My Website, as some of you may know, recently had a major error. Although I presumed it was
hacked, I was wrong. Instead, there was a database error which caused every article, page, and
comment to be deleted. That’s 46 posts, 3 pages, and 115 comments – 5 months worth of work.
Now, it’s not impossible for this to happen to your site, too. So, how do you stop it from
happening?

Backing Up Your Website
One of the most important things for you to do is back up your website’s files and databases
frequently. Now, I have made the mistake of not backing up my website’s files, but I do back up
my databases. By doing this mistake, if I were to do something that causes something bad to
happen, I wouldn’t have anything to go back to. For example, picture this…
You’re editing some of your website’s codes and accidently delete your index.html file (or
index.php). Unless you have your website backed up, you will lose that file. What if you have
over 1,000 lines of code like some files? You just lost hours, if not days of work!
By backing up your files, you can easily recover those files and save lots of stress.
Databases
Databases, however, store things like comments, posts, etc. It, in general, stores all of the
website’s information. Now, there’s one problem – if something happens to your database, you
could lose all of your content, much like what happened to my website.
Now, you can manually back up databases, much like general backups, but there is also a
solution to Wordpress users. If you download a plug-in called “Wordpress Database Backup”,
you can, after editing the settings, have a backup of your database emailed to you ever night. If it
weren’t for that plug-in, My Website would be almost a week behind.
Importance of Website Backups
So, if you haven’t figured it out already, backing up your website is important so you don’t
LOSE everything. Of course, you should have good security so hackers can’t get in, but you
must also realize that things can happen at the hosts’ end, too. If something crashes, everything
could be deleted, and without backups, everything would be gone forever. Backing everything up
can save hours of frustration, stress, and yelling ( ).
Also, if you’re wondering why no post was out on Sunday, May 23, 2010, there was. The thing
was, the plug-in I talked about only backs up the database during the night time. So, the post that
got released on Sunday got deleted when the database experienced the errors. I tried getting
everything fixed in time, though!
