investigating and evaluating current practice both within our colleges and externally, developing a Retention Driver Tree to identify the activities that make a difference to the student experience.
In a recent webinar, Maria Spies and Suneeti Rekhari unpacked retention strategies and explored deeper into the impact of current retention pilots at Deakin and La Trobe Colleges.
Maria Spies outlined the Retention Driver Tree and the factors contributing to student experience and success. Suneeti Rekhari explained the processes used to plan, implement and evaluate the retention interventions, and the early indicators and outcomes emerging from the Colleges. Through this presentation, they discussed what these initial findings mean for the Retention Driver Tree and the next steps in addressing retention.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Evaluate existing NQs and develop and deliver new Higher and
Advanced Higher courses.
Ensure that learning for sustainability and the school’s vision and
values underpin all four contexts of learning
Be explicit, through LIs and SC, about the skills pupils are developing
through lessons.
Continue to evaluate the BGE ( including primary/secondary transition)
to ensure coherence and progression across the four contexts of
learning.
Continue to explore and expand flexible progression pathways for all in
the SP
Embed STEM and Learning for Sustainability in the BGE and the SP in
line with the recommendations from DSYW and the school’s rationale
for the curriculum.
Continue to consult with all about the design of the curriculum.

Foster a ‘Growth Mindset’ across staff and
pupils.
Develop and evaluate an ASL toolkit.
Provide in house CLPL on differentiation and

Review the current target setting booklets, pupils planners and profiling
through consultation with staff and pupils and ensure a streamlined
and efficient system.
Improve attendance to above 95% for all year groups.
Ensure that robust moderation is embedded in all departments and
faculties.
Monitor, track and celebrate pupils’ wider achievements.

communicated to all and used to generate
